SHOULD DYER CO-DYERSBURG STOP PLAYING EACH OTHER IN ALL SPORTS

What are your thoughts?Mike Smith, local sports writer for the State Gazette thinks Dyersburg and dyer Co should call a halt to all sports .It is a big money game and a game the fans want to see.As for ending the games, why?Because of some stupid kids?Coaches need to let them know before the games..any unruly behavior..you'll sit for 5 games because that's what I require. There are a lot of rivalries in just as short of driving distance as Dyersburg and Dyer Co..Union City and Obion Central play every year.Guess what ..neither of them are in the same district. Both are in the same county just a few miles apart.Union City is a Single A school playing a bigger school..In East Tenn you have Alcoa and Maryville playing every year.A lot bigger game than Dyersburg -Dyer Co if people know football. Two dynasties. Both schools even closer than Dyersburg and Dyer Co.The Maryville Bank is on one side of the street and the Alcao Drug store is across the street.Again..neither team is in the same district as Maryville is a larger school..Same for South Pittsburg and Marion Co.Two schools in the same county.South Pittsburg is a Single A school.A few years ago, both won a state championship the same year. The only loss South Pittsburg had was to Marion Co..This just shows that people that act civilized and the right coaches should be able to make this game happen. If those schools can do it and again..Dyer Co-Dyersburg is no where close to Alcoa and Maryvile in closeness of the schools or on a talent level.Sounds like you're maybe saying Dyersburg is thinking Dyer Co has passed them by as the premier program whether it be from getting kids from all over. And I had a son that went to dyer Co for 10 years. He hung out with Dyersburg kids.Played travel baseball with some of them but was mostly Dyer Co kids.On weekends I can promise you Dyer Co and Dyersburg kids hang out together.I can promise that both schools have girlfriends and or boyfriends from each school.I can promise you that some Dyer Co parents are best friends with Dyersburg parents.Another thing..this could happen at any game.Could happen at Covington-Brighton as I'm sure their kids know each other.Could happen with Humboldt-Milan..Another thing that probably is playing into a lot of them is Dyer Co is getting a stigma that they are recruiting ..I don't personally think that as far as maybe the coaches are doing it but do believe Dyer Co is taking advantage of what the TSSAA allows them to do.They have open gym and by letting players come from all nearby areas, have a lot of players and parents wanting these players to come to Dyer Co.Dyer Co has AAU ball and same thing here.a lot of thses kids get to playing with Dyer Co kids, see the school, the crowds they have and want to come to Dyer Co.I think a lot of vibes are out there that Dyer Co is or has become the BEAST of the area.Kids from Ripley,Lake Co.,Halls,Gibson Co..kids that didn't move but live in those counties are playing for Dyer Co and a lot of ill or bad feelings about Dyer Co. .The TSSAA is responsible for a lot of this.Maybe a lot of Dyersburg fans or parents have realized that Dyer Co has passed them by.But again..should these teams not play sports against each other at all?Should they end the series?

Being from Halls, I know that the Harris kid who pitched the State Championship game is from Halls. I know that two of the players including the good receiver on the football team have parents from Halls, but I think a lot of people are simply moving to the area and it could be misinterpreted as "recruiting". Maybe some people in Dyersburg can see the handwriting on the wall when it comes to athletics and they don't want to be embarrased by what used to be the little school down the road. I think it would be a big mistake to cancel the series. A lot of people really enjoy the series and a lot of money has got to be going into both athletic departments because of the series!

Union City and Obion Central had to cool it down a few years a while back in basketball....Moved out of the same district/classification and didn't play each other for a while....When they got moved back in the same classification and back in the same district and had to play, they had one of the biggest crowds ever to see a basketball game at UTM...I think the only game with a bigger attendance was when the Lady Vols came over and played the Lady Skyhawks....

I've said for a couple of years now that there is no reason football-wise that OC and UC should be playing each other....The only reason it's played now is for the gate receipts....

Even though the series is lopsided in Union City's favor (38-9-0), it has become more of a rivalry the last 10 years (5-5-0) which means there have been some really big crowds which means they make more money which means they will continue to play...

I can't see Dyersburg and Dyer County not playing each other...Maybe they need more law enforcement at the games...

The Administrators from the school should insure that the schools continue to play and take the necessary steps to insure that the athletes conduct themselves appropriately. These atmospheres are where children become men and make great citizens for their respective communities. Clint Abbott- I was principal at Alcoa High School for 22 years and we always looked forward to playing Maryville High School, even though they beat us more than we beat them. From 1970 until 1985, we lost a lot of very close games and our athletes became better citizens for the opportunity to compete with the Rebels.

It's funny how when Dyersburg was the big kid on the block and Dyer County was the red-headed step child that none of this was never brought up. Just for the record, in that time frame, a young man on the DC football team that beat Dyersburg three years ago was threatened to be shot by a bunch of thugs from DHS. Thugs that are now probably paying their debt to society as we speak. He had to be escorted by law enforcment the entire night, his family was issued an officer of the law and it is just now... "well maybe they should quit playing each other." How conveinient. Mr. Smith knows there is only one thing for certain, the beat downs will be coming for years to come IN EVERY SPORT and, that my friends is the real reason, plain and simple. Besides, with a $30,000 gate, you could hire and entire SWAT team to patrol the game. Dyersburg sure didn't wait for us to catch up to the game, I don't think we should have to either.

I agree with you.We at Lake Co have played Alcoa a few times in the palyoffs and State Championships.A quality program that has gotten better through the years..That's what I was trying to say.Why can't Dyersburg and Dyer Co play. The biggest game in the state is Alcoa and Maryville so I see no reason why.I also see Alcoa and Maryville is going at it again this Friday night.Sure wish it were closer from here.I have to give the edge to Alcoa again this year and make it 2 in a row.!

Again..thats just a few thug kids. All of them aren't like that.It starts with the parents and then the coaches. What is to be expected of them.No reason in the world both teams can't play a hard fought clean game.Like I said ..Alcoa and Maryville do it every year. That is THE GAME.Dyersburg and Dyer Co is no comparison. And those two teams are playing this Friday night. And wouldn't be surprised to see 10,000 people in the stands.!
