Oliver Springs @ Wartburg

Up 6 Touchdowns with four minutes left in the game a fight breaks out. The blame is on Wartburg's coaches. You've ran the score up all year, and now you're going to have to play a game next week against a very good team, and you're prolly gonna have a couple KEY starters on the bench because you were too stubborn to take out your starters. The kid from OZ did what every other 18 year old kid wants to do when they're losing big and you look across and it's still the starters. Maybe the Wartburg coaches will take a little lesson in sportsmanship.

The coaches are not to blame, (either side). Wartburg wanted to win. Oliver Springs can score quickly as shown when they played Sunbright. They had starters out and Oliver Springs scored. The kid came back out to start things again and his players stopped him. What he did is not what other players would do. Both teams showed class. Bad ending. Wartburg showed sportsmanship. Good luck Bulldogs.

I'm pretty sure #16 and #11 are starters... but I may be sadly mistaken?

and im pretty sure #16 and #11 was on the sidelines with there helmets off watching what took place on the field lol until #30 came over to the sideline looking for trouble then did they put there helmets on to protect themselves but they never left the sidelines 2/3 rds of the players wartburg had in the game was j/v and the rest was 2 second teamers lol but i know OS still had there starters in but its ok lol wtg Dawgs

The school needs to suspend the kid, bar the kid and his dad from attending any further after school activities for the remainder of this year and next year. If nothing is done, this type of behavior will only continue. There will be some who will try to blame the coaches for having no control of a player, the coaches are not on the field, they can't stop someone from displaying poor judgement or behaving poorly at any given time on the field.

Besides that, if one of my kids acted out on the playing field, it wasn't one of his coaches he had to worry about. They knew they would have me to deal with.

Congrats to Wartburg and good luck next week!

I totally agree with Catback on this one. I feel sorry for the coach's at Oliver Springs this one player has made OS look bad. I say Dr. McGriff knows about this and im pretty sure she will be at the school monday, I say the school will take action

You give McGriff and the school too much credit. McGriff will do nothing, the school will do nothing. There is little the school can do as the season is over.

It was the actions of one family, who was also involved in an incident at Sunbright where the police got involved, and the police got involved in Wartburg, who has taught their child that anger and fighting is the way to solve issues, that has caused this problem for the school and the sports program. There needs to be actions against the family such as denial of entry to all sports events at Roane county schools or events attended by Roane county schools for the next three years. But will McGriff or the school do that? I doubt it.

I have seen accusations of running up the score. What is a team to do when they have the ball? Intentional fumble,? Throw a pass at a defender? No. They simply move the ball. If a player finds a hole they run through the hole, they still play hard, they do what the game involves. They move the ball. Running up the score is when you have 4th and 2 on the 3 yard line and run for a touchdown rather than a field goal. Wartburg did none of that.

So now Oliver Springs will have a reputation that is not at all indicative of the rest of the school all because of one family. That is indeed a shame.

I support Oliver Springs but I also support the kids that play for all schools. I will never boo the players at any school as it is not fair to the kids. I will not cheer for a good play on the other team but I will acknowledge the efforts of the student making the play.

I wish OS could have won again. They did not. So be it. It will not change my life or affect my stock portfolio. I wish Wartburg well and hope they get into the title game and actually win. Anytime a local school can bring home a trophy it is a good day.

Good points you make here raygun. The more I think about it; it REALLY saddened me to see the OS players have to walk off the field single file like convicts escorted by state troopers when 98% of them had done NOTHING wrong! Sure I'm an old Wartburg alum and former player, but this still just really affected me. I sincerely hope that #30 and his father are dealt with in some way. I also want to congratulate OS on a good season and to advise them to keep their heads up and know that I, like most other folks on CoachT, know that this incident wasn't indictative of a team, coaching staff, or a community.

Sorry guys i had to miss the game and just got back in town. Family sickness so i had to tend to that.

I got text last night giving me updates and stuff and when i got the call telling me of the incident I was devastated to hear what took place. To the wartburg fans, players and coaches I want to first say congratulations on the win and moving on. Now i will talk about the incident. Catback and scw86 stated it well. There has to be something that happens to this kid. I will in no way bash him cause after all he is a 17 or 18 yr old kid, and kids tend to lose their cool sometimes, and with it being his last football game he will ever play I can see how he lost it. But in NO WAY should that excuse him from school punishment. I expect the coaches, and staff administration at Oliver Springs High School to do a good job in determining what his punishment shall be.

On top of this my first thought was will OS face probations or sanctions place upon by the TSSAA for an incident like this? I sure hope what few do will not affect others in the coming years. To the OS football team and coaches, the community including I are proud of what ya'll done this year and last. 2 straight winning seasons! Oh and to the underclassmen, bust it this off season to get bigger, faster, and stronger cause as said before WE WILL BE BACK and better next year and I sure am excited to watch the Purple and Gold make a deep run next year!

Again congratulations to Wartburg and good luck next week! I think I shall be out there watching the Bullldogs vs Boyd :thumb:

Good post. You seem a lot like Catback- a pure class act. Good luck to OS in the future.

Bitterfan you tell me what you are supposed 2 do.. Turn the ball over on purpose? It is still up to the other team to make a stop.. Just because your getting beat doesn't mean the game is over. Both teams still play hard out there. And you said that 16 and 11 was in the game. No they wasn't think about the interception Wartburg threw right before all of this happened.. That wasn't 11 that threw that pass and 16 wasn't one of the one he was throwing to or he wasn't any reciever out there. So know what your talking about before u start trashing Wartburg coaches on here. There is NO EXCUSE for how 30 for OZ reacted to the game. Even if there is trash talk going on. Every team does it and you can't go fight every player that says something to you. Oh and you should look at some of the OZ/Wartburg scores from the last few years.. And I haven't seen Wartburg players starting fights over it out there

excuse me, but #30 had every single right to do something, and his father because the coach kept grabbing him and pushing him back on the field from getting thrown out of bounds and #30 was tired of it. and #5 from Wartburg made a vulgar comment about #30's sister so its not because they were loosing or because it was their last game, he was just tired of being pushed around by someone who had no right to do that and because of Wartburg's team smarting off. Wartburg's coach is now having charges pressed against him, and he deserves it, cause he has no right doing what he did to #30. Yes it might have made OS look bad, but if you people knew the whole story you could understand why he did what he did, so stop judging OS for "rumors", when u know the story...then you can make comments.

I totally disagree here. I don't know about all the "sister" stuff and sure, I don't guess I know the "whole story" but there is NEVER an acceptable time for a parent to get involved like the guy did. Charges being pressed? PLEASE! If the coach kept the kid from hurting himself or hurting someone else, he did the right thing. "Smarting off" as you say, is an unfortunate thing, but it's been happening in high school football for years, I remember it well when I played. The bigger person ignores it and goes on. Again, I HATE what happened the other night, but I have a feeling if OS had had a huge lead,#30 wouldn't have been so "high spirited" and ready to fight.
