TSSAA visits Signal Mtn

I have enjoyed reading CoachT for years, but have only just joined and have never posted. This topic, however, hits close to home - literally. I am flummoxed that this has not happened sooner. I have heard from friends with children at the school that there are a number of football players each year of the program thus far that DO NOT live on the mountain, use the NCLB rulings to attend SMMHS only to play football, and then return to their zoned schools for the rest of the year. While the investigators are here, perhaps they should ask about this practice as well. In addition, I am appalled at the attitude and behavior of the coach. His lack of ethical player management, inability (or refusal) to be a life coach for his players and his outright prevarications in past episodes are an embarrassment to my community.

People need to realize that there is no true anonymity on a social network site and when slanderous statements are made, that person can be made liable.

In response to the poster, there have not been any NCLB kids who have played football at SM and then went back to the home school. As a matter of fact, I am not sure there has been any of these students that have even played that are in this category, but if they did and they are the MVP of the team, it’s their legal right to do so.

It’s interesting that two TSSAA official show up unannounced at SM school after the 7th game of the year questioning a kid’s eligibility that they approved three weeks prior to the season. I am sure they are doing their due diligence based on some disgruntled SM opponent.

With that said, there was nothing that was provided to the TSSAA that was not 100% accurate and true in his application for eligibility. The child had a bonifide change of address and had met the TSSAA required academic standards to be eligible to participate. The child in question was also granted a hardship by the Hamilton County schools to attend SM based on some very specific circumstances involving the child.

Like many other kids within the county who have received these types of hardships over the years…once the eligibility is approved it is no longer questioned. If Signal Mountain is penalized by the TSSAA based on the Hamilton Counties hardship approval, that’s a whole can of worms that will involve many schools and various athletic programs across the entire county. If the county’s administration grants a kid a hardship to attend another school within the county based on very specific circumstances, that child should be able to participate in that schools programs. To not allow a child to do so would be discriminatory.

Treating this child different and accusing some wrongdoing on the part of the school and football without merit is dead wrong.

Rebel who seem knowledgeable about TSSAA rules. Does students from any school on academic probation allowed to go to SM. Just asking because they got a running back from ER last year and LV also in the past.

Is SM the place to go for athletes with poor test scores and acadameic standards?? this should be interesting to follow in the coming weeks :popcorneater:

Beginning what was a very good statement about this situation with a threat was a bad choice and detracted from the point you were tring to make.

That boy moved to SM and lived on the mountain with his family and had nothing to do with academic probation. He played basketball at SM before he ever played football. No one questioned that. I guess that was because they did not win all of their games.

Signal Mountain's new program named "no good football player left behind" seems to have a few

wrinkles that need to be ironed out. School officials are meeting with the TSSAA in hopes of

getting on track. The fans of Signal Mountain, who love the new mandate, are standing behind

the Head Coach 100%.

A 4.3 40, is a terrible thing to waste.

Swingjuice that's funny I don"t care who you are.

Anon Troll is a good guy and a true fan of his community school. He would be the 1st to say if he had facts one way or another. I would say tbe reason he has not posted it would not matter what he said he would get blasted or he is drunk and passed out. Sorry Troll

    • You didn't spell Greeneville and Elizabethton correctly in your sentence.  4A has the best teams in Upper East TN.  Carter County All-Stars and Greene County All-Stars is the Superbowl now.
    • Yeah, but if he goes to Science Hill they are guaranteed at least a win over Kingsport and that's basically the NET Superbowl
    • I expect Sevier County might be pretty good, perhaps Mo West as well.     But I don't see either of them getting out of round 2.          The rest of the region gets smoked in round 1.            Except for those once-in-a-blue-moon anomaly years the NET big schools are pretty much the same every season.
    • Wanted to see if all of you would lift up Kyle James family in prayer. Kyle was one of the best wrestlers to ever come out of Soddy Daisy and as some of you know he lost his house a few weeks ago and now his family and friends mourns his passing. Not sure if any of you were around in early 2000’s when Kyle was wrestling at Soddy, but he was a 3 time state champ and a Fargo AA along with going to Colorado to train to make the Olympic team. That goal was never reached due to medical issues, but he was an amazing wrestler and his family is as good as gold. If you were around at that time and have any pictures of Kyle, please go onto Alexy Winesburgh FB page and post. Thanks, Doug Benton
    • My opinion the 8 teams will be-  Greenback, Wartburg, Gordonsville, Jo Byrns, Eagleville, Bruceton, Dresden, and South Fulton. Gordonsviile is probably the favorite but I wont say it will be an easy road. With the right draw any of the 8 could win it.
