Alrighty so were midway through the year, and I thought we could all throw our difference of opinions on who are the top wrestlers in the state right now. I'll throw out my top 5 first. Disclaimer: if you don't agree with me, instead of throwing a fit cause I didn't put your favorite one up there MAN UP and tell us yours.....

5. Mark Marchetti (Father Ryan, Sr.)- Three time state medalist and twice runner up. Mark has big wins this season beating 3 of the top 6 ranked kids in his weight class, 2 by pin. Winning the Father Ryan tournament, and the SE Prep Slam via tech fall in the finals.

4. Ethan West (Cleveland, Jr)- A former GA state champ it's good to have him back in TN. Noteable wins this year include beating beating a former state medalist and top ranked D2 wrestler by 6 to take the GP West.

3. Nick Gray (Christian Brothers, 12)- Gray is a former Fargo placer and numerous time team TN member and state placer. Big wins this year include a win in the semis of the GP West over the top ranked D1 wrestler in his weight and going 4-0 at the GBD.

2. Elijah Oliver (Christian Brothers, So)- A former state champ, Elijah has been on what can be called nothing short of a mission this year. Pinning the number 1 ranked Debian from Cleveland in the first period in the finals of the GP West tourney, he also went 3-0 at the GBD.

1. Kaleb Baker (Christian Brothers, Sr)- Former state champ, Fargo medalist, and numerous time team TN member, Kaleb is the real deal. Kaleb took the GP West, went 5-0 and the GBD and was named OW and beat the OW from the other pool as well. Kaleb signed to wrestle at Arizona State next year, a D1 powerhouse.

I believe you have to make a strong argument for Brunner and Popp for at least honorable mention.

Brunner- places in powerade ( Ghouse will substantiate that this a top 4/5 national tournament.

Wins prep slam. Only blemish is defeat from freshman phenom Diaz from Georgia at the McCallie.

Popp- same logic as above.

Ghouse- pls weigh in.

Popp , in what had to be a awesome challedge match, prob nobody outside the Baylor wrestling room ever saw, won a match that I bet is tougher than anybody he faces at state in finals against a fellow teamate. That ads even more cred to him as well....

    • I agree with the Farragut and Bradley claim. Those will both be wins. Bearden like you say is depending on when you get them in comparison to when the wheels fall off.  As far as West goes I’m 50-50. They have been able to reload so far so until they show me they haven’t I can’t count them out.
    • during the 2nd round of the playoffs last year against Milan, Gray partially tore his meniscus. He had a minor repair around Thanksgiving. Recovery time was minimal and he has been full force for baseball this season.
    • What do ya’ll think the O/U will be? I would set the line at 2.5
    • Playing high school sports is a privilege not a right.  The college did not have to rescind the scholarship.  Scholarship offers are pulled all the time for a number of reasons. That was 100% their choice.  A coach can keep, cut, or dismiss any player that they want to without reason anytime they want.  Is that the right way to run a program?? I don't think that it is, but these are the facts of the matter. This case has absolutely 0% chance of going in the plaintiff's favor. Futhermore, I'd imagine that these administrators and the coach are a part of some teaching or coaching organization that will cover at least 1 million dollars each in legal fees. Obviously the kid and her family feel like there were "damages" thus the lawsuit.  Unfortunately, the law is not on their side in this case.
    • Maryville will recapture the loses from last year against West, Bradley and Farragut. The Bearden game will be the tough one but I look for the wheels to come off that ride somewhere down the road because of all the crap that goes on there. I know to many parents there and some of the things I've been told and some of the post a few of them have made on facebook. They all can't be liars.
