I have seen a few games and yes the refs have tightened it up a bit but not to an extreme. Think the games I have seen have been called well and they are cutting out physical play and the game is IMO much cleaner and better to watch. Players will adjust. AAU is good don't get me wrong but it is just glorified pick games.

In the last 5 years the overall quality of officiating has IMHO dropped significantly. A lot of the newer officials do not appear to be knowledgeable about basketball, and many appear to have a huge chip on their shoulders. I do think that cleaning up some things is in order, however it appears that the way they are trying to do that is to eliminate the ability to play defense. An offensive player can push, lower their shoulder etc and nothing. A defensive player puts a hand up, and foul. to make a clean game the officials need to give the guy with position the benefit of the doubt.

 

As for AAU, in many cases you are right some AAU is nothing but pickup ball. But there are some very good AAU coaches and programs. Coaches that teach teamwork, and defense, and improve the level of play so that the players go back and help their programs. If you have watched HS ball over the last 30 years you have seen the overall level of skill has improved greatly, and the extra play generated by AAU has IMHO been largely responsible for it.

OR beats Eight Mile Rock High School from the Bahamas 62-53. Good job, Cats. Will play Charlotte Christian tomorrow. Merrian leads the way with 18. Henderson with 16, and Kevin Steen chips in 14. Good balanced scoring attack.

Today (and tomorrow) Catholic High School will be hosting the 14th annual Fighting Irish Freshman Shoot-Out Classic. The game times are as followed:

10 am Karns vs. William Blount

11:30 am Powell vs Heritage

1:00 pm Bearden vs. Clinton

2:30 pm West vs. Dobbyns-Bennett

Tomorrow will be semi-finals and consolation play starting at 9 am and playing all day.

Halls is now 6-2, after going undefeated at the Farragut Thanksgiving Tournament. Halls beat Farragut Friday, 53-45 and Science Hill Saturday, 58-50. Now the fun begins. Karns Tues, and OR Friday.

Those are some real good wins, especially Science Hill. I don't think 3-AAA is as down (besides OR) like CarolinaCrazy said. OR, Halls, Powell, and Karns all seem to be quality teams again this year. I honestly thought Halls would be down this year. Doesn't seem to be the case.
