Pretty tough schedule so far for CPA. They have beat 7 teams.

Those teams combined record counting CPA is 48-16, not counting CPA is 48-9.Three of them has only 1 loss - to CPA.

Tough weekend coming up in Memphis.

sports nerd they should not have a problem with CBHS now Mitchell might be another story but by them winning handly last year I don't see how they don't leave here 2-0 Edited by con901

Just goes to show statistics like these don't tell the whole story and really not that applicable when the attempt is made to compare apples with oranges.  In HS basketball, superior talent will win 99% of the games especially when in today's game most everyone plays "AAU" style of basketball.  Not many have a specific system to utilize basketball skills or the fact there is no shot clock.

Superior talent wins in all sports. Only when talent is pretty close to even does coaching really come in to play. Part of the reason that "AAU" style basketball has become so popular, is that pressing and trapping, and playing up tempo can usually generate points easier even if the players are less skilled, which is an issue in many cases.

As for not having a system, well I disagree. IMHO more coaches do what others do (they are specifically system coaches) rather than look at their own talent and adjust their game plans to match up to their talent. The other side is that scoring puts butts in seats, it also gets your kids looked at. Not many people are willing to come watch a 40-36 HS boys game these days. Even if you could win that way (and I am not sure you can anymore), your kids, your parents, and everyone else wouldn't be very supportive.

Brentwood did a great job of slowing the game down and holding the ball.  They made every possession count and held the ball longer than a minute in some cases. They have had the best gameplan to beat CPA so far.  Other teams have played a similar up tempo style to CPA as TCB suggested and CPA has pulled away in the 2nd half when they up the defensive pressure while bombarding the basket on offense. It literally rains 3 balls and dunks at times from CPA.

Also CPA has great half court offensive sets when forced to run them. They have multiple 3 point shooters that spread the defense. They also have a great penetrator in Bonds. Blackwell can do it all....post up, drive, rebound, clean up the boards with put backs or shoot from the outside. He's a complete player.  CPA is a very hard team to defend.

They also practice harder than any high school team I've ever seen. There are a lot of talented basketball players at CPA that choose not to play varsity in part because practice intensity and frequency is so physically demanding. They hold two a day practices at times, they have six am practices, go to summer camps as a team, etc.

Coach Drew expects a lot from his players and works them hard to get better.  Not all are willing to work that hard, but the ones who do get better and perform well.  Some people try to suggest that Coach Drew is not a great coach which is far from the truth.  He's a great coach, great developer of talent, and a great leader/mentor for kids.

I've been very impressed this early part of the season with how well last year's reserves have performed in key roles as starters and first guys off the bench.   It's a testimony to their hard work and development. The CPA style works but you have to have shooters that can drain shots and ball handlers and defenders to execute it.  CPA has developed a very deep bench behind their three stars.  When last years 11th and 12th players are starting and sometimes leading all scorers it's a testimony to hard work and great coaching.  I have much respect for those kids and their coach.
