Yea, its hard to get em all in without a lifting period...But I think there is a period some could lift, but dont...THATS the problem!

I think there were some issues worked out last night...The ones that want to workout & be ready to play FB, have every chance to do so...The others that dont want to work, can watch the others play I reckon

Thats usually how it works out on its own anyway. Occasionaly you will have the freak athlete that could be good enough to play without the work but most times hard work beats out talent.

I cant believe yall dont get a weightlifting class. We have a strength and conditioning class in the spring semester. Only catch is that it is open to everyone and were only allowed 1 class of it per day and you can only put up to  30 students in a class. so we have 30 kids in the class and 20 or so will be football players. The rest have to stay after school to lift. We have around 30 -35 lifting right now between the class and after school.

Some larger publics and most of the privates have it figured out where every athlete gets a class to workout every day. Those schools are the ones lifting gold balls in multiple sports

None of our coaches are in a position that they could oversee the strength training. If you had 30 teens going in there by themselves, you would be in for a disaster. We need to get this mess straightened out. Kids will work if you are there with um, but too many don't show up if you do it after school. Its a public school thing.

Yep, it took a lot of jumping up and down and parents complaining to get the 1 class we have in the spring. and were not gauranteed to have it every year. Before that class we tried before school , after school and both and you just cant get the participation you need like that

Sorta like the Marines. I'm sure Mike will get it straightened out, he knows what it takes to build a football team. You need at least 30 hard working kids.

True but it is a lot to ask some kids not the most structured and driven  to stay after school year around. You will always have a better weight program when you have a weightlifting class during school. 2005 2006 2007 proves that we had weightlifting 4th period and made 3 straight final fours. That just dosen't seem to be the emphasis right now at HHS. Your most dedicated and motivated kids with good parents that push them will do whatever is asked of them by the coaches. But lets face the facts public schools sucess depends much more on how much you can get out of the very marginally motivated kids who come from bad home situations, not your most outstanding. It takes too many kids to have a good program. There are just not that many highly motivated kids in small single A high schools. But all private schools  have weightlifting all day and even many public schools also.

I want to think you and I have butted heads in the past...But no matter,  this post is dead on!

As far as the emphasis at HHS goes, weightlifting and motivating the average may not be on the minds of the "powers that be"...But its sure on the minds of the coaches...and can be seen by the long hours they have put in...They understand (as do we) how great the need is for all these kids to be hitting the weights HARD!

I understand we had a very good showing at at the weight room yesterday....If these young men can look at each other and see the possibilities ahead and work towards a common goal, my oh my what a team we would have!!!!

This sorta goes back to the public ,private thing, we need every single kid learning how to do hard things, tons of these kids do absolutely nothing. Strength training is tough, it teaches physical and mental toughness. It could also give kids a sense of pride. Learning how to work hard is a big thing. The one's who learn will be able to be productive citizens in life. They also need to quit passing all kids just because they show up. You need to earn grades and also earn to right to wear a uniform. School and sports should be teaching tools to make kids achievers in life.

I also had issues with some of the things this feller said in the past, but I'm liking what he's saying now. Whoever it is knows quite a bit about Hampton . People just need to talk to the powers that be. If other schools can achieve this,so could we.

Its expected from young men to think about these things, but more often than not, their minds are on other things.  They don't look real far ahead.  Now personally, I dreamed about the gold ball every night but only 1 or 2 shared my vision.  The leadership is there.  They just have to continually drive the point home and even then, not everyone will have the vision.

    • RR, you might remember. Didn’t someone hide the kicking shoe that game? It seems I remember we had missed a kick the week before, and we needed all the points we could get. We thought we had a better chance going for two, so $?&@$ hid the shoe after the first miss that game. No one on our sideline looked for it very hard.
    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
