Sommers
Region 3A-AA is Alcoa..... Football Powerhouse is finding the greatest of all sports... Alcoa Tornadoes earn first state tournament berth By Will Estep | (sports@thedailytimes.com) Most of the Alcoa athletic programs have earned a spot in a state tournament over the years. The Tornadoes wrestling program hasn’t been one of them, until now. Monday afternoon at Alcoa High School, the Tornadoes clinched a spot in the Class A-AA state tournament by winning the Region 3A-AA wrestling duals. Four region teams were at Alcoa on Monday along with two other squads that were there to just get extra mat time. The state tournament was clinched when Alcoa knocked off Greenback 55-24 in each squads second match. “This is pretty big for our program,†Alcoa coach Brian Gossett told The Daily Times. “It was a lot of hard work by a lot of different people.†Gossett is in his sixth year as the Tornadoes coach and he had them on the verge of a state tournament berth the previous three seasons. All three years, Alcoa finished second in the region tournament. The Tornadoes got over the hump on Monday. “I can only take a small portion of the credit,†Gossett said. “I’m just the one with the name on the door. For me it’s very humbling that I was able to take it and help them get to where they want to be.†After the first six weight classes in the all-important match against Greenback, Alcoa trailed 24-12 on the scoreboard. The Tornadoes then won the final eight individual matches to capture the final 55-24 margin. Iyron Edwards hasn’t wrestled in as many meaningful matches this season as some of his teammates, but he came up big Monday with an undefeated day in all five of his matches. He got Alcoa off to a 6-0 start with a first round pin victory in the 160-pound class against Greenback. “His win against Greenback was huge,†Gossett said of Edwards. “He got a pin and got us off to a good start.†Donavon Folkner (182-pounds) and Jacob Martin (285) each had pin wins for Greenback against Alcoa, but the Tornadoes got late pin victories from Austyn Renshaw (138) and Karim Shereef (152) to close out Greenback. “We have been talking about it a lot,†Gossett said of earning a state berth. “I think they were just excited, and a lot of relief. They set this goal from the beginning.†Before Alcoa took on Greenback, Union County got to experience Alcoa first and the Tornadoes got things rolling with a 75-6 win. Kris Dockery (195) and Nicholas Kali (220) each picked up quick pin victories over their opponents against the Patriots. Sean Elder (132) and Renshaw also gained pin wins for Alcoa. Livingston Academy fell to Alcoa 66-18 and Kingston also came up short against the Tornadoes in a 72-3 defeat. South-Doyle isn’t in the same region with Alcoa, but wrestled anyway and came up short to the Tornadoes 70-12. While Greenback did fall to Alcoa, the Cherokees picked up a 36-16 win over Kingston and a 48-16 victory over South-Doyle on Monday. The loss to Alcoa eliminated Greenback from earning a state bid. Shon Wompler (195) picked up a pin victory for Greenback against Kingston. Caleb Arp also pinned his opponent in the 138-pound weight class. Alcoa’s first round match in the state tournament will be on Friday, Jan. 31 in Franklin.
