Stone Memorial wrestling opens regular season schedule...

http://m.crossville-chronicle.com/sports/local_sports/stone-memorial-wrestling-opens-regular-season-schedule/article_76907a1e-9214-11e5-9f64-ab9bbe7ad28b.html?mode=jqm

The Panther wrestling teams ended their pre-season this weekend at Bearden High School by winning more matches than they lost. SMHS had 33 kids compete which was about 10-12 more than any of the other 15 teams.

“Any time you win more than you lose at an event like this, especially with as many rookies as we have, it looks good for the future of the season. This events allows our kids to get two or three quality matches to gauge their progress whether they are a beginner or veteran,†said SMHS coach Brian Parker.

In the girl’s division, Kyah St. Marie and Katie Scoville went undefeated at 3-0. Laura Napier won two matches while rookie Kim Smith went 1-1.   Cassie Tinkle and Bella Del Rossi are still working for their first wins.

“Kyah has beaten two state finalists this week that beat her last year. Not bad for the first week of a new season. Katie and Laura performed as expected. I am excited to see what our new girls can do as the season progresses,†Parker said.

In the experienced boy’s division, Anthony Alegria, Ronnie Wyllins, and Justin Johnson were undefeated at 3-0 with Anthony getting all pins. Dylan Kemmer, Jordan Bowles, John McDonald, Marco Hernandez and Cody Wyllins each had two wins on the day. Xavier Finley, Masion Connock, Chandler Brickle and Christian Gabbard had a win each.

“Most of these guys performed as expected at this level. It is the first time I’ve really been able to see the Wyllins boys compete. They are rough around the edges but they definitely have some talent that will help us throughout the year.†coach Parker said.

â€œMost of our losses were close against quality kids. I have already talked to Xavier, Masion and Chandler about what they can do to win those matches.  Masion is a rookie that I bumped to the tougher division because he can handle it. I was very happy with our effort from these guys today.â€

In the inexperienced boy’s division, Eddie Ford and Elmer Estrada were undefeated at 3-0 with Eddie getting all pins. Lance Hedgecoth, Paxton Elmore and Jonah Richards each got two wins. Chris Heller and Jacob Sweeten got one pin each. Thomas Kerver, Jake Finley, Cody Jordan, Jody Phipps, Chase Hill and Matthew Clanton were not able to get a win but will in the near future.

“I was impressed with Eddie and Elmer today. They came ready to wrestle.   Eddie wrestled one year when he was little but has only practiced three days since then. Chris and Jacob had rough beginnings to the day but capped it off with big pins in their last matches. One of the best things that I get to see as a coach is when a kid gets his first win as a wrestler; you can’t slap the grin off their face and it reminds me of why I do this job,†said Parker.

“Most of the other rookies were close to a win but just didn’t get it today, it will come. Jordan accidentally got placed in the experienced group and had a rough day but I think he will bounce back and be better for it.â€

The Panthers are looking forward to a great season for the wrestling team with the season opener set today at Hixson High in Chattanooga. Start time is 5 p.m. CST.

@ingableshadow I don't know who is going to win NCAA, but as I have said time and time again, dual meet scores will rarely be an accurate indicator of the tournament champion - look at Ohio State last year. By Christmas, everyone had just about written them off.

Wow put down the cheap whiskey Hawkeye brother !!! All I'm saying is that PSU lost 2 matches , both of which your Hawkeye wrestlers would have lost also. In fact those two weights (141/165) would very likely be bonus point victory for PSU in an Iowa/PSU duel. I'd favor Iowa at 133 and 285 , with 125 a toss up. Other than that I'm thinking PSU takes the rest with some bonus sprinkled in.

Anything can happen in wrestling, but the smart money would be on PSU in a dual or in the tournament. Your obviously a Homer with lots of Penn State hate. Can't be easy after all those years of winning to be playing second fiddle to a team from the east. Now that most of the PA studs are staying home its not so easy is it? I've noticed Iowa fans are turning the sorrow of not getting Mark Hall into hope and enthusiasm over Spencer Lee. It's going to be very satisfying when he commits to PSU next year. Nail in the coffin :)

Iowa gave up all 9 points to the only Div I opponent they faced and then blasted 3 lower division schools. It's one thing to face weak Div I teams early on and quite another to go several levels down in competition. It really is a disgrace, imagine if a football powerhouse like Alabama started playing a community college every year in football, they would be ridiculed beyond belief; and what's comical is how some Iowa fans try to defend it and say their doing these teams a favor, lol, as if Iowa is so great getting a complete and utter beat down from them is an honor, LMAO.

I heard some conversation about this, but here is some info for this new season as reported by the tullahoma news, and their local high school, Halls, Arlington, and Summit...

This article is from earlier this year, and a reminder to avoid huge disappointments and internalizing the rule book, proper weight strategy and knowing the possible repercussions in voluntary dual FF's...

Wildcats state dual run ends with loss

By ZACH BIRDSONG

Sports Editor

With a pair of heartbreaking losses and a win riddled with controversy, Tullahoma endured its fair share of drama during its TSSAA State Dual Championship run last weekend in Franklin.

After leading Arlington 36-9, the Wildcats fell in a gut-wrenching loss. The Tigers reeled off six-straight victories to notch the 39-36 come-from-behind win and send Tullahoma to the consolation bracket.

With their backs against the wall in the double-elimination tournament, the Wildcats responded with a 33-30 win over Summit on Saturday morning. Tullahoma built a nine-point lead with one match remaining. After checking with officials, THS Head Coach Al Morris elected to forfeit the final bout, (six points), rather than risk an injury.

Following that contest, the Summit squad left the mat and the Wildcats began prepping for their next match against Knox Halls. As THS was warming up, Summit’s coaches filed a review with the TSSAA, challenging the result of the bout with Tullahoma.

The Trojans’ coaches argued that Cleveland Cyree, who competed in the 126-pound matchup, should have been disqualified, giving Summit six points and the overall match. Cleveland won his bout against the Trojans by decision.

Entering the tournament on Friday, Cleveland weighed in between 120 and 126 pounds, making him eligible for both weight divisions. The THS grappler competed at the 120-pound bout on the opening day. However, during weigh-ins on Saturday, he was listed at 126 pounds which, according to the rulebook, should have disqualified Cleveland from the remainder of the tournament.

According to the rulebook, “All wrestlers must weigh-in each day of the multiple-day event and they must weigh-in at the same weight class each day of the event. A wrestler is only eligible for two weight classes during a multiple-day, team-advancement tournament, and those two weight classes are determined at the first day weigh-in and cannot change during the remainder of the event.â€

After a discussion, TSSAA officials initially concluded that Summit was correct in its interpretation of the rules. However, on review, the TSSAA allowed Tullahoma to advance due to the timing of the Trojans’ protest.

“Technically, [Cleveland] should have been scratched,†said TSSAA Executive Director Mark Reeves. “It got missed… When it was first brought to our attention, we didn’t realize that the dual meet was over and everybody had left. If it had been brought to our attention immediately, which is what we thought initially had happened, then we would have reversed the outcome of the match where [Cleveland] wrestled and it would have been a nine-point swing and Summit would have won. We realized that the match was already finished and the results have already been reported. When the results have already been reported, even though you had an ineligible wrestler, it’s not a correctible error.

“According to Summit, they indicated that they had said something to the referee. The referee at that point is not going to be the one to make that call,†Reeves said. “We could only verify that at the table. They didn’t ask for the head table. I’m not faulting [summit], but they should have stopped until they got something from the head table, which they didn’t. We’ve got to take a look at some of our logistics and procedures of weigh-ins to try and eliminate something like that from happening in the future. Coach Morris wasn’t trying to skirt the rules or anything, he just had the wrong interpretation in his mind. It’s just an unfortunate at what happened.â€

Although the TSSAA upheld Cleveland’s win over the Summit grappler, he was disqualified from competing in the remainder of the tournament.

While Morris acknowledges he was in the wrong, he still feels a change is needed in the rulebook.

“The problem I have with that rule is that we have a kid that makes the weight for two weight classes,†Morris said. “In wrestling, you’re allowed to bump up one class higher than what you actually weigh. When we weighed him in, he weighed up to the next weight class that he was able to wrestle. They said he couldn’t wrestle that weight.

“The way I broke it down was that we are allowed to wrestle that weight, but we aren’t allowed to weigh that weight,†he added. “I think something has to change with that rule. It puts people at a disadvantage. If they want to bump a kid up, we are making a kid starve himself to make the weight to wrestle up and he’s not allowed to wrestle what he’s supposed to wrestle.â€

After being allowed to stay in the tournament, Tullahoma’s state run came to an end with a 36-31 loss to Knox Halls on Saturday.

The Wildcats cut it to a 26-22 matchup, but the Red Devils won back-to-back bouts, one by pinfall and another by a major decision (four points) to seal the overall contest.

“Our season is still not over yet,†Morris said. “We still have individual regions and the individual state tournament. Our goal is to go in and do as well as we can in the region tournament and actually win that tournament as a team, [because] they keep total points on how you do.

“We came in and we battled [against Knox Halls],†he added. “Obviously, we had technicality issues from the match before us, so that kept one of our best wrestlers out of the lineup during this match. I was really proud of our kids for the way they battled. That’s a very good team.â€

The individual region tournament is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Siegel High School. Start times have not yet been determined.

THS vs. Arlington

Against Arlington on Friday, Tullahoma opened up the contest by winning six of its first eight matches, including five by pinfall.

Dylan Pearson opened competition with a quick victory over Alan Roaten in the 182-pound division. After grabbing a 2-0 lead, Pearson scored a first-round fall (1:21) to put Tullahoma up 6-0.

In the 195-pound class, Morris elected to forfeit the match and give Arlington the points to tie the match at 6.

“That was one of the best kids [on Arlington’s] team,†Morris said. “We got a good kid, but we saw an opportunity to get six points at the 220. We’ve been a little shaky at that weight all year and we saw the opportunity that we could bump up one of our better kids up.â€

Morris’ strategy worked out, as the Wildcats followed with consecutive first-round pinfall wins to make it an 18-6 contest. In the 220-pound class, Mikey Lett defeated Trey Claus (1:49) and Christian Kazmark followed with a win over Johnathan Metcalf (0:45) in the 285-pound division.

Arlington got back on the scoreboard with a win in the 106-pound bout. After taking a 3-0 lead into the third round, Caleb Morgan kept Tullahoma’s Will Moran off the scoreboard, to notch a 5-0 decision victory (three points).

Tullahoma then won three-straight matches to increase its advantage to 36-9. Adam Rogers won his match in the 113-pound division by forfeit, while Cleveland and Devan Cyree notched back-to-back pinfall wins. Cleveland defeated Harrison Phillips with a quick first-round fall (0:21) in the 120-pound division. After building a 14-1 advantage, Devan got a second-round pinfall victory (2:21) over Josh Worley in the 126-poiund bout.

Just as quickly as the Wildcats built that lead, it vanished, as Arlington sealed the match with six-straight wins.

In the 132-pound class, Andrew Zarshenas notched a first-round fall (1:15) over Aaron Kelly. Arlington’s John Craft followed with a third-round pinfall over Dylan McElhaney at 138 pounds. The Tullahoma grappler took a 3-2 advantage into the final round, but Craft quickly erased that to go ahead 7-3. With 22 seconds remaining in the bout, Craft notched the pinfall victory to cut it to a 36-21 match.

Arlington then added a pair of close decision victories to pull even closer to the Wildcats.

In the 145-pound bout, Tullahoma’s Andy Shahan held a 7-5 advantage over Bailey Hulley heading into the final round. With a late near fall, Hulley grabbed an 8-7 edge and the match ended that way.

Down 6-5 heading into the final round of the 152-pound bout, Tullahoma’s Chris Howse couldn’t get the points he needed to get the win over Michael Mowery. A late escape, followed by a takedown allowed Mowery to get the 9-5 decision victory.

In the 160-pound bout, Tullahoma’s Tristan Scott took a 5-3 advantage over Nathan Enzor into the second round. With 59 seconds left in the second period, Enzor tied the match at 5. Twenty seconds later, Enzor caught Scott and pinned him, to make it a 36-33 contest with one match remaining.

After taking a 6-2 advantage into the second round, Tullahoma’s Jared Bonee couldn’t pull out the victory over Aaron Moore at 172 pounds. With 45 seconds remaining in the second period, Moore caught Bonee and secured the pinfall, to allow Arlington to get the comeback victory.

“Once again, it’s getting pinned. It’s the same story we had last Thursday [against Siegel in the region tournament],†Morris said on Friday. “We were winning 36-9 in the dual meet and got pinned in four matches. It’s disheartening because this team is good enough to place here, which we can still come back and do tomorrow. We just can’t keep getting pinned. It’s not a secret recipe, it’s not a secret move, it’s just having heart and going out there and fighting your tail off.

“We knew coming in that this was a good team,†he added. “We had pretty much everything going our way right off the bat. All we needed was one more win and we basically had it locked up, but we couldn’t get it in the last six weight classes.â€

Wildcats vs. Summit

Tullahoma came back on Saturday and got its lone victory of the tournament over Summit. Trailing 21-12, the Wildcats rallied to pick up the 33-30 win.

The Trojans opened the competition with a victory in the 120-pound division. After the match was tied at 2 in the second period, Sean Butler pinned Jovahny Sanchez with one second left in the period, to give Summit a 6-0 advantage.

Tullahoma followed with-back-to-back victories to go ahead 9-6.

Cleveland took an 8-0 advantage over Esteban Remillard into the third round. A late stalling penalty called on Cleveland awarded Remillard a point, and the THS wrestler missed getting a major decision, winning by an 8-1 decision.

Devan followed with a first-round pinfall victory over Kyle Kish in the 132-pound class. After leading 4-0, Devan pinned Kish with 58 seconds left in the first period.

Summit quickly tied the match with a victory in the 138-pound class. McElhaney took a 4-1 advantage into the third round, but couldn’t hang on over Sawyer Knott. With two late close falls, Knott was able to pick up the 9-6 decision and tie the match at 9.

The Trojans followed with back-to-back decision wins to take a 15-9 advantage. Kobey Desselle notched a 7-0 decision victory over Bryce Triplett in the 145-pound division. Mark Sweeney followed with a 9-5 decision over Shahan.

Howse followed with a decision victory for Tullahoma, to make it a 15-12 contest. Howse nearly missed winning by a major decision, and defeated Chris Bartol 15-9 in the 160-pound division.

Summit’s Zack Carney then got a pinfall victory over Scott in the 170-pound division. After Carney built a 4-0 advantage in the second period, he pinned Scott with 23 seconds left in the round, to increase the Trojans’ lead to 21-12.

Momentum quickly shifted as Tullahoma won four-straight matches, to go ahead 33-21.

With 16 seconds left in the opening round, Pearson pinned Dylan Wingerter in the 182-pound class. Lett followed with a 32-second pinfall victory over Matt Bradshaw in the 195-pound bout. With 36.8 seconds remaining in the first round, Haden Eggleston caught Ruben Ladron for the pinfall win in the 220-pound class.

“That’s what made us a good team this year,†Morris said. “Normally teams have certain weight classes that they are good at. It’s either down low, in the middle, or up top in the weight classes. We are fortunate to have Pearson, Mikey Lett, Haden Eggleston and Christian Kazmark up top and they are all seniors.

“Haden is the only one that doesn’t really have any wrestling experience, but he stepped up huge in that match,†he added. “That right there could have been the difference. I say that was probably the difference in the match. That’s something that we weren’t expecting but he pulled out a win for us.â€

Kazmark followed with a 5-2 decision victory over Josh Bouser in the 285-pound division. With the match tied up at 2 in the second round, Kazmark got an escape and followed that with a takedown, to take a 5-2 advantage into the third round. Kazmark was able to hold on for the 5-4 victory.

Summit closed out the match with back-to-back wins. After Tullahoma’s Moran was not pinned in the 106-pound bout, it allowed the Wildcats to get the win over the Trojans. Moran lost to Zach Thomas by way of a 12-6 decision, to make it a 33-24 contest with one bout left.

After double checking the score with officials, Morris forfeited the 113-pound bout to Summit, and advanced with the 33-30 victory.

“We wrestled a lot better, but it came down to not getting pinned. That was the difference in the match right there,†Morris said. “Like I told you last night, you can’t give up bonus points. When you’re wrestling good teams, it comes down to close matches all the time, it always does. But when you give up the extra points, it makes it hard to win. Hopefully we learned a lesson last night.â€

THS vs. Knox Halls

After moving past Summit, the Wildcats ended their tournament with a close loss to Knox Halls. Tullahoma led early in the contest, but couldn’t recover late and the Red Devils went on to win 36-31.

In the opener, Devan put the Wildcats in front 4-0 with a major decision victory over Trey Lepper. After leading 10-3 after two periods, Devan continued to be aggressive, and nearly missed a technical fall (five points) on his way to the 21-7 major decision win.

Knox Halls got on the board after Eric Brady defeated Kelly by a 10-6 decision in the 132-pound division. Brady built a 10-0 advantage after two periods, but had to survive a third-round comeback attempt. Kelly received a point for an escape, two more for a takedown and three for a close fall, but couldn’t get enough points to get the win.

Tullahoma extended its lead to 10-3 after McElhaney came through with a third-round fall victory over Matthew Gold in the 138-pound class. After the bout was tied at 6 after two rounds, McElhaney scored the pinfall victory just 26 seconds into the third period.

Knox Halls tied up the match with back-to-back wins. In the 145-pound bout, Joe Fox defeated Triplett by way of a 22-8 major decision. Sirrel Robinson followed with a 9-3 decision victory over Shahan in the 152-pound class.

The Red Devils then took the lead with a third-round fall in the 160-pound bout. After trailing 10-1 to Colton McMahon, Howse was caught for the pin with 57 seconds remaining in the period, as Knox Halls took a 16-10 advantage.

The Red Devils extended their lead to 20-10 with a major decision victory in the 170-pound class. Luke Harp shut out Scott on his way to a 9-0 major decision.

Knox Halls followed with a pinfall victory in the 182-pound division to make it a 26-10 matchup. After Pearson got a late reversal that tied the matchup at 6, Tyler Kalish caught Pearson and pinned him with 13 seconds remaining in the third round.

Lett and Eggleston followed with back-to-back falls to make it a 26-22 matchup. After building a 5-0 advantage, Lett pinned Tanner Huff with 1:18 left in the first round of the 195-pound bout. Eggleston followed with a second-round fall (3:03) over Lucas Wright in the 220-pound class.

Knox Halls added back-to-back wins that ultimately sealed the Wildcats’ fate. With 35 seconds remaining in the first round, Walton Elkins pinned Tullahoma’s Luke Champion in the 285-pound division. Chris Nielsen followed with a 14-0 major decision over Moran in the 106-pound class, to make it a 36-22 matchup.

Rogers added a win to Tullahoma’s column, defeating Tolliver Justice by way of an 8-2 decision.

With the overall match in hand, Knox Halls forfeited the final match, giving Tullahoma’s Sanchez a win in the 120-pound division, to win the contest 36-31.

It's either a pin or a fall, not a pinfall...

"Tech-pin" is another term getting used more often since your early days ol wrestling patriarch.

Red Bank Comeback Trips Hixson In Vandergriff Duals

Key District Match For These Two Will Be January 14 At Red Bank

Saturday, November 28, 2015 - by John Hunt

The last time Red Bank's wrestling Lions faced the Hixson Wildcats in the Hixson gym, Hixson won a close match to earn a spot in the State Duals.

These same two teams squared off at Hixson Saturday afternoon in the championship match of the Vandergriff Duals, but the results were different as the Lions rallied for a 34-31 win.

Red Bank had won its pool at Hixson Middle School with wins over Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe by 67-12, Brainerd by 78-6, East Ridge by a 73-6 final and a commanding 69-10 win over pool runner-up James Clemens.

Hixson won three matches in its pool with a 64-12 win over East Hamilton, 64-16 verdict over Shelbyville and a harrowing 40-39 win over Walker Valley in the match to determine who the first-place team would be.

But in the championship match where action began at 126 pounds, Hixson used a decision from Spencer Groves, a pin from Isaac Yates and a major decision from Cederick Harris to build a 13-0 lead.

Gabriel McDuffie put the Lions on the board with a first-period pin at 145 before Hixson made it 19-6 with a first-period pin from Landon Goforth.

Red Bank then won the next four matches -- including pins from Kaine Kell and David Johnson, a major decision from Robert Perry and a forfeit to Devin Crawl to lead for the first time at 29-18.

Hixson won three of the final five matches, but it was a stirring 6-4 victory by Red Bank's Blake Reichel at 113 pounds that ultimately clinched the win for the Lions.

Red Bank then forfeited the final match at 120 for the final three-point margin.

"That was a great team effort, probably the best we've had since I've been at Red Bank," said Lion coach Shane Turner, who is now starting his fourth season in charge.

"We left some points out there, but we got bonus points in critical spots and we were able to keep it close in matches where I wasn't sure we could. This is the season we've been waiting on as we've taken our lumps to get here and this is the first tournament we've won since I've been their coach.

"It's the next one on January 14 (at Red Bank) that counts as the winner of that one goes to the State Duals," Turner concluded.

Hixson coach Garrick Hall knows that the next one is the one that counts, so he and his team didn't do anything out of the ordinary to win.

"I didn't think we did a good job of finishing today. Some of our guys fought really hard and stepped up, but we didn't get as many bonus points as last year and Red Bank did," Hall said following a post-tournament pep talk with his team.

"We have a big target on our back and we're aware of that, but we didn't move anybody around as we just wrestled them straight up to see what we could do. I felt like we had a good day as tournaments like this let us know what we need to work on.

"I was really proud of Jerrold Higginbottham in our match against Walker Valley. We was getting beat pretty good and came back to get a pin and that put us in position to win. But we're 5-1 now and still working to get better," Hall concluded.

The Walker Valley Mustangs also had a good day as they finished with a 3-1 record, including a convincing 64-17 win over James Clemens in the battle for third place.

"We're improving, but we still have a long way to go," said Walker Valley coach Alan Morris after that last win.

"We lost a close one to Hixson, but it's still November. We learned two things from that Hixson match. First off, we have to learn how to wrestle tough in matches that matter and we have to get in better shape," Morris added.

Other teams in Saturday's tournament included Shelbyville, East Hamilton, Brainerd, East Ridge and Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe.

Siegel wrestling honors Loupe

Tom Beckwith/DNJ Correspondent

Melanie Loupe was honored prior to Siegel's first home wrestling match Wednesday. Loupe's son Mason, a football player and wrestler, died in September.

MURFREESBORO â€” Melanie Loupe walked between the two rows of Siegel High wrestlers.

She held both hands out, touching hands as she walked onto the mat where the Siegel High wrestling program was honoring her son, Mason Loupe, who died nearly two months ago from a gunshot wound to his head.

Mason Loupe was a football player and wrestler at Siegel

Melanie Loupe paused occasionally to hug a wrestler and then give another a peck on the cheek.

"The love that those boys have shown me...  Literally, anything that I have needed they have helped me," Melanie Loupe said. "And coach (Lee Ramsey) as well. Coach Ramsey will randomly text me and tell me, "I'm thinking about you, and I love ya.'

"He was a second father to my son."

The wrestling program has become an extended family since her son's death Sept. 2.

Siegel's wrestlers â€” past and present â€” continue to watch over the woman they affectionately refer to simply as 'Momma Loupe.'

Some take her home from Scales Elementary, where she is a fourth-grade teacher. She hasn't drive much since her son's death.

Sometimes they leave a note of encouragement on her desk at school.

Others simply send her text messages with the words, 'Love ya Momma.'

And when she moved out of her home for a condo after Mason Loupe's death, the wrestling team helped move her.

"I didn't lift a finger," said Melanie Loupe, beaming with pride of the wrestling team. "I didn't want to stay in the house any longer.

"The wrestling team came over and moved the entire house in two days."

Siegel forfeited the 160-pound weight class — Mason Loupe's weight â€” Wednesday in wins over Rossview and Warren County

"Everything we do is to honor him in the right way and to help in the healing in the right way," Ramsey said.

"His mom was been incredibly strong. I think that's one of the things we are honoring. We want her to see how much he means to us."

Ramsey said he made sure to clear everything with the TSSAA.

"It was a slight difference in how a match runs," Ramsey said.

Melanie Loupe was also presented a wrestling poster of her son.

She said she has nothing but found memories of her son on the wrestling mat. She remembers when Ramsey had to show her exactly how close she was allowed to get to the mat without being too close. Mason Loupe wrestled on the Stars' varsity team as a freshman.

"Mason was a magnificent football player," Melanie Loupe said. "But he was a beast on the mat."

Melanie Loupe said she plans on remaining close to the Siegel program and continue to attend matches.

"That was my world," she said. "That's what we did during the week. Mason would have to work and cut weight. I'd go and get him something to eat as soon as he was weighed in. He'd get on the mat and just tear it up. He was amazing on the mat.

She still watches her son's past matches.

"There are times I'll just turn on my computer and watch him wrestle," she said. "I just watch them over and over."

SCHS wrestling team opens season with win

The Sevier County High School wrestling team had its first match of the season last Tuesday. And the Smoky Bears came away victorious despite only having two returnees from last year's team on the active roster.

SCHS opened its 2015-16 season with a home match against South Doyle, Clinton and Karns. Eugene Hennigan and Tyson Johnson were the lone returnees available for the Smoky Bears on Tuesday, as the remaining returnees were still busy with the football team and its pursuit of a state championship. These multi-sport athletes include Dalton Mitchell, Chris Bohanan, Luke Ellis, John Barnes, Ethan Shults, Tyler Raper and Tyler Gilliam.
