TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION

It seem as if Washington DC is not the only place this type of stuff happens....

Townsend will seek increased sales tax if Blount bid fails

If a May referendum to increase the local sales tax from 2.25 to 2.75 percent fails in Blount County, Townsend City Commission is ready to hold its own vote.

Commissioners voted 5-0 Tuesday night to seek such an increase in that event.

Voters in Alcoa and Maryville have already increased their sales taxes and will be ineligible to vote in the Blount County referendum on the sales tax.

If Blount County voters fail to increase the local sales tax, Townsend voters would be set to vote on the issue in the August election.

Townsend has a good tourist base and most of the sales tax would be supported by the tourist industry, said Townsend Mayor Michael Talley. Commissioner Kenny Myers estimated that 75 percent of the tax would be paid by tourists.

It is not known how much yearly the increased sales tax would bring into the Townsend coffers, but Myers estimated $20,000.

In light of this action, I will be issuing DC-ish license plates to the constituency of the Municipalities of Murvil and Alcoee.

No one is going to take our football money.

Fight the Power!!!

Go Alcoee.

Amen.

I'm kinda slow too...how's it "without representation" if it comes to a vote?

Follow along here....

Alcoa and Murvil are both in Blount Co.

Both Alcoa and Murvil have passed sales tax increases to fund...err..."education."

Blount Co. has already had a vote on this referendum already and was defeated.

Alcoa and Murvil citizens must pay Blount Co. taxes.

If citizens of Alcoa and Murvil are NOT ALLOWED to vote on a sales tax increase in a county that they reside in...what would you call it?

When it fails again (and it will if city residents are allowed to vote) all of the smaller cities in Blount Co. will pass their own sales tax increase (Louisville, Friendsville, Townsend, Walland, Tallassee etc.) then the only recourse that the County will have is to raise property taxes (again) to cover a $200M debt.

Now I'm really having trouble understanding...Alcoa and Maryville had a city vote to increase their respective sales taxes, yet Townsend wishes to do the same and it's wrong? You imply that you won't be allowed to cast a vote on the Blount Co. ballot...do you reside in Blount Co? Look, I'm not trying to be a "smart aleck", I'm just having a hard time grasping how the results of a city ballot affect the eligibility of a citizen to cast a vote in the County of their residence.

    • You didn't spell Greeneville and Elizabethton correctly in your sentence.  4A has the best teams in Upper East TN.  Carter County All-Stars and Greene County All-Stars is the Superbowl now.
    • Yeah, but if he goes to Science Hill they are guaranteed at least a win over Kingsport and that's basically the NET Superbowl
    • I expect Sevier County might be pretty good, perhaps Mo West as well.     But I don't see either of them getting out of round 2.          The rest of the region gets smoked in round 1.            Except for those once-in-a-blue-moon anomaly years the NET big schools are pretty much the same every season.
    • Wanted to see if all of you would lift up Kyle James family in prayer. Kyle was one of the best wrestlers to ever come out of Soddy Daisy and as some of you know he lost his house a few weeks ago and now his family and friends mourns his passing. Not sure if any of you were around in early 2000’s when Kyle was wrestling at Soddy, but he was a 3 time state champ and a Fargo AA along with going to Colorado to train to make the Olympic team. That goal was never reached due to medical issues, but he was an amazing wrestler and his family is as good as gold. If you were around at that time and have any pictures of Kyle, please go onto Alexy Winesburgh FB page and post. Thanks, Doug Benton
    • My opinion the 8 teams will be-  Greenback, Wartburg, Gordonsville, Jo Byrns, Eagleville, Bruceton, Dresden, and South Fulton. Gordonsviile is probably the favorite but I wont say it will be an easy road. With the right draw any of the 8 could win it.
