Best wrestler to never win a TN state title

Got a few names on the thread, most of whom I am familiar with all worthy candidates.

For my money and at least in my opinion the best by far to never take the gold was Josh Patton. Only one he lost two in the last couple of years in high school was Camron Croy and I think had they wrestled again he would have beaten him. Josh had fantastic defense, beat several nationally ranked kids at open tournaments and basically was wrestling at a high college level while still in high school. Terrible luck with injuries kept him from competing at all in at least one state tournament and hindered him in others. The 189 class 5 and 6 years ago was a murderers' row and with the possible exception of Croy, Patton was the best.

Thomas Berry from Independence beat him at the Clarksville Slamfest I think their senior year. Berry never medaled but he was good. Edited by WrestlingGod

I wasn't aware of that loss. Doesn't change my opinion though but if true Berry is on a pretty short list. Patton didn't lose many.

Nope sorry, mid informed, Patton beat Berry in OT at the Slamfest. But josh beat him good every other time they faced before, apologies.

Let's take it one step further...Best TN wrestler to never MEDAL at the state tournament?

I think if Raulston would've stayed at 195 and not dropped to 182 this year he would've had a good chance to win it. Lindsay Aragon should've won it his junior year(pinned the state champion that year in under a minute if I'm correct) Qauntal Langford definitely. Rex Shotts. Keegan Matlock possibly.

Casey Brewster

Casey Brewster for sure won a state title against Kozier from Karns. My votes would go to a few guys I know well in Rabbit Turner (Red Bank/Soddy Daisy), Casey Cothron (Red Bank/Bradley), Quantel Langford (Cleveland), Chris Bird (East Ridge), Daniel Otero (Clarksville NE), Quinton "Rampage" Jackson (Raleigh-Egypt), Josh Baker (Maryville), & maybe the Larimer kid from Overton.

Yea, Josh was steam rolling to an undefeated senior year where no one his weight our above would likely beat him in state until a 3 lb minpin or something came out of no where to derail his finish. Sad day, almost as sad as a knee injury vs Tyler Sells last season and a canker sore vs undefeated Tyler Garrison... At least Garrison has another shot at a perfect season. Sells' younger brother Matt even more. There's been some painful moments over the years... It's called the Blackman Blues 😜😭

James Vance (John Overton): 3X State Finalist @ the true state championships (everyone was together), Lost his senior year to Patrick Hagan (Father Ryan) in the finals.  Vance was ridding tough on top when he made the decision to hit a farside cradle.  Hagan slipped the arm and posted and ended up getting a reversal and three nearfall points and won a state title.

Patrick Hagan proved that you may only receive one opportunity to win a big match and you better be prepared to take advantage of that opportunity.

No doubt Sommers that Tyler would love another shot at senior year.....without a torn ACL.....

hmmmm... I've been holding off, but here it goes... I knew a guy once who went 96-9 in hs eventually getting 3rd as a jr just out of a cast from a Shattered leg inflicted by a 300 lineman in football, and then with a 103 temp his sr yr... (Not to mention a crazy bro who kept him up all night till Thurs AM)...lol -

then most notable,,, He was a 2 time all american (not d1) but losing to bobby lashley and Tito ortiz in route and posting wins over all americans from every division overall he was also 106-24 in college... placing in every collegiate tourney save 1. plus this wrestler placed in 2 nationally recognized tourneys in the same yr...cal and naia...

...name another non state champ to do all of that? Heck not many state champs From Tennessee had done that ...if the question was who was the best 50 or 100 to ever wrestle from tn considering hs and college this one has to be a shoe in, IMHO...

Any guesses?

    • RR, you might remember. Didn’t someone hide the kicking shoe that game? It seems I remember we had missed a kick the week before, and we needed all the points we could get. We thought we had a better chance going for two, so $?&@$ hid the shoe after the first miss that game. No one on our sideline looked for it very hard.
    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
