Maryville should have done this vs DaHaven

At all levels of baseball, a protest is allowed for a misapplication or misinterpretation of a rule but NOT for judgment calls.  If a baseball game is protested, typically umpires will stop right then and get it right (correct the issue if necessary) to nullify the protest by calling a “higher up†for the correct ruling.  In football and most other sports, there is no game time remedy to correct the misapplication of a rule during the game.  I agree that “judgment calls†should definitely be lived with because they are just part of the game (in all sports games).

In the Maryville game, there was a gross misjudgment of the “lineman down fieldâ€, but not a misapplication of a rule.  However, in OK, there has been a gross misapplication of a rule.  That’s why the OK situation is totally different than the Maryville situation for me.  Consequently, I’m not sure which side I fall on in the OK game issue.  Maybe, football should develop a procedure and institute a game time remedy to stop the game for a few minutes and call the district or state office when referees do not know the rule needed.   Stopping a game for this reason would rarely happen since most refs know the penalty rules.  Those refs would have gotten it right with a phone call and there would have been further problem. JMHO

Extremely well put!  Outstanding job.

Excellent point ! I hadn't really thought of that as far as the difference between a Misjudgment and a Misapplication ! I would be in favor of this procedure , and more than likely it would give the Refs even more incentive to make sure they know all the rules.  It would be embarrassing for them to be overturned in front of everybody just because they didn't know a Rule .

One would think the rules could be dumped into a PDF and downloaded to your ipad, then the zebras just do a quick look for anything that is questionable.      Or at least some of the more obscure rules and penalties could be stored on your ipad.    Like there is one that if you fair catch a punt and time is running out you get a free kick for a field goal, "free" meaning the kicker is the only player on the field, he puts it on a tee like for a kickoff and tries a FG

Would not delay the game much and the calls would be right.      It wouldn't hurt for the coaches to do the same and consult it before yelling @ a ref

pepvol is right. Mark Dodson ran wild on us that night and even though I know it was a blown call we set our self up to be in that bad situation. When we were driving the ball and fumbled I knew then we blew our chance to put Whitehaven away and gave them new life. When I watch Ole Miss play I always look forward to seeing Dodson because we got to play against him twice in high school. The only thing I wished from that experience is to have replay just for that one game each year in order to save a firestorm afterward.

I agree Barney. The call on the 2 point play sucked. But! That fumble by Trenton Shuler was killer. I thought the whistle should have blown because his forward progress had stopped. That fumble gave Whitehaven life. I believe if Maryville makes it 14-0 on that drive the game is different. 2 plays after fumble Dodson takes it 75 yds to the house.

White haven was absolutely awesome that year and I'm always for the underdog but I see the game with neutral eyes. I have seen this play many times I don't ever see a penalty. The way the Maryville fans on the board handled it was classy. I would have flipped out. Can someone bring proof that it was the correct call. Someone posted a picture of the catch and the lineman was still behind the line of scrimmage. Does anyone think the call was made correctly if so why?

My memory is fading in my old age but wasn't there some kind of call several years ago in a Maryville vs Heritage game that the refs completely screwed up on? Some type of misapplication ? Am I just dreaming this?

I'm fading on the details also, but I think it was the 99 game. I want to remember it having something to do with a dead ball foul and Maryville should have retained possession late in the game but the ball went over to Heritage and they ran the clock out.

It was 1999, MHS against Heritage.  HHS was driving very late in the game for the potential winning touchdown.  MHS held HHS on a 4th and long and by tackling the player driving him out of bounds.  After the runner was out of bounds, a MHS player hit him out of bounds drawing a PF.  The referee (with Quarles arguing) awarded Heritage a first down allowing HHS to continue the drive.  Heritage scored the winning touchdown a few plays later winning 26 - 21  Since it was a dead ball foul, the application of the penalty should have been AFTER the play, thus the correct call would have been MHS possession 1st and 10, and then march off the 15 yards.  In the paper on Monday (or maybe Saturday), the referee association admitted that the referee misapplied the rule and, in fact, it should have been Maryville’s ball.  (No court case followed, of course).

No You march off the Dead Ball Foul then You have 1st and 10 not 1st and 25 as you insinuated...
