When did headbands become illegal?

GC has done that every game that I've seen since Wilkins took over. Bad sportsmanship in my opinion, but no rule against it. Is there Pioneer42? lol.

Gibson County has always done that. Even in the Heather Butler days.... That has gone on way before Wilkins ever came into the picture at Gibson County.

I can't remember. I know the Humboldt boys assistant coach will deliberately turn his head and stick his hand out to opposing players when they come to meet him.

I don't have a dog in this fight. Couldn't even tell you where Gibson Co. or Riverside HS are, but this forum caught my attention. To blame, or even closely insinuate that a team loss because they had to remove their headbans is simply ridiculous. Not sure why the refs thought they were illegal, but in post season play little things like this gets more attention from them because there is a better chance someone from Hermitage is in attendance. I also saw a post, think it was the pioneer, saying the refs should be fined. Yeah, let's go down that road. Start fining refs for mistakes and see how fast teams will have to pull people from the crowd to ref a game. These guys aren't breaking the bank doing this, it is not their full time job, they spend a lot of time away from home, take time off from work, blah, blah, blah, ya'll know. I've been a part of a lot of contests, from all four corners, I cannot recall a single game that was decided by an official. Teams win or lose, period. Lighten up, remember IT IS HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL, in the grand scheme of things, winning or losing this game isn't even a blip on the radar. Now, let's pray the weather cooperates with the State tourney, so these young girls can enjoy their moment.

It didn't cost us the game, but the commissioner said the headbands were legal. I have seen the refs before. One of the refs is one that caused a lot of drama in the Clarkrange/Meiggs game last year and he called a late technical last year in the UC championship game on the bench with 2 minutes left in the game that was uncalled for. Every time he is on the floor he is a problem. He refereed the GC/Marshall County fiasco in 2009 that railroaded us. But let me reiterate again.bThis did not cost us the game. This is the type of stuff that happens sometimes and we didn't handle adversity well at all. We played poorly and Riverside played a fantastic defensive and ball control game. There is no commissioner with the TSSAA and the middle of your post probably tells the story you want out.   We had a guy call 4 techs on us in the first round and lost by 5.   I feel your pain.  What doesn't kill us makes us stronger.

If I am not mistaken, it is standard operating procedure for the lead official to check with each head coach at some point inside of the 10 minute mark during warm-ups to verify that all players are legally attired. If not, the required change must be made before the offending player takes the floor.

 

The headbands were most likely in violation due to the logo (assuming they did not violate the color ruling). If that was the issue, I cannot see why turning them inside out would not have been acceptable, but if they were forced to remove them there was most likely a very good reason.

 

As to blaming officials for losses, I used to tell my son: "Do you know how to spot a loser? He's the one complaining about the officials. Act like a winner even when you lose."

 

Officials are human. They make mistakes and miss calls (yeah, some of them seem to be worse than others), but in 50 years of watching and participating in sports I can count on one hand the number of times that I have seen an official that I thought was out to get any particular team.

 

Players commit turnovers. Players miss layups. Players miss wide open jumpers. Players miss free throws. Players expect officials, however, to be perfect.

 

Coaches make mistakes in substitutions, misuse timeouts, and make strategic errors in offensive and defensive decisions. Many of them expect officials to be perfect, though.

 

In my opinion, if most folks were completely honest they would actually tell you that they don't mind when officials make mistakes, so long as it benefits the team of their choice.

 

You cannot expect officials to be perfect. You can only ask them to be consistent.

Riverside girls are a hardworking bunch...but I love to watch a game with great defense     

Riverdale girls no doubt got creative on defense vs. Smyrna.  They must have worked their tails off on that gameplan!
