Football coaching salaries

Recommended Posts

Are you shocked we are way behind? Because I am not shocked at all. People would be upset if a high school teacher/coach would be upset if they knew we as teachers and coaches made that much.

I agree folks would get upset, but would they be willing to work 50-60 hours a week for 40-50k as a head coach? To get and keep the best coaches, you got to pay them. A boy that plays football will usually tell you...other than the father, most influental man in their younger life was their HS football coach. 60-180 players depending on school size, that a big responsability and they need to be compensated accourdingly.

I agree with you again. The answer is NO they would not be willing to put in those type of hours and spending the countless hours away from your family. These are also the same parents that sit in the stands on Friday nights and bad mouth everything that is going on during the game.

What school system in Tennessee pays coaches 40k....Most of the time they will pay you to be a teacher(about 40k) then tack on an extra 3 or 4k to coach...I promise you no one in Tennessee is coaching because it pays well. Most coaches would make more if you paid them minimum wage for the hours they put in versus a set supplement of 3 or 4k.

I have no sympathy for these coaches like the rest of you do. Coaches know exactly what they are getting into when it comes to salary and hours they would have to work. They knew this form playing football in high school and knew it when they went to college for their degree. Lets tell the truth, most of these "teachers" are there so they can coach. Just like police and firefighters, they knew exactly how much they would make when they enter the academy yet they made the choice. Teachers/coaches knew it too.

Schools are there to educate, not to play sports (exception to Alcoa). Sports are extra curriculm activity that is just that, EXTRA. All school funds should be spent on students, not athletes.

Does Alcoa show all the graduates or valedictorians on their giant scoreboard or is reserved for the guys who can run for  touchdown or can make a tackle?

Nobody needs to base pay around what Alabama does.  Their state ranks anywhere between 41-43 when it comes to state education.  TN is not much better in the upper 20's.

So think about that, schools are paying a coach $125k a year to coach and not teach.  If they were really thinking about the kids, they would take that salary and pay the first year tution for 8-10 college bound seniors.

I have a question: Would the coaching and play on the field at the Tennessee D1 5A & 6A schools be significantly better if they all paid the head football coach $100,000.00+ and did not require them to coach?

yes but the return on investment is not there.

Why would the play on the field and the coaching be significantly better just by paying the head coach more money? IMO, if you have a coach that has averaged being 5 & 5 the past 10 years he is not going to get better just by paying him an extra 50 or 60 thousand dollars. He will still be 5 & 5 but will just be making more money.

If the return on investment is not there to pay the head coach $100,000 per season then why are other states moving in that direction? Is Tennessee that much smarter than the other states? What data are you basing your decision on or is that just a gut feeling?

agree 100%.....and those same crying parents probably never played a lick past high school if that or ever coached a down. That's the ones that yell the loudest.....they know better cause they watch Monday Night Football.

I meant total teachers pay plus coaching supplement 40K-50K. I know my dad made more to coach by his 3rd year in Ga than he did in TN 20 years later.

    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
    • I would not put too much stock into the UH over Eagleville. From what I understand they were pretty banged up in that tourney. Catcher was out, they were throwing pretty deep in their bullpen and a few key players were beat up in their infield. Sounds like they are pretty healthy heading into the district tournament. Look at their schedule, they played some really good teams.
