Why doesn't maryville play other states top teams?

Recommended Posts

What bugs me is all of these middle and west Tennessee guys saying that East Tennessee football teams are inferior. Anyone with common sense can see that this just isn't true. East Tn has been very well represented in the state championship games lately. And it seems like a lot of years East Tn teams win championships in atleast half of the classes. So how exactly are East Tn teams inferior?

This topic has always bugged me.  In the early 2000's people were all upset that Maryville was dominating 4A and they said that they would be terrible in 5A and they wouldn't be able to beat the likes of Riverdale and the "big boys."  Then Maryville moved up to 6A and they were immediately competitive and began beating those teams that people said they wouldn't be able to beat.  Now they cry because Maryville isn't playing the big time out of state teams.  What will they say if Maryville beats a lot of those teams?  Should Maryville step it up and start playing college teams?

Anyway, if you ask me high school football is not about playing the out of state teams.  It is about local sports.  It isn't meant to make people travel to different states to watch their kids play.  It is about rivalries with cross-town or cross-county high schools.  It is about playing those familiar teams with a sprinkle of playing the unknown in the playoffs.  That is what makes it fun and great.  Sure, I would like to see Maryville play a competitive team every single weak and have there be a lot of drama in the games, but I don't think that Maryville should seek out better competition from out of state schools.  That isn't what high school football is about.

It's no longer 1995... No, High School sports isn't only about Local tie-ins... ESPN, Fox Sports and other Media says differently. So, I disagree.

Webb,Alcoa and Knox West were really good. 2 were state champs and another was a state runner up.  Knox West whipped Hillsboro. Hillsboro whipped Ridgeway badly. Whitehaven was lucky to beat Ridgeway.

Hillsboro beat Ridgeway... Whitehaven beat Ridgeway... Any comparisons you want to point out to "hate" are null and VOID.

Webb and Know West last beat Maryville when? Play someone else. Yall got a 20 game wining streak on those guys don't it? LMAO

Props to Alcoa... At least they have have done what Whitehaven did within the last 10 years.

High school sports have existed as local sports for decades.  That is what is traditional and that is what makes it great.  Just because there has been promotion of interstate games within the past decade or so does not mean that this is how high school sports was meant to be played and should be played.  I, for one, do not want high school sports to become essentially college sports.  The fact that it is kids playing against neighboring schools and communities is what makes it fun and what makes it great.  Whole communities come out to see the games and you have parents in the stands talking about when they played the cross town rival that their son is now playing.  Those are things that make high school football different.  The more you make this an ESPN/Fox/Media commodity the more it is going to be solely about money and the more it is going to become like college and pro football and less of what really makes it great.

Maryville wasn't playing Webb and whoever else Out of district strictly for "neighborhood braggin' rights"... Being a part of a Staff at one point I KNOW the Home/Home Out of Conference games are more about MONEY than anything... Because I think (I could be wrong) Maryville isn't above making the program and school money I will continue saying they don't want to go OOS due to FEAR... H3LL, the Red Dragon played their neighborhood rival Alcoa on ESPN. The fact that they did that shows that they about the MONEY. VA, NC, SC, North GA. If you can drive to Science Hill or whatever why not just CROSS a State Line? LOL

Who cares about crossing a state line? I sure don't. I would prefer to not travel far to watch Maryville play. I don't have a desire to spend a whole weekend watching Maryville play. I would rather watch Maryville play Friday night. Go home and go to bed. Get up Saturday morning and get ready to watch the Vols later that day. Maryville is playing a state powerhouse in Fulton. The last few years Fulton could play with anyone. I promise you that. Instead of driving 8-10 hours I would much rather watch Maryville take on Ensworth,MBA or Brentwood Academy.
