What do people think are the chances of OR advancing further (or possibly winning) at state this year?  Already making the assumption that they will make it back to state.

Oak Ridge is probably the best "hometown" team in the state. Meaning the players grew up together in their own little area. Gonna be tough to beat the Memphis All-Stars.

Wildcats freshman team goes to 13-0 on the season as they knocked off Catholic frosh earlier tonight. #14 for Catholic is going to be a very good player. We are missing an inside presence. It looked like we had 1 kid on the bench who could fill that role, but he was never put into the game. He sure looks the part. Anybody that knows anything about the freshman team know why he doesn't play? His name is Jaheim Booker I think?. Just by looking at him you would think he will be good, but I know that doesn't always tell the tale.

Let me start by saying, Congrats to the freshman cats. With that said, this is partly why OR has been so consistent with their basketball program. It really started back in the Norris days as coach. You have to get kids some real game experience, that eventually transfers to the varsity level. It's probably safe to say OR is really the only team in our district that can field a true " freshman " team. If an AC, CC, Halls, Gibbs , etc.... Get a good freshman he has to play varsity right away. That's great if he's a Tee Higgins, and can handle the pressure of varsity ball, but for most it's on the job training, and sometimes can set a freshman back a little. Some don't even field a freshman team, and if they do, it's not with the ones that play varsity ball, for fear of injury. That why OR freshman have to play fultons, Catholics, grace, etc.. Because our league just doesn't have the luxury of OR. Does this make any sense?

Agree 100%. Oak Ridge is the only team with 2 really strong feeder Schools usually the top 2 in their district. That allows kids a lot more experience before they even get to High School. Clinton gets no one from Norwood anymore, AC doesn't get many from Lake City, Gibbs is in that weird zoning issue w Holston, Karns and Powell only have one true feeder school and Karns kids split after middle school, and typically Lafollette and Jacksboro take turns being good so Campbell Co doesn't really benefit as much from those 2 feeders. Freshman ball is just difficult for the rural areas.

Great points Nix!!! I think these " rural schools" are really going to have to start at the rec league levels in stressing the fundamentals and development more than winning. The coaches need to be teaching things the middle schools and high schools shouldn't have too, u know? Like jump stops, pivot feet, dribbling, etc. this would help all the schools you mentioned just be a lot more competitive. It will take years to catch up to what OR has established lately.

I agree with some points.  Catholic's current class of juniors all played varsity as freshmen, 3 of them (Smith, Reeder, and Scott) started most of the year as freshmen Reeder started every game.  Coach Hutchens threw them into the fire and the went 9-20 playing a difficult schedule. Last year when those guys were sophomores they went 20-9, were co-championship in the district and played a down to the wire regional semi-final game with Fulton at Fulton.  This years as juniors they are currently 15-3.  However, not all freshmen have the luxury of playing varsity so the experience of freshman ball helps with their development. Most smaller schools play their freshman on junior varsity.
