What's going on in Humboldt?

Jackson Sun article gives a little more info than Donovan Stewart posted. One of the factors cited was a lack of commitment during spring practice.

I've heard of 3 main probs with Humboldt football....lack of community support...I've been to a few home games the last few years at Barker Memorial and there were literally "tens" of fans in the stands...lack of commitment...hard to get players to come to practice....and thirdly...I've heard that the boys basketball coach "discourages" his players from playing football which means the best athletes in the school are in the gym instead of the football field and with a school that small you need your best athletes playing every sport they can...I think Coach Nowell noticed these real quickly during spring practice and that's why he decided to bail....I could be wrong....just my opinion...

All that is true but I would Like to dispute one. I sat With coach Abernathy at the sports south jamboree last year. He was there to watch 2 of his players play football. I asked Him point blank does he discourage basketball players from playing football. He said absolutely not. In fact he said he wished more played because high school is the extent of their playing careers and they need to be involved completely. Coach would not lie. Intense and I have Known coach Abernathy for many years and I believe him. To me that is a rumor blown up. Just my 2 cents which does not mean much.

I stand corrected....that was just the rumor I've heard the past few years....but it was just that...a rumor

Sometimes it's hard to figure out what you believe. I believe the Bible first, so I can't really believe in karma… I also believe that Dan Bland was a good man, a great coach, and a devoted and loyal employee. I also believe that the administration who railroaded him out of his "job" deserves just what they've gotten since that day. I really hate for the kids and community that a once proud program is now referred to as "a bad job", but I believe that I can put that aside and enjoy the egg on the HHS administrators collective faces for a while longer.

Nowell is 70 and was told that if wanted the job, he needs to stay for a long period of time (which I would assume 5+ years) and rebuild Humboldt football, which turned Norwell away. This is a community that does not care about any of their sports except basketball. Milan is a football town, well Humboldt is a basketball town. Yes, this is a Humboldt team that should be making deep playoff runs, especially since Union Coty and Peabody are 2A, but they also don’t have talent. I will also say this about Humboldt, the players that made it to the college ranks in the past, they struggled to stay in college, which to me, puts a bad light into Humboldt.

Having the person that hired you leave to go to a new position just weeks after you were hired, is a uncomfortable situation. I don’t blame Norwell at all for realizing that his alma mater, is in rough times, and it’ll take more than himself to build it back up, and he realized he can’t do it. I have no earthly idea where Humboldt goes from here, I just don’t.

If the administration isn't going to support the football team they might as well shut the program down it's really sad how much this once proud program has fallen another problem in my opinion was Coach Reid now I don't know him personally I've heard he's a great man but I was told that he was not a disciplinarian and had "optional" practices which the latter is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard Humboldt needs a coach who will coach those kids and put some discipline in that program I do hope Humboldt's football program can be built back up and start winning again because that will bring back support from the community

Man no issue. I just Like for some facts to be out there. To me the issue is this generation of kids in Humboldt. These kids are geared towards basketball. They need a coach for football that is more of a mentor than a coach. That will pursuade kids to come out and work. Coach Abernathy has done that. With the camps and having his camps with Shaq Is right on point. He has been beyond just a coach. I see A coach for football that will get back to cookouts for the community and inclusion for the whole town will convince parents to push their kids towards football. Let’s get down to facts. If a parent wants their kid to play football, they will play football. If a parent wants them to play just basketball they will play just basketball. I encourage my boys to play all sports. My boy who will be a senior has always been football and baseball. He is playing basketball this year. That is because Tcaintense and I have Encouraged him to do so. Will he be all district no. But he will have memories that he will have forever. So to me it is the parents and community. I want To say thank you to Intense for investing in my son and convincing him to play basketball. I challenge All to invest in a kid and enjoy their whole high school career. I am Done with the soap box.

It's just going to be a waste of a year for Humboldt in 2018. It's too late for the Vikings to find someone and believe in them. However, Humboldt people (school district primarily) should go out and look at the 2018 season and explore assistant coaches that could be a possible suitor to be a head coach for Humboldt in 2019. In addition to that, Humboldt probably should open up the checkbook even more, so they can bring their football program back. Needless to say, there's nothing that's appealing about Humboldt football now, and the future.

first of all, I'm a proud Humboldt Alumni regardless of the current situation with Humboldt football but all these comments about coach Bland, coach Reed etc.; is in the past and for the sake of the players (who are the most important people in this situation) Humboldt must move forward. Some of the comments, "Humboldt players that went to school not graduating" please provide proof & if they didn't graduate that had no affect on the High school football team. As someone stated, " Humboldt needs to find a coach that's a mentor" & that's going to give the program at least five (5) good years. I have no doubt that Humboldt will return to the top of in football.l

    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
    • I would not put too much stock into the UH over Eagleville. From what I understand they were pretty banged up in that tourney. Catcher was out, they were throwing pretty deep in their bullpen and a few key players were beat up in their infield. Sounds like they are pretty healthy heading into the district tournament. Look at their schedule, they played some really good teams.
