2019 Memphis high school football midseason report: Biggest surprises, bold predictions

Khari Thompson, Memphis Commercial AppealPublished 10:00 p.m. CT Sept. 25, 2019

As we approach the midpoint of the 2019 high school football season, it's time to review the first half and take a look at what's ahead.

Offensive MVP

Lincoln Pare, Houston. The 5-foot-9 running back is the focal point of the Houston offense, which is averaging 42 points. The Class 6A all-state selection has rushed for 953 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Defensive MVP

Bryson Eason, Whitehaven. After missing most of last season due to injuries, Eason has made a major comeback in his senior season. The four-star linebacker, who was Region 8-6A defensive player of the year as a sophomore, has 37 tackles, four tackles for loss and a sack for a Tiger defense that has held opponents to 5.4 points per game.

Biggest surprises

Bartlett. The Panthers (4-1) haven't had had a winning season in over a decade and are on the right track under first-year coach Lance Tucker. A big part of the success has been the defense, which is second in the region behind Houston in points allowed with 13.4 per game.

Germantown. Last year, Germantown finished the regular season undefeated. This year, the Red Devils are 1-4. It was expected to be somewhat of a rebuilding year with a new head coach and the loss of last year's talented senior class, but this record is surprising.

Must-see player

Omari Thomas, Briarcrest. The No. 9 defensive tackle prospect in the country according to the 247Sports Composite is committed to play in the Army All-American Bowl.

Jabari Small, Briarcrest. The Ole Miss running back commitment has shown big-play ability, racking up 11 touchdowns.

Marcus Henderson, MUS. The No. 12 offensive guard prospect in the country is committed to play in the Under-Armour All-American game and the Polynesian Bowl.

Bryson Eason, Martavius French and Tamarion McDonald. The Whitehaven trio is likely to play in the SEC next year and forms the best linebacker corps in the state.

Darin Turner, Central. The Arkansas commitment is one of the most explosive receivers in the area.

Big Games Coming

Oct. 4: Wooddale at Melrose

These two teams are each sitting atop Region 8-3A at 4-1 with no region losses. Wooddale quarterback John Jones is one of the region's most productive players. Melrose has held four of its five opponents to 18 points or less.

Oct. 11: Houston at Collierville

Collierville is undefeated at home and every one of its games has been decided by a touchdown or less. If the Dragons can keep it close, they may be able to score a key region upset

Oct. 18: ECS at St. George's

This one could be a region-clincher for ECS if it beats Lausanne the week before. ECS has Army linebacker commitment Austin Hill and three-star junior offensive lineman Dietrick Pennington. St. George's has Wisconsin receiver commitment Isaac Smith.

Oct. 25: Cordova at Houston

By the time this game comes around Cordova will have plenty of big-game experience with matchups against South Panola (Mississippi), Whitehaven and Briarcrest. Will it help the Wolves contain the Houston offense?

Nov. 1: MUS at Briarcrest

This matchup will likely decide the DII-AAA West region and features a pair of four-star linemen in MUS' Marcus Henderson and Briarcrest's Omari Thomas. Briarcrest has Ole Miss running back commitment Jabari Small and MUS has Memphis defensive back commitment Devonte Nelson.

Best coaching job

Gene Robinson, Fairley. The Bulldogs (4-1) have allowed only 39 points, 26 of which came in a loss to MHSAA Class 6A Hernando. Fairley has outscored region opponents 168-13 and is the favorite to close as Region 8-2A champs.

Five bold predictions

  • ECS will advance to the DII-AA state title game to face former coach Jonas Rodriguez and Battle Ground Academy.
  • Freedom Prep will advance to its first Class 1A state semifinal appearance.
  • The third time is the charm for Covington, which will beat Alcoa in the Class 3A title game after losing to the Tornadoes twice in a row.
  • Houston will be the only local team to finish the regular season undefeated.
  • After being upset by Southwind, Kirby beats the rest of its regular-season opponents by 21 or more.

Top 10 Memphis-area high school football games for Week 6

Khari Thompson, Memphis Commercial AppealPublished 6:00 a.m. CT Sept. 25, 2019

Game of the Week

Whitehaven (4-1) at Cordova (3-2)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Whitehaven picked up a 17-6 win over Southaven. The Tigers defense, which features three SEC-caliber linebackers in Bryson Eason, Martavius French and Tamarion McDonald is a must-see. But if Cordova, which fell 14-7 to Bartlett Friday night, can find a way to put up points it may have a shot at the upset. Each team has been held under 24 points every in game except one. Whitehaven scored 50 on Hamilton in the opener, and Cordova scored 41 on Lausanne the week before last.

Thompson's pick: Whitehaven 28, Cordova 17

Madison-Ridgeland Academy (4-1) (Miss.) at Briarcrest Christian (5-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Briarcrest, which has already won three region games, hosts an out-of-state foe in Masidon-Ridgeland, which started off 4-0 before losing to Philadelphia, Mississippi, by a touchdown last week. Ole Miss running back commitment Jabari Small of Briarcrest has already racked up 11 touchdowns.

Thompson's pick: Briarcrest 35, Madison-Ridgeland 28

Southwind (3-2, 2-0 8-5A) at Ridgeway (2-3, 1-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Southwind vaulted into first place in Region 8-5A with a huge shutout win over Kirby. Ridgeway has won two in a row, beating Mitchell 41-12 and Overton 36-6. Southwind running back Romal Webb, a transfer from Raleigh-Egypt, is a player to watch.

Thompson's pick: Southwind 28, RIdgeway 21

Bartlett (4-1) at White Station (3-2)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

White Station gave Collierville all that it could handle last week but fell to the Dragons on a fourth-and-1 touchdown on the final play of overtime. Bartlett became the first Tennessee team to beat Cordova with a 14-7 win.

Thompson's pick: Bartlett 28, White Station 24

FACS (3-2) at Millington (4-1)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

FACS put up 56 points in a win over St. George's last week. Millington has won three in a row since losing to rival Munford in the M&M bowl. Keep an eye on the quarterbacks in this one. FACS' Cole Putnam rushed for 240 yards last week and Millington's Tommy Clifton has been playing well.

Thompson's pick: Millington 24, FACS 14

Collierville (3-2) at ECS (4-1)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Collierville withstood a valiant comeback effort from White Station to stay undefeated at home. But the Dragons have yet to win on the road. The ECS defense, which is holding opponents to 6.6 points per game, posted its second shutout of the season last week against Northpoint Christian.

Thompson's pick: ECS 31, Collierville 20

Wooddale (4-1) at Lausanne (2-2)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Neither team has been in a close game. Lausanne has a pair of blowout wins and a pair of blowout losses. Except for its loss to Briarcrest, Wooddale has beaten every opponent by more than 30.

Thompson's pick: Lausanne 27, Wooddale 24

Kirby (3-1) at St. George's (2-3)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

The Kirby offense was shut out by Southwind last week. The St. George's defense gave up 56 points to FACS. How will each unit bounce back? Each team has an FBS player to watch. Kirby defensive lineman Corbet Mims is an Arkansas State commitment, and St. George's receiver Isaac Smith is a Wisconsin commitment.

Thompson's pick: Kirby 35, St. George's 24

Fairley (4-1) at MUS (4-1)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Fairley has dominated each of its Class 2A opponents but was shut out by MSHAA Class 6A Hernando. MUS fell to Montgomery Bell Academy for its first loss last week. MUS lineman Marcus Henderson along with Memphis defensive back commitment Devonte Nelson and Fairley running back Terry Wilkins are among the players to watch.

Thompson's pick: MUS 38, Fairley 21

DeSoto Central (3-1, 0-0 MHSAA 1-6A) at Olive Branch (2-2, 0-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

DeSoto Central is on a three-game win streak that includes wins over Germantown and Lake Cormorant. Olive Branch beat Germantown last week and Haywood County earlier this season. The Conquistadors have a pair of SEC commitments in Jevon Banks (Mississippi State) and Xavier Hill (Alabama). DeSoto Central has a three-star lineman in Kenyon McCou.

Thompson's pick: Olive Branch 24, DeSoto Central 17

Last week: 7-3

Season: 36-14 (.720)

One of the biggest differences in the sports is that there is no field prep/maintenance in basketball.   Our baseball is successful and play 30 games in the regular season as well. All of the teams dedicate A LOT of time in preparing for their next opponent.
    • Im pretty excited about the new rules that NFHS voted to adopt. Does anyone know if this will take place in Tennessee starting this year? I think I heard/read somewhere that the TSSAA bi-laws say they have to mirror what the NFHS does, and when the NFHS offered the current weight classes as options, TSSAA didn’t adopt them until NFHS made them official. Did NFHS make these changes official starting next season or will it be similar to the weight classes where TSSAA doesn’t change what they are doing until it is  an officially official part of the NFHS rule book? It’ll be interesting to see if it is rolled out for the new TSSAA Middle School season and I saw a post where the youth wrestling in TN was going to vote on adopting it as well.  I’ll pray for all the youth coaches that will have to shoulder the confusion from all those crazy #### parents who already think they know the rules more than everyone else  . Imagine the first time their kid is taken down and a 3 goes up on the scoreboard or their kid gets pinned with only one point of contact in the cylinder. Their heads might explode. i kid, I kid. Sort of. I’m surprised ride time was brought down with all the other changes. I know some argue that it promotes stalling on top, but its been an official scoring method in college forever, so I figure it must be doing something right. Do any of you think that’ll ever be implemented?
