This is Week 1 for both of these teams. Hillsboro’s returns their Sr QB and getting a new OC “Zach Mettenberger” LSU/Titans but lost there big time RB. PC is a senior heavy team lead by our QB. Also PC will have a new person calling defense this year. Who you got?

Zach Mettenberger:  calling offense with Hillsboro

vs

Tony Brunetti:  calling defense with Pearl-Cohn

This game was a SHOOTOUT last year at Tennessee State.  It looked like Hillsboro had the game all but won and then Pearl-Cohn rallied late.

This will be a great battle.  I'm thinking about riding over to PC next Friday night to watch the contest in person once again.  I'm glad Metro gets to play again.

It might be PC defense vs. Hillsboro offense, but know way Brunetti out coaches Mettenberger. Brunetti is a good coach and person but no way is he as good as Mettenburger.

There are 2 TSSAA Hall of Fame Head Football Coaches coaching in this game.  I wouldn't be so "quick" to cast judgement on either of them.  There aren't many coaches who can say that they've won 100+ games and guided 2 teams to the State Championship Game and both of these guys are on that short list.

Maurice Fitzgerald Coaching Resume

1989-2005 at Pearl-Cohn:  104-89

2015-2016 at Stratford:  18-5

2017-2019 at Hillsboro:  21-15

OVERALL RECORD:  143-109 (1996 & 1997 Class 4A State Championships)

Tony Brunetti Coaching Resume

2006-2019 at Pearl-Cohn/OVERALL:  123-58 (2015 Class 4A State Runner-Up; 2019 Class 3A State Runner-Up)

    • The Girls Basketball team I am a part of played for a gold ball this season. One of the biggest differences in the sports is that there is no field prep/maintenance in basketball.   Our baseball is successful and play 30 games in the regular season as well. All of the teams dedicate A LOT of time in preparing for their next opponent.
    • Im pretty excited about the new rules that NFHS voted to adopt. Does anyone know if this will take place in Tennessee starting this year? I think I heard/read somewhere that the TSSAA bi-laws say they have to mirror what the NFHS does, and when the NFHS offered the current weight classes as options, TSSAA didn’t adopt them until NFHS made them official. Did NFHS make these changes official starting next season or will it be similar to the weight classes where TSSAA doesn’t change what they are doing until it is  an officially official part of the NFHS rule book? It’ll be interesting to see if it is rolled out for the new TSSAA Middle School season and I saw a post where the youth wrestling in TN was going to vote on adopting it as well.  I’ll pray for all the youth coaches that will have to shoulder the confusion from all those crazy #### parents who already think they know the rules more than everyone else  . Imagine the first time their kid is taken down and a 3 goes up on the scoreboard or their kid gets pinned with only one point of contact in the cylinder. Their heads might explode. i kid, I kid. Sort of. I’m surprised ride time was brought down with all the other changes. I know some argue that it promotes stalling on top, but its been an official scoring method in college forever, so I figure it must be doing something right. Do any of you think that’ll ever be implemented?
    • I understand I guess it depends on the school you are with and the time you want to put in.  It’s evident of the schools that don’t put in as much times.  I would say basketball players put in as much time as any sport in our school system and this is coming from a football town.  Bball is a longer season than other sports.
