After the Covington game was cancelled vs. Dyer County last Friday, I caught the last part of the Haywood -SGC game on 95.3. From what I heard, the Haywood defense was “ bend but don’t break”. Apparently SGC moved the ball at times (from what I heard, mostly the QB around the ends). But, Haywood was able to keep them out of the end zone.

Here’s a piece of data for you. In this game last year, Covington fullback Eumorrion Flowers had a field day running up the middle. This year, Flowers has been moved to the defensive line and has not had a single carry at running back, as far as I recall. Do you think Coach Kirby might have a secret weapon there to use Friday night?

Flowers had a breakout game last year! I believe Kirby will have plays nobody has seen come Friday night. While Fayne at quarterback we have been getting yards on the outside and off tackle. If Haywood try to take that away I think we will be able to keep   Haywood honest running inside. I was also impressed with Fayne throwing it a little against Bolivar. I know it was not a great D but still impressed.

When will we see the Wing T again? It might not be a bad idea to switch it up some and give them a different look a time or two.

Thatd be interesting. South gibson’s success came on jet sweeps, and busted plays where the QB scrambled for his life. The dive was not a factor. I think south Gibson broke a dive up the guy once for about 20, after that it was non existent. If you want to watch the game you can on Facebook on the SGC hornet football page

Do you know how many yards SG had on the ground against you guys ?

Thanks!  I enjoy reading your posts.

This may be more than you wanted, but what the heck!  A lot of my info comes from personal experience as a former player and as a fan, Dr. Robert Rooks' "100 Years of Haywood Tomcat Football", the Alabama High School Football Database, and the Tennessee High School Football Historical Society.

Of the two internet sites that I use, I consider the Alabama High School Football Database  much more user friendly. Unfortunately, updates are no longer included for future research and the 2021 season for the state of Tennessee at that site. But for now, you can find historical data prior to 2021.

Haywood's team page
Covington's team page

You can find past as well as current records at the Tennessee High School Football Historical Society  (It's a good site, and you can find more information.  But, I don't consider it as easy to navigate as the AHSFHS site.)

 Haywood's team page
 Covington's team page

Haywood's 94 team finished the season 13-2 losing 7-10 to Collierville in the regular season, and to Cleveland 6-7 in the state championship game.
Haywood's 95 team finished the season 14-1 losing to Cleveland by a score of 3-14 in the state championship game.

I apologize for the broken link to the Alabama High School Football Database site.  I'm working on it.  I think I have it fixed now.

Go Tomcats!

Awesome info!!! I will definitely check out the links!  The AHFSHS is cool too !  I’ve scanned through it before.

I have a question for those that know the history of both Haywood and Covington. In 1971 Covington played in the semis as well as the Championship game. Haywood had a 8-3 record that year but no playoffs. They were both AAA. What is the reason for Haywood not playing in the playoffs? Did only the region champ make playoffs at that time?

The short answer is only 1 team from each quadrant made the playoffs at that time.  There was also a point system (which would require a more detailed explanation) involved.  Covington had the highest point total in our quadrant.

Both Haywood and Memphis Southside finished their seasons undefeated in 1969.  Haywood received fewer points because two of their victories were over AA Humboldt and AA Peabody (you received fewer points for wins over teams in a lower classification), so Southside (with more total points) made the playoffs while Haywood stayed home.

I can try to explain the point system later if you're interested.

Gotcha! Makes sense. Yea it would be cool to sit and talk high school football (Covington & Haywood).

I apologize to all the CoachT readers who are board with history chat!!  LOL

This is a more detailed explanation of the point system:

The playoff system started in 1969.  At that time teams were divided into 3 classifications.
AAA - schools that had more than 1000 students
AA - schools that had 500-999 students
A - schools that had less than 500 students.
Just like today, a team could choose to play up one classification.

Teams received:
10 points for a victory over a team equal to or above them in class
5 points for tying a higher class team or the same class team
4 points for a win over a lower class team
2 points for tying a lower class team
0 points for defeateing or tying  any team two classes below them

I remember the damage Flowers did, and I expect to see him have some playing time in the Charger backfield Friday night.

    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
    • I would not put too much stock into the UH over Eagleville. From what I understand they were pretty banged up in that tourney. Catcher was out, they were throwing pretty deep in their bullpen and a few key players were beat up in their infield. Sounds like they are pretty healthy heading into the district tournament. Look at their schedule, they played some really good teams.
