Korey Smith is 26 now (DL). James will figure prominently into Oakland's plans on offense

I went back to recheck the box score in the Maryville paper and it did have the name Korey Smith on a 15 yard touchdown to make it 49-7. The kid was wearing number 92 and I clearly remember the announcer saying he was a freshman and most likely didn't have enough jerseys and the freshmen had to take what was available that Oakland let dress out for that game. It was the last series Oakland ran in that contest in the 2020 game if you go back and watch any highlight file. The name could of been wrong in the box score because it could of been someone else's number. The moral of the whole question was that they said he was a freshman who ever it was and all I could think at the time we're screwed for good if a freshman is making us look that bad. I had a horrible off season wondering everyday has Oakland pulled so far out in front of every team in 6A that it will never be a contest anymore between the two of us. I know the head coaches father very good and I remember running into him at the barber shop and I told him remember the 1973 Kentucky Derby and how much Secretariat pulled away and won by a mile, well it's not that we aren't good or even the same but Oakland has pulled away from everyone. Both Maryville and Oakland pull in a couple of players from the outside off of the name, and tradition and kids want to be a part of that or lets say Agent Dad does. The big difference between the two are that Oakland is landing super talent that are going to the next level and Maryville is picking up players that can't even make the all county team. It seems every 3 or 4 years we get a surprise transfer that is a major help but I don't even go there anymore or even hope because it's a waste of time. I don't care what anyone out there say's but I believe George Quarles saw the future of the program with the on coming of Oakland and Ravenwood and a junior high program that was turning out 65 man teams go to 30 men over night and a lot of that had to do with the scaredy cat parents that won't let junior play football anymore could have a major impact on Maryville's future and went out with an unbelievable winning percentage no one will ever touch as to hang around and get watered down.

Summit’s coach was salty, don’t really know why, great performance by Oakland, Wade twins are fighters though

yeah what was up with summitt's coach?  he almost blew off the handshake.  I know losing is tough but it was a great effort against a great team.  summitt didn't quit when I thought the game was over.

Yeah, Smith was a Soph. starter on the defensive line. Definitely has the athleticism to play tailback but I think he'll stay on defense

I do think it's going to be a tall order for Oakland to beat Maryville next season given what the Rebels return. I think it will still be a pretty even series as long as Derek Hunt is there. While I think Maryville still has a incredible staff, losing 2 assistants like Gaylor and Ellis can't be understated

Congrats and much Respect to Oakland on a dominating Season . Everyone knew that Oakland was the favorite all year and Oakland stepped up and added CPA & LA to their schedule to make them even more battle tested . I was actually proud of Maryville for playing a much better game this year than last year's game against them . I'm not as pessimistic as some out there , I think Maryville isn't going anywhere and will once again be in the " Hunt " again next year . Under Coach Quarles we beat a lot of more talented teams over the years , but the difference with Oakland is the Coaching ... This Oakland team is not only Talented , they are very well coached . I'm glad we have Oakland out there now , sure we won't win as many Championships as we were but Oakland is only gonna make Maryville work even harder . Easy Championships are not the ones you remember ... the ones where you feel like you slayed a Dragon will be the ones you remember forever . Oakland slayed all the Dragons this year , can't wait to get another chance next year already !!

The best teams do not always win the championship, this year they did.

I want to say watching the games on TV and having been to the other venues for the Blue Cross Bowl over the years, including Vanderbilt, MTSU and TTU, I have to say that Finley Stadium in Chattanooga is the best venue for the Championship I have seen so far.  The location of the stadium and the looks of it were nicer than the others, I hope the TSSAA will continue to have football championships there.  A question, are they there for the next few years or are they to be rotated around the state?

    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
    • I would not put too much stock into the UH over Eagleville. From what I understand they were pretty banged up in that tourney. Catcher was out, they were throwing pretty deep in their bullpen and a few key players were beat up in their infield. Sounds like they are pretty healthy heading into the district tournament. Look at their schedule, they played some really good teams.
