Here is one problem I think UTC has.  On June 15th of last year the recruiting process opened up for my son.  He had over 30 Division 1 schools call him on the first day, in the first 3 months on the recruiting process he had 8-9 home visits and 4 more scheduled before he committed to VT. I certainly am not saying this to brag about my boy but to say that UTC wasn’t in the mix.  One of the coaches text Hunter once from UTC and that was it. No phone calls, no Offical visit request, just silence. At the time Hunter was ranked #10 for the class of 2023. A top recruit in my opinion but UTC didn’t make any effort to recruit him.

I said all of that to say this.  I don’t believe that UTC goes after the top recruits. I believe they get about 5 scholarships so they don’t have a lot of money to throw around, so they just aim a little lower. But dang you have to try to get the in state studs.

I am extremely grateful that TN has a D1 program and I like the coaches a lot just think they need to recruit a little more aggressively.

I know the App St coach wrestled with his brother. I think App St gets 6.5. It’s hard to go after the top recruits. You can’t put all your money into a few kids. I have been telling his brother that there are some really good kids in TN close to App St. App St coach is a great coach and person.

I going to weigh in on the Phillip Simpson debate.  If UTC were ever fortunate enough to convince Philip Simpson to become the head wrestling coach for the Mocs it would be a "MAJOR" pickup for both UTC and the entire state of Tennessee.  Philip not only has the wrestling skills and knowledge for folkstyle wrestling but let's not forget that he competed for the WCAP program and was a Pan American champion.  With regards to how he would handle the administrative duties, if I am correct he was assigned to be the right hand man for General David Petraeus during the war.  That 24/7 job alone tells you that he is a get it done type of man.  While everything that I have told you up to this point is great the best part is that Philip is truly a family man with a great personality.  You must have someone with an outgoing personality on the staff if you are ever going to recruit the very best athletes.  Now with all of this said "NO ONE" is going to be successful if they don't have the full allotment of 9.9 scholarships at their disposal.  The university is going to have to show that they are fully committed to having a successful program and up until this point all that they have done is provide lip service.

App state is another that never reached out.  Really baffles me but you will never get a top recruit if you don’t go after them. Heck from my military service Hunter would go to UTC for free without a scholarship.  If they tried really hard to get some of these guys you never know you might land a few.

what is 100% true. If you don’t try you will never get them.

I have to admit I wondered if either UTC or App State went after Hunter aggressively.  I don't have to wonder anymore.

Do you know if they tried for Kodiak?

On another note I really enjoyed UTC posting their matches up on youtube.  I think Palmer could get AA if stays hungry. While I know the championships didn't go the way he wanted he wrestled fantastic over the course of the year.

I gotta think the reasoning is a "there's no way we could ever land someone like Hunter" situation so they just don't even try. '

Even IF there was no way they could land him...you still gotta try. And like you said, had they actually found a way to get him to UTC they wouldnt have even had to use a scholarship on him. SMH. Dropped the ball on that one.

Sad!  When you don't try to recruit the top talent in your home state you have a major problem.  Yes, if the kid & family tell you not to recruit them I understand how you would back off.  Recruiting is a 24/7 job and if your are not making phone calls, texting, hosting camps, attending high school matches, sending emails, ect... you will not be successful.

Someone once told me that, "recruiting is like trying to get laid in the club. The more b****** you spit to, the greater the probability".

Wise man.

    • Winfree's senior year was the season she needed to secure more college interest. That opportunity was taken away from her. A lot of false assumptions can be made about what happened and what the options are. Unfortunately, the former coach and administration did not allow Winfree to have due process. A lawsuit was filed for a reason, and it will run its course by people who conduct discovery and take depositions. Unless the parties settle out of court, a lot of the pertinent issues will come to the public surface. I wrote about many of the issues here: https://bdnewsletter.news/2023/11/17/grounds-for-investigation-and-suspension/ I interviewed Winfree after she was dismissed from the team and wrote about it here: https://bdnewsletter.news/2023/12/01/a-new-interview-with-sable-winfree/ Winfree had been on teams in Warren County since the fourth grade and never been dismissed from a team. The real questions are why was Winfree dismissed from the team, and why the administration backed a coach whom they did not rehire.
    • What is the hold up here? I have not heard anything in weeks. Are they waiting for the right person or is something else going on?
    • Per usual, we'll be hard to beat in the regular season, I'm sure. It's the post season that I'm more worried about, specifically the coaches. Maybe they'll be able to make some adjustments that will keep the momentum in our favor. How's Grays recovery coming along?
    • Something don’t add up here a college coach is not going to turn away a good player they need just because they didn’t get along with their high school coach
    • RR, you might remember. Didn’t someone hide the kicking shoe that game? It seems I remember we had missed a kick the week before, and we needed all the points we could get. We thought we had a better chance going for two, so $?&@$ hid the shoe after the first miss that game. No one on our sideline looked for it very hard.
