Just curious.   What does the term “magnet” mean with schools?

A Magnet School is associated with a particular school district, but usually operates outside their normal zoning or transfer restrictions (if they have any). The original intent was to channel system wide students into a "higher learning" atmosphere, with usual zoning restrictions waived to allow for it. Dependent on the vision of the district, different curriculums apply at different schools...they may be geared more toward the sciences, arts, or basically anything chosen by the district.  If by chance anything other than academic aptitude (say football for example) should be an objective of the system, then I'd suppose that they'd be able to assemble an area wide team while zoning restrictions still applied to everyone else.

The short definition of a magnet is that it can mean whatever the school district wants it to mean.  The "academic" magnet schools that I am familiar with are nothing more than private schools that operate within the public school system.  The students are tested academically and must meet minimum academic standards to even be considered for admission.  Those same students must also not be considered "troublemakers" at their middle schools.  Now with all of that being said, just because a student has strong academics, and their conduct is deemed to be acceptable there is no guarantee that they will be accepted.  Most of the time the schools have a racial quota where they accept 25% white males, 25% white females, 25% minority males and 25% minority females.  The names of each student that is to be considered for admission is then placed into their racial category where a lottery is conducted, and they hope that their name is drawn.  In Davidson County (Nashville) there is a reason that Hume Fogg and Martin Luther King high schools are always ranked in the Top 100 public schools in the country.  I have said it before and will continue to say that no charter schools or magnet schools should be allowed to participate in Class A for athletics.  There is no tuition being charged at these schools and these schools are nothing more than private schools that operate within the various public-school systems throughout the State of Tennessee.

Spot on about the requirements and curriculum. Rutherford County has Central Magnet, in sports they are in Division I, 3A. If you wish to play a sport not offered, you play at Eagleville (county 2A).

Knox County - Austin East Magnet School - 3-8 record in 3A this season.  Where would you recommend they play?  Not sure how Magnet works in other counties, but the Magnet schools in Knox County are not really causing any issues with sports.
