Doesn't matter what offense you trot out there, the chances of beating Alcoa are next to none. Being run-oriented with a good defense allows a team to shorten a game while trying to keep their defense rested, giving them the best chance to be in it at the end. If teams wanted to get on Alcoa's level they need to start with playing legit 6A programs like they are.

That's facts. Notice the team who gave Alcoa the most trouble in State the past several years. Covington in 2018. Run heavy offense and a stout defense

Facts!! However, it solidifies my point, my Chargers did not win the Gold Ball!    The chances of Covington having equal talent as a team like Alcoa is slim to none, therefore, the typical Covington (Dburg) style of run heavy offense will not get them a gold ball.

I posted facts. You had to resort to posting speculation.

Listen, Covington is not a West Tennessee All-Star team. We recruit only those players who come out of our Middle School. You won’t see us in the finals every year, because when you play with home-grown talent, some teams are better than others. That’s why Covington High has played for the State Championship 6 times, but has never won in 6 tries.

What I can say is that history shows we will never back down or quit. There are hundreds of teams in our state who would love to be the runner-up for the state championship. We have been there 6 times.

I think BC knows all that which is why he has another team putting us out! LOL

Covington is the last team they want to play in the Championship!!

And YES!! Covington will play anyone!! Even the mighty dust devils.

Go Chargers!

Too bad Dyersburg and/or East Nashville going to cut the chargers season short again! :thumb:

Alcoa would have blown that average all to pieces the last 4 years!

As of now y'all are the kings of 3A, period, could be a big threat in 4A or even 5A! No argument from me! However, one day it will change. Just don't let some team catch you guys on a bad night in the playoffs! It may not end well. And if y'all do get knocked out of playoffs, no excuses. Just frown, say good game and move on!

I, on the other hand, would rather win the championship against you guys. To be the best you have to beat the best. Then there will be no speculation!!

And no i am not one of the "tornado haters" out there! Much respect here!! I will be pulling for y'all Friday night!! Show those New York boys how to play football!!!

Let's get back to the Covington-Dyersburg game. The Commercial Appeal has this prediction:

https://www.commercialappeal.com/story/sports/high-school/2023/08/30/tennessee-high-school-football-predictions-memphis-tssaa-germantown-houston/70682487007/

Covington (1-1) at Dyersburg (2-0)

When: 7 p.m., Friday

Covington’s Skylan Smith rushed for 258 yards with four touchdowns in a 35-27 win over Brighton in Week 2. Look for Smith to have another strong performance because just like last season, when he gets going, the team succeeds. The Chargers begin their pursuit for a second consecutive undefeated Region 7-3A record.

Wilcox’s pick: Covington 42, Dyersburg 35

I would bet my paycheck that he does not have 258 yards against Dyersburg and Covington is not scoring 42 points. Fact.

With both being run heavy offenses that score seems a little high to me. I know both are capable of taking one to the house on one play though. But still seems like a lot of points to me. Plus this prediction is not showing much respect for either defense. If i has to bet I’ll say one of these defenses will step up and stop a few of those drives. Which team , idk. Either way I’m sure you fans are in for a treat. I would think more of a 31-28 type game due to a few long sustained drives by one these teams.

My thoughts exactly! I would really expect to see a 17-14 game.

I posted the CA prediction, but it’s probably too high, as y’all have said. Last year’s scores (both games at Covington)

regular season Covington 34-0

playoffs Covington 24-10

I expect Dyersburg to do much better on their home field this season. Nothing I have seen leads me to believe these two defenses will give up a combined 77 points. I think if either team gets to 28 points they will clinch the win.

    • RR, you might remember. Didn’t someone hide the kicking shoe that game? It seems I remember we had missed a kick the week before, and we needed all the points we could get. We thought we had a better chance going for two, so $?&@$ hid the shoe after the first miss that game. No one on our sideline looked for it very hard.
    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
