Is Memphis the Best in Football?

It seems that Memphis has State Champions year in and year out. Last year it was Ridgeway, Briarcrest, and Bishop Bryne. I was just wondering what people thought about the idea that Memphis is the best football town from top to bottom. Besides these three teams, there is Germantown, Houston, CBHS, Melrose, East, etc. Let me know what you think.

Guest Oakland

rutherford co./williamson has produced the most consistent winners for the last 5-10 years and right now i would venture to say it is the best in football with teams such as oakland, riverdale, franklin, and brentwood

Well, Memphis football certainly is good. Briarcrest and Rideway winning state does put them up there. Bishop Byrne did little more than win a region.

The Nashville area certainly is the strongest. Starting in Sumner County with Gallatin and Hendersonville and then moving into Davidson County with MBA, Hillsboro, Ezell, CPA, Goodpasture, David Lipscomb ... into Williamson County with Brentwood, Brentwood Academy, Battle Ground Academy, recently Franklin... and Rutherford County with Riverdale, Blackman, and Oakland.

That's half of the state champions from last year... half of the runners-up from last year... one of the few 5A schools to go 10-0... an 11-2 5A school that had its only losses come to the 5A state champs.

Clearly the Nashville area is the strongest.

I would say on average with other regions Memphis schools produce more "marquee" D1-A and D1-AA caliber athletes year in and year out. That's noticeable.

But other regions consitently have better football TEAMS capable of going all the way, as the records clearly show.

College coaches and recruiters have long had the Memphis hotbed circled on their maps. It's no secret. And I hazard to say many recruiters will only look at the Memphis area and not consider checking anywhere else in the state. That's changing gradually -- Hillsboro had six 2002-2003 players sign D-1 and will probably have one more walk on at WKU later this month.

There is more talent in Memphis. But. The best teams are in the Nashville and Middle Tennessee area.

Brentwood Academy 9 state titles

MBA 4 out of the last 5 state titles in big private school division.

CPA 2 out of the last 3 state titles in 1A

Hillsboro state runner up the last 2 seasons in 4A.

Brentwood 5A state title in 2002

Riverdale the most dominant 5A team in the last 10 years

Oakland won 3 titles. most recent in 98 in 5A

Pearl Cohn 2 titles in the 90s. Always a good team

Ezell Harding won 1A title in 2001

Goodpasture won several 2A state titles

Lipscomb won a few 2A titles including 2002.

Gallatin won several state titles in the 80s and 90s

White House won 3Ain 97

Portland won 3A in 2000,runner up in 94,99

Trousdale County dominated 1A football in the 90s. won titles in the 70s also.

Lincoln County won 3 titles

BGA won several titles

DCA won a few titles

Other teams in Middle Tennessee that have good programs are Tullahoma,Franklin,Nashville Overton,Page,Hendersonville,Columbia.

Hopefully Centennial can become a strong team.

I am a East Tennessee fan but I will admit that Middle Tennessee plays the best football.

Middle TN has better football.

They also have a bigger population than Shelby Co when you start talking about Williamson, Davidson, etc.

The Franklin and Brentwood areas really help strengthen Middle TN's argument.

1A and 2A can't really add in to this mix since Memphis has no 1A teams and I think they only have a few 2A programs, I could be wrong about that though (Mitchell went to state last year).

OK then just use Davidson and Williamson counties... that's probably pretty close to Shelby County. Hillsboro, Pearl Cohn (failed to mention them earlier), MBA, David Lipscomb, CPA, Brentwood Academy, Brentwood, Franklin, and BGA.

That's still four state champions and three runners up.
