Double elimination may be the way to go. That is probably what we will do. On seeding it would be D1 1st vs D2 4th, D1 3rd vs D2 2nd, D1 2nd vs D2 3rd and D1 4th vs D2 1st. All of the bleachers will be out and we will probably bring in some potable bleachers as well. I plan on giving out the invitations at the end of the state tournament. The invitation will ask that all competitors contact me by Wednesday of the next week as to whether they plan on attending. After Wednesday we will know if we have enough competitors to make it a worthwhile event. The success of this thing, as stated earlier, depends wholly on the kids wanting to do it. I believe that it would be great for our sport to have something like this. Once I know that the tournament will happen I will personally make contact with as many college programs as possible so that they might have the chance to have someone here for recruiting purposes. I am open to suggestions and I believe that the double elimination is a great one. Thank you.

Coach Masters,

Do you have the DI and DII coaches on board yet? I think this tournament would get off the ground much faster if you had the endorsement of the coaches. Wrestlers would be more likely to want to attend if their coach supported the concept. Have you contacted some of the leading coaches (Logsdon, Connell, Morgan, Henry, Hill, Miller, Simpson, Simpson to name a few) to see about the viability of the event?

This is a great idea. I have been saying we need to do something like this for years. I think it would be nice to take the numbers ones from D1 and do a team dual with the number ones from D2. I now when I went to State many years ago before they split D1 and D2 there was no question on who the best in a weight class was. This is a good way to bring resolution to that question now that we have 2 divisions.

Great idea. I just don't think it will fly. I am a wrestling purist through and through. I am not crazy about split divisions, but I have learned to live with them. My question is why do we feel we have to figure out who the true champion is? Why can't division champions be left in peace without having to justify their championship to everyone else? In Basketball, Football, Baseball, Soccer, Volleyball, Softball, Tennis. etc. they don't match up champions and have no desire to. In Golf, Cross Country and Track and Field I guess there are some who compare scores and times. So what.

Coach,

I think some of it has to do with exactly what you stated. There are divisions now that were not there before. In the past a state champion was undisputed. Becasue we remember the history of the former way of doing things, we would like to be able to say, "he wrestled them all and came out the champ".

The other thing is that true competitors want to measure themselves with the best. I may be wrong here, but as an example, I was impressed that the wrestler from CBHS, he moved up a class to wrestler last years state champ from Bradley in the Cleveland Duals. I think it was Marable vs. Gibson at 160. That is what wrestling is about to me. He wanted to measure himself with another wrestler and was willing to go up to get that chance. Very impressive.

That is my answer to you last statement or question of "so what".

    • And can you tell me who those two quarterbacks were, and every kid that was put into college from Bearden is a Bearden kid? It’s kind of why they graduated from Bearden.   and I would definitely not consider ETSU “waste”…
    • Most of this is complete gibberish. But the one part I could decipher is putting kids in college. This coaching staff hasn’t put a single Bearden kid in college. They completed wasted one of the best WRs in East TN and have ruined two talented QBs. All because they’re in over their heads.
    • Well, I’d hope the new coaching staff thinks they are all that because they can always walk around the school, anytime they want, thinking that, especially for what they’ve done for the student athletes and the players, putting more kids in college in his first season than the old coaching staff did in numerous years combined, but we will just sweep over that because I know you don’t like facts. But trust me, nobody wanted Mr. Big britches, made the star player switch to quarterback, which is ultimately the reason he ended up transferring to play the position. He loved, but unfortunately, had to be at another school because Mr. Big Britches doesn’t like when a teenager knows more than him, but can’t expect much coming from a guy who used all class throwing pencils up into the ceiling and making fun of football kids who were failing class right to their face, and in front of numerous students, even projecting on the board most of the time.
