True State Champion Tournament

Kenwood will attempt to host a tournament on Saturday, February 28, 2004. The intent of the tournament is to get the best of the best from the state of Tennessee on one mat. We will invite the top 4 finishers in each weight class from both division 1 and division 2. This will result in an 8 man bracket and it will be single elimination. Success of the tournament will depend on how it is received by the state champions in each weight class. If all of the state champions accept our invitation we believe the tournament will be a huge success. We will run it under the AAU umbrella. Each weight class will have a 5 lb allowance. ie 103 will be 108. We are in the process of working out all of the details. Anyone with suggestions or comments is urged to post them. All of the kids who participate will do so as individuals, unattached from team affiliations. We do however hope that the coaches of these wrestlers will choose to come and participate. More details will follow.

Many of the finalists will be preparing for senior nationals anyway and this would provide a great opportunity to practice and stay sharp.

My concern would be for the multi-sport athletes. Not that they themselves would decline the invitation, but administrations of schools backing up the track, baseball, and soccer coaches (I didn't mean to slight the tennis players) not wanting them to risk injury for fear of not having them in the spring.

If there is a way to deal with that - you may have something.

Sounds like an awesome idea and I am all for it! I think there will be some, of course, who will not want to challenge for fear that they will then not be "the best"! They would just rather go down in history as the "best" without further competition. It will definitely be interesting to see who shows up. Good luck in arranging this.

Outside of injury,,, I see no other reason for the champions "NOT" to prove who is really the number one wrestler in the state... Unless the champion of either division feels insecure and/or that this is a big risk they can't/won't face.

This would be exciting, no doubt, and add more luster to the champion of Tennessee in each weight class,,, instead of the big multi-ringed circus we normally have, EVEN during the finals. (I miss the big match ups we once had and now with Soddy, Bradley, Franklin and Clarksville, private and public is more interesting than ever in the past 25 years)

By the way, why don't we all reveal who each of us are? Are there some us even feeling insecure or afraid to back our positions?

i'm there. a concern, how do you handle seeding? blind draw? no, you might get the gold medalists getting it on too early. how about d1 gold medalist vs. d2 fourth place finisher? wait, you couldn't do it that way because it would be like giving them a first round bye. well i'm sure it will get figured out but it will be something to watch.

    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
    • An FYI: To see how an opponent has done against another opponent since 2001- go to the game by clicking on one of the teams. Click the G beside the game. For example, Milan: The info will show you the previous matchups and other info.
    • All these college signees went yo other schools for 3 years, were getting college offers then transferred to Bearden. It’s not like this staff did much to develop them.    The BBall coaches son and the Seymour transfer were some of the most talented QBs in the region, and you guys developed them into QBs who might complete one pass a game.
