I noticed at 119 they changed the brackets. If Head-to-Head is the first criteria, how is Simpson seeded over Geismar. Last time they wrestled, besides the Duals, Geimar beat Simpson. I know that Simpson beat Geismar in the Duals but it is my understanding that the Duals don't count. Does anyone know for sure how this works. If this stands at 119, it looks like some others would have to change as well.

What appears to have happened is that the seedings based on medals only were (1) Simpson, (2) Geismar. Then Young jumps in ahead of Geismar on the basis of their head-to-head; Young has no meetings with Simpson and Geismar is more than one slot below, so no challenge for the #1 seed is possible. Either that, or they do count State Duals (and why shouldn't they?)

The seedings first look at last years placers. Geismar beat Simpson in the semis last year and he then lost to Hiller in the finals taking second, Simpson took third. Therefore Geismar would be #1 seed and Simpson #2. However, Young from McCallie defeated Geismar in their last meeting this year. By the rules and guidelines of seeding that the TSSAA themselves have laid out, Young should then jump ahead of Geismar to the #1 seed with Geismar at #2 and Simpson at #3. Even though that might not seem fair it is clearly and has been clearly the rule for the last 4 or 5 years. What we have here is a case of either Frank Simpson or Jim Morgan calling up Ronnie Carter and complaining until he got his way. The way they originally had it seeded was the correct order. And R.C. and the TSSAA are contradicting themseleves and their guidlines of seeding by doing this. It is pretty sad and unfair, and they know that they need to change it back.

walkenvol, IMHO the transfer rule had nothing to do with this particular situation. Thanks for sharing your feelings on the TSSAA transfer rule anyway.

Certainly the transfer rules are not the sole culprit but they are part of the problem. Walkenvol is right. We need to encourage participation in athletics. It is better for our kids. Many transfer decisions, this being one, have nothing to do with wrestling. Is any one better off because of these rules?

I was also wondering if anyone notices how the two top DII 112's from the West have to wrestle each other in the first round and then the winner gets Whitt Dunning in the second round. I know it is a blind draw but man that is just a tough way for these two competitors to start out.

Yea, that's no good. It's too bad that Baucke is a freshman. Hopefully they will be wrestling for 3rd and 4th.

Which McCallie wrestler would have the best chance to beat Marable this time around, Scott or Manley?

Leave it to Tex to ask the tough questions. Maybe a McCallie parent can give us some info on how these two do at practice. Does anyone know the score of Manley's match with Ty Cody earlier this year?

How are they supposed to seed the DII wrestlers?  Is there any rules written on tssaa.com?

These are the guidlines directly from the Wrestling Handbook at TSSAA.org.

Section V E. Wrestlers who meet the qualification shall be placed in each weight division in the state tournament. The criteria for placing shall be as follows:

1. Head-to-Head Competition during the regular season.

(a)If two oppenents have wrestled each other, the wrestler with more wins against the other will be the higher seed.

(b)If two opponents have the same number of wins against each other, the wrestler with the most recent win will be the higher seed. (Young defeated Geismar last)

2.Returning state champion from the previous year. In the case that more than one state champion is in the same weight class, the wrestler from the higher weightclass will be the higher seed. (Irrelevant here except...)

3.Follow the same procedure as #2 for 2nd place from previous year, 3rd place,...

This is where Simpson finally draws his 3rd seed. The previous year he placed third and Geismar placed 2nd. So Geismar is seeded above him. Then look at the FIRST criteria, Young and Geismar split matches this season with Young winning their most recent bout.

The Correct Seeding would definitely no arguements about it be:

1.Young

2.Geismar

3.Simpson

The reasoning given on the TSSAA website for the change in the 119 bracket is that "Young defeated Geismar in head-to-head, but that he has not wrestled Simpson yet." That rule is not found anywhere in their very own guidlines for seeding. That does an injustice to Geismar (but he probably doesn't want it to change back) who rightfully held a higher seed than Simpson by seeding someone over him who he earned (according to the TSSAA's very own guidleines!!) a higher seed than. The point is they ARE MAKING UP RULES AS THEY GO. They need to change it back before this thing blows up in their face. Because there are countless other examples of this order of seeding in the past 4 or 5 years.
