Game times were moved up due to USJ's football playoff game.

Gibson County is coming off a 34-1 season and having to replace their starting guards and power forward. USJ is coming off a 30-5 season and have all major players back.

It was a tight game for two quarters. Tied after one quarter at 11-11. The game was tied at 23 just before halftime and Gibson County started what would be a 23-0 run into the second half. Halftime GC 27-23. Gibson County outscored USJ 26-1 in the third to take a commanding 53-24 lead before winning 70-32.

Kaitlin Dudley was held scoreless in the 1st, but exploded in the 2nd and 3rd for 25 of her 30 points. Camille Coleman took up the slack in the 1st scoring 6 of GC's 11. USJ had trouble adjusting to the fullcourt pressure late in the 2nd quarter and throughout the 3rd quarter. The Lady Bruins' talented senior center Courtney Alvey was held to just 5 points and 12 rebounds. If it wasn't for Katie Brush's 13 points, it would have been worse. I asked GC head coach David Russell to grade his team's performance and he said it would was somewhere in the B range. But he added that the 3rd quarter was an A performance. The Lady Pioneers - once Rachel Osbourne is able to play - will have 25 fouls to give in the post.

Heather Scruggs did a good job of running the offense and played a good game on defense as well. Shana Hurley had a good defensive game as did Cicily Johnston. Shanice McElrath picked up some early fouls and was not able to get very many minutes, but did finish with 8 points and 3 rebounds. Jenilee Pate came off the bench as a backup to McElrath. Pate had some big rebounds in the 1st half.

Keep in mind that only one senior starts - Scruggs...so it is a young team.

Should be two pretty good games. Jackson County vs Dyersburg may be a thriller.

Why is Rachel Osborne not playing? She had improved a lot by the end of last year. I expect that she got a lot better over the summer.

She was not dressed out during the jamboree Saturday night and I'm guessing she's injured. I didn't have the chance to ask David Russell about her status. But, you're right she improved quite a bit last season and will be very important for the Lady Pioneers this season if she's able to play.

Gibson Co. seems to be back to the same ol same ol. I heard that they wouldn't be that good this year. Seems like I was wrong. Considering how they played against USJ, how do you think they'll stack up against Livingston Academy?
