If you had to win one game!

Recommended Posts

I have been thinking about this alot, and my question is, if you had to win one game, who would you start and why?

In thinking about this, I have thought about so many pitchers, that it is hard to decide. Curt Schilling, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, Johan Santana, Mike Mussina, Roger Clemens, Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, Kerry Wood, Mark Prior, Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder, Barry Zito, Roy Oswalt, Andy Pettitte, Jason Schmit, and John Smoltz to name a few and after thinking about it, I decided that I would have to start:

Curt Schilling, for one reason and one reason only, he has proved that he can pitch the big game!

Who do you pitch?

The best of all time Gibson. Currently I concur with Schilling. There are a lot of top notch guys out there, but none want to be the guy and seem to thrive and pitch better in these spots more than Schilling. Smoltz was like this in his days as a starter, and now he may start again--be interesting to see what hew still has as a SP.

You guys are too young,  No One was as good as Gibson.  There was never a doubt Gibson was going to win.  The only one he ever lost was against Detroit when multi gold glover, the late great Curt Flood misplayed a ball that went over his head for a triple, and Micky Loloch shut down the redbirds in 68.

When Gibson played, he didnt face lineups like pitchers face today!

When Gibson pitched every team had a legitimate Hall Of Famer in the lineup! The Giants had McCovey and Mays, the Reds had Robinson, Rose, Perez and Pinson, the Cubs had Banks, Williams and Santo, the Pirates had Clemente, Stargell and Mazeroski, the Braves had Aaron, Torre and Boyer, the Phillies had Allen and so on. There were less teams and the talent was more concentrated.

Yea, but did Gibson face a lineup like this and dominate them?

Cairo

Jeter

Rodriguez

Sheffield

Matsui

Williams

Posada

Olerud

Sierra

with Lofton and Clark coming off the bench? I dont think so! There are 5-6 HOF just in that lineup and 3-4 are prolly first ballot!

And not only did Schilling dominate them, he did it with a bad ankle!

    • We could sure use some math teachers country wide. Ever go into a store or restaurant and the bill comes to $9.97 and you give them a ten dollar bill and 2 pennies because you wanted a nickle back and then the meltdown starts and the next thing two more people have to come and help figure it out and the place comes to a complete halt. I see this everyday and it's a sad representation of all these schools allowing these kids out the door to get shortchanged the rest of their life.
    • I like the Pirates chances. I’ll be there as soon as work allows.
    • Stars, I heard we were searching far and wide for some math teachers. Any chance their kids bench press or 40 times are getting checked? LOL I’ve heard good things from 825.
    • I think it was expected. “Bad” luck I guess to get a couple difference maker QBs in the same class. I thought the decision was made a little early myself, but they were struggling offensively last year.  I assume the running quarterback alco had last year would be a senior this fall, and the transfer would start the following two years in addition to getting a ton of playing time this year. Maybe he waits two yrs, but I doubt it. The kid is good. So is the one who stayed.
    • I'm from Cloudland and we've never played a sectional game.  We need to win tomorrow night to avoid that bus ride.  Us and north greene can play with you guys so I'm expecting good games whoever the matchup is.
