  1. These players go to whichever team is winning at the moment . Fulton is in the same situation. These teams in West Knoxville are coming in promising these players things and then they give them a few minutes in one varsity game so when they try to transfer back to their zoned school they make it hard on them because they now how a varsity record. But the AE youth coaches are pushing AE High School in their youths head now adays. Most of the coaches whom are coaching the Youth programs are all former AE High School players and are volunteer high school coaches. With that said, the youth program is growing and hopefully, the high school program will do the same. AE will be back very soon.

  2. No. I watched them lose to Cocke Co. at the AJ Ladies Bank Classic. Upperman looks nothing like the teams they have had the last 3-4 years. Very young, didn’t shoot well at all from 3. Also, didn’t have a strong point guard like they normally do. They did appear to be very young and o am sure they will improve as the season goes on because they have a great Coach.

  3. Bob Polston passed away back in 2011. He had a two great assistant coaches in Joel Helton who went on to coach Knox Central for 27 years and Don Ward who took over after Bob retired after the 1978 season for 11 years and also was head coach at South Doyle 9 years.

  4. A school with an enrollment of less than 450 shouldn't ever beat a school with an enrollment of 3000 plus in anything. But it happened today. I know G-Dub is good. I saw them with my own eyes make 13 3's in a quarter last year against Twin Springs in the state tournament. But that's Twin Springs not Dorman.

  6. Noah may retire at Gleason. Or be there until it's closed & they combine with Dresden (the closest in county neighbor). Whichever comes first. But he definitely deserves a shot to coach a bigger program if he chooses to.

  7. Yea, you can tell you don't know much about Austin East nor its youth program. For the last 3-4 years, Austin East Youth programs has been running the city/county in all aspects. This past year, they finished no lower than 2nd in each division in the YAC and finished runner ups in the 8th grade MAC league losing to undefeated Farragut and Winning the 6th/7th grade division . The problem is keeping these players in the High School program. Yes, we're losing players to Knox West, Bearden, Powell, Catholic, etc.... However, like most of you said, "with the right coach, this will change!" That's why I'm saying this is an attractive job!

  8. Just had this discussion yesterday with an Alumni, but Yes there have been. Bob Poston was the football coach at AE 1968-1969 and went 16-2 as the coach of the Roadrunners. . Poston left after that to go to rival Rule High School

  13. It should be noted that Cleveland lost 3 varsity wrestlers due to illness, and at least 2 would have won their brackets with the 3rd finishing top 3. I don't know if other teams had similar luck, but that was obviously a factor for Cleveland's finish. That said, congratulations to McCallie for getting it done.

  14. With the right guy they can challenge Alcoa. Lots of athletes in the Austin East community. I remember too well how good they were during the Sam Anderson years.

  16. Watched McCallie and Baylor in the state championship game it was like watching two college teams playing compared to what I was used to watching in the Knoxville area! Big, fast and strong.

  17. Yes let's move the goal post for the grand number of TWO magnet schools that happened to be good at football and have only won a single state title bewteen them in the last 25 years. Would you even care if either were 5-5 every year? Of course not, meanwhile Pearl and EN have to constantly fend off the alphabets from leeching off their talent, yet they thrive in spite of their disadvantages. We used to tell our kids to improvise, adapt, overcome. Now we just pat them on the back and tell them to blame someone else for their failings, take their ball and go home like your doing.

  18. Athletes, tradition, community involvement, and a dedicated Coach who has 100% backing from the School and Community, and half the kids eating plenty of biscuits and gravy will usually keep the fire out!

  20. I know Sunbright has a low enrollment to begin with, which obviously means quality and experienced depth will always be an issue... especially with O and D linemen. I think they run a single-wing type offense, which is exactly what you want to do to keep the clock running and make games "shorter". However, you have to an OL than can at least get you 3 yards per play to do this. If they can get you 3 to 3 1/2 yards per play, you keep scores low and even give yourself a chance to win... especially if the defense can at least make the opponent earn their TDs and, again, keep that clock running. From the looks of their scores, they struggled with both. I would imagine Sunbright's struggles begin with the very low enrollment. A good strength and speed program + continuing to keep things simple and master their jobs can help as the kids mature. But, it takes time and follow through... and that makes it tough in today's age of "I want it now". One plus at Sunbright is I believe it is a K-12 school. Get a "feeder" strength & speed program going in elementary and middle school and start developing those youngsters early on. Get your younger teams running the same schemes, yet modified for their age, as the varsity team is running. Lots of great benefits to working in a school where you can see and work with all the kids in the feeder levels each day. Rooting for the Blue and Yellow Tigers. Serious question: how in the world did they manage to beat Coalfield this season?
