Actually, I would think they would have to have a physical to step on the field ... that is a lawsuit waiting to happen. If I were a head coach, I wouldn't take that risk. So, regardless of other paperwork, a physical is something easy to get done and should be done. I would hate to see a kid come out there who had a heart condition/kidney problem/allergy/asthma and fall out in practice or a game.

The majority of the people coming up from Louisiana are going to Texas, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, and Arkansas. Then, the majority of the people that come here are going to go to larger cities like Memphis and Nashville and Chattanooga. Expect those teams to strengthen in the next couple years. And the biggest thing that will affect a lot of schools will be picking up many of these children and youth and facing reallignment in another year or so. I believe that will be the biggest impact overall ... school enrollment.

As far as talent goes .... if the talent is there ... play it. If a Freshman is better than a Junior ... play them. If a Junior is better than a Senior ... play them. The Bible says that if you got talent, use it, don't hide it. If you hide it, you lose it. So be smart on that one.

I don't think any of these kids will expect to jump right in to someone elses position. Right now they are broken souls. They need a place to fit in and find a connection. So I think we should give them a hardy welcome. I bet they work hard to learn to fit in and make a difference in their new "home". Just being apart of the team will be enough for a while. Later, when they learn, work hard, earn playing time...we'll see what happens. Give the coaches credit for doing what they do. :thumb:

I agree with fieldgoal1. The students should be required to have a physical on hand for the coach. The coach has to carry physicals for all his players. That is a requirement for making the team. It is incase of injury and is necessary if the student in injured and must be taken to the hospital.

Thank you for this post...out of the many on this thread...it's one of the few that makes sense (along with Coach T's)...

These kids need a haven...and some are finding it on the football field...some are finding it in the band room...some are finding it in the classroom...

I'm proud of the welcome that the community of Smith County is giving to our new residents...

I'm proud of the welcome the coaches, band directors and teachers are giving to these kids left with nothing...they are giving hope and faith that tomorrow will be a better day...

The way I try and look at it is this. The "move in's" didn't want to move there probably, they had no choice. They are kids also who have been busting their tails for four years also. Would it be fair not to play them just because they had to move there. I think if you have a kid move in, let them practice and learn the system and if they are ready to play, let them play. Once again, it isn't their fault they are there in the first place, all the kids just want to play ball, let them.

While I have the greatest sympathy for the victims of Katrina, I hear the buzz about "great players" coming to "our school" and how they will be awesome!

But I have to ask the question, what happens when that displaced player bumps a 4th year senior from his hard earned starting position?

Just a another in a long list of reasons why I would never be a high school coach!

There is supposed to be around 350 arriving in Tullahoma Tuesday to be housed at the national guard barracks. I don't know how this will affect Tullahoma High School. There are so many unknowns and uncetainties regarding this situation. We definitely should help these people anyway we can under the law. I think we would certainly get their help if the situation was reversed. If athletes are involved, and they can win a position on a team, then they should be able to play. It would be a tough choice for coaches to make, but that's the reason they make the big bucks. HaHa  I would think most of these people will go home, if and when they get the chance. There's no place like home. Hillsboro had six refugees on their team Friday nite at Tullahoma, with three of them dressed out. I don't know if anyone of them played. God bless these people.

There are/were approximately 200 Catholic private schools in New Orleans. If there is any mass movement to schools I would think it would be in the private Catholic schools. I don't think that would be planned in advance or happen on short notice but Catholics who move to certain areas are going to look for Catholic schools. Whether or not they can afford that at this point in their lives is an unknown. This may be a more realistic possibility in the 2006-07 school year when communication lines, etc, have been re-established.
