Are teams like BGA or Ensworth going to be added to this group of 7?

Per the TSSAA:

Classification Changes for 2007-2008 and 2008-2009

St. Benedict and Pope John Paul II have been moved from AA to AAA in football and Ensworth will begin playing football with the 2007-2008 playoff series. Rossville Christian Academy is a new school and will be in Class A. This situation in Division II is much different, because of the small numbers in Division II. The movement of Pope John Paul II and St. Benedict create 10 schools in Class AAA, five schools in Class AA, and 11 schools in Class A. The Division II Committee has met and reviewed these changes and what will take place in Division II. The Division II Committee will meet on August 2, 2006 to look at this situation and will make a recommendation to the Board of Control for changes that would occur in Division II at its August meeting.

I also would expect Ensworth to play in AAA, even if enrollment dictates a AA classification.

I hate to be harsh, but St. Benedict and Pope John Paul are gonna find themselves in a really tough situation if they play in D2-AAA. And if Ensworth comes there too, that will really throw Middle TN D2-AAA off with 5 teams in the Super '11' all in the same area.

But it should be fun, nonetheless. Kinda leaves Knoxville Webb and ECS going for the D2-AA championship every year, though.

BA, MBA, and Ryan would absolutely love having more opponents within a football's throw, especially since early indications point to Ensworth and JPII being strong contenders in the future. It will be fun when the MBA-Ensworth and Ryan-JPII rivalries count in the standings.

Speaking of rivalries--I wrote this on the other board--if the only alternative is the current d2-aaa system, I would prefer that there be no play-offs and that there be a season ending Thanksgiving Day bowl game. This is how a lot of prep school football is managed in the Northeast. I attended a Thanksgiving Day game with some friends last year and I was floored. The crowd and atmosphere were amazing; it seemed like everyone who had ever attended the school was at the game. It felt like the old Harvard-Yale games when alumni from all over came in by train. Just an amazing fall tradition that really embodies what football is all about.

Sorry to take the thread another direction, but could you imagine a Thanksgiving Day line-up of:

--MBA vs. BA

--FRHS vs. JPII

--Baylor vs. McCallie

--MUS vs. CBHS

would you be in favor of something like that? Can you imagine the atmosphere on your campus for a game like that on Thanksgiving Day?

That would be a kick...but isn't that about 3-4 weeks into the playoffs?

You have to understand that the East Coast prep schools don't start their football season until after Labor Day which is about 3 weeks later than we start football here in Tennessee. It would be great to play the games on Thanksgiving Day for several reasons:

1. The weather is still fairly warm most of the time.

2. college students are home and can attend the game

3. families are home visiting for the holiday

All of this would add up to big crowds and a great atmosphere.

With state football tradition so firmly grounded in playing for state titles, folks would never be able to stomach ending their year in a bowl game. It would be a festive, unique way to conclude the season, but it will never happen. Would I attend a Thanksgiving bowl game between my alma mater and a rival private school? I sure would. But I'd rather see my team in the state title game.

Here's an interesting concept that will never work because the TSSAA has given every indication it isn't interested: after each classification's season and playoffs are over, play bowl games between the top two finishers in each division. The matchups could go something like this:

5A champ vs. D2-3A champ

5A runner-up vs. 4A runner-up

4A champ vs. 3A champ

3A runner-up vs. D2-3A runner-up

2A champ vs. D2-2A champ

2A runner-up vs. 1A runner-up

1A champ vs. D2-1A champ

D2-2A runner-up vs. D2-1A runner-up

A very preliminary sketch, mind you. While still not finding a conclusive state champion, these bowl games would pit comparable teams against each other and would reward teams for their stellar seasons, regardless of their classification. I would definitely drive as far as I needed to in order to see any one of these games.

    • No reasonable lawyer would take up this case. I am not a lawyer, but I know school law in and out.  Similar situations just like this play out thousands of times each year across the country, even at the college level (i.e. Ole Miss)  The Plaintiff's never win...ever.  If I am wrong, please provide a legal precedent for me. • Yes Justin Cruse was named head coach
    • It used to be, I think it still is, a change of 20% +/- gives reason to reclassify. Schools can choose to play up classifications but not down. Here is the mid cycle reclassification info on TSSAA.org When Memphis East changed from a regular public school to an "all-optional" school in 2017 the would've dropped to A but chose to stay in AAA in basketball (baseball, and softball) Penny was still coaching there and with the players they had they would've beaten A teams by 40 and slept walked to the championship. Other Memphis schools stayed in their classifications (mostly in basketball) until the next reclassification cycle. Of course this is the same time that a 4th class was added basketball.
