Hands down Coach Walt Smith at Mt. Pleasant. Took over a 0-10 team from 2002 and made a state powerhouse. Everybody said it was the talent. MP has lost 30+ seniors the last two years and he is still dominating region 6. He has been to the quarterfinals two years in a row. Dont forget this is just three years removed from a 0-10 season. He took a huge gamble and made the best running back in 1A from 2005 and made him a QB in 2006. MP has dominated region 6 with Marco at QB. He has rushed for over 200 yards in all 4 games going over 300 in one. Great job Coach Smith. Keep up the hard work.

It's hard to tell who has a good coach at the high school level. However, bad ones stick out like a sore thumb. Take Giles County's incredible turnaround for example. For years, Giles had good athletes with no direction. Now, they get a coach and they're winning. Everyone's waiting for the other shoe to drop, but right now they are undefeated. Is this because the new coach is good or is it because the old ones were bad? Probably about 20%-new coach good vs. 80%-old coaches bad.

Certain coaches get heralded for being good, even when they have a couple of 6-4 seasons. The coaching style didn't change during those years, nor did the play calling. What changed? Why, the players, of course. Bring Rankin or Satterfield down to Houston County or Adamsville and see how many region championships they win, much less State Championships. Now, before anyone gets all defensive, I'm not dogging Houston County, Adamville, or these two fine coaches. I'm just stating the obvious. It doesn't matter if you're Jeff Gordon...if you're driving an army jeep and a one-eyed midget is driving a Corvette, the midget is going to win every time.

Giles County is 3 A :thumb:

There are a lot of good coaches out there, but it still boils down to having talented players who know and buy into the system. Take coach Adkins at JBS for example he is a good coach and has been since the beginning, and he had some good teams in the 90s, but didn't reach near the level of sucess last years team had or that this team could possible have. I think some of that goes back to the fact that kids now are playing football in both a Jr pro and Jr high level and now when these coaches get them they are not quite as raw or unknowledgable as they used to be. So know a good coach like Adkins can shine because all he has to do is fine tune there game not build it from scratch.
