Maryville didn't warn OR to wear helmets in press box

I don't personally don't know Mr. Meadows but I do know I hated making the decision to write this little story. I thought about it and thought about it, but in the end, did publish it.

I don't know if a ban that severe is warranted, but he does sound very emotionally-involved and something should be done. I just hope it all goes OK and everyone learns and grows from it.

I want to add, I was treated like a real champ over at William Blount and enjoyed myself, except of course for the outcome for the Wildcats. Everyone was classy and the administrators seemed to do a very good job. And as for those Blount County officials I had heard so many bad things about, perhaps they had a good night ... but I thought the game was called very well.

I'm sure most WB fans will understand your decision to write the story, I know I do. You did a great job in the way it was written, it was very unbiased and classy.

I will also say that all of the Wildcat fans were the best visitors you could ask for. Everyone that I saw was very respectful and classy, just like the Oak Ridge program. I hope the man that was injured is doing well..... a very unfortunate situation for everyone.

I doubt very few Blount countians are surprised by this story. Things have been going on at WB for years. I could fill a couple of pages on just the events that have been advertised.....who knows what hasn't been brought to light. Unfortunatly it will most likely take somebody losing life or limb before action is taken. I hope not!

Several school systems have banned parents for cussing at coaches during games and cannot come onto that School systems property anywhere for a year.

Send his butt to the house for a year.

I do feel that he should be banned from TSSAA events involving WB for the year. If he gets mad over someone making that kind of minor comment imagine what would happen in other circumstances.

I pity you if you really believe that.

Don't pity me for being afraid for the kids and opposing fans that compete against WB. The WB adminstrations needs to do something about these happenings before something very serious happens.

Let me use Maryville as an example......many WB fans have a strong hatred for anything Maryville. Did you see the threats that were raining from the WB stands when Tyler Burstrum was hurt? It wasn't pretty...let me assure you that. All it takes is one person to act on the threats that were being made.

I pity your ignorance. You make it sound like the fans at WB carry around weapons assaulting opposing fans and players. Happenings, you say. I would certainly love to hear you elaborate. This was one incident, and it was anything but major. What do you think is going to happen? Are we going to yell someone to death?

Wow. Okay, sorry nice and admirable WB fans, but your program in general is pretty rude this year.

I don't think that's an accurate assessment. This was an unfortunate incident, but, this was one man in a press box. There will always be a few fans of a program that aren't the best, but, should you really group a whole school and program based on the actions of a very small few?

This is a copy of an article in today's Oak Ridger by Tank on the incident at the WB/OR game.

By: Tank Johnson | The Oak Ridger

The battle between the Wildcats and Governors wasn’t the only altercation that took place at William Blount Friday night.

During halftime, the word started spreading down to the sidelines about a little scuffle that involved the Oak Ridge radio broadcast team and the team videographer for William Blount.

While stories, as they often do, seemed to vary, the basics were that Wildcat color man Scott Monger and the film man had a dispute that involved the police and the William Blount official being escorted from the stadium.

The man, who has been identified as the father of William Blount head coach Scott Meadows, disagreed with Monger and said “it was just a good football play.”

Monger and Clary continued talking about the play a little on the air, when Monger was instructed to “shut up” by the gentleman. Monger told him he had every right to express his opinion, but was instructed by the William Blount man that he did not have that right in the Governor press box.

After another exchange, in a mature manner by Monger, the William Blount man struck Monger in the side of the head, causing bleeding from Monger’s ear.

I guess the right for the O.R. radio man to "express his opinion" must have been banned from the Holden Lail Press Box. :thumb:

I can't wait to read a rebuttal in the Letters to the Editor section of the Mairvul Misprint from the W.B. folk.

Maybe Gov-Man can shed some light on this incident.

TG,

Get those rose colored glasses off and look at the situation of this topic. If this has happened before, which is what is being reported, and then what keeps it from escalating? Is next time a fist not enough and a knife or gun is the weapon? I think the comments you refer to are legitimate concerns by others. Crowd control is a tough task and a crowd getting out of control is an easy road to traverse if not taken seriously. I would be surprised if criminal charges aren't filed soon. I can't wait for a rebuttal in the Maryville paper.

He is one classy guy and a pilar of stone not to respond in kind during the event. Maybe he will just turn his Dad loose on the guy. Ha Ha...Just Kidding. Any word from TSSAA or WB on actions?

Ole Dad

I am about 99 percent sure that no criminal charges will be filed. I could be wrong, but the bleeding-ear victim is pretty dang classy and I don't see it happening.

This incident was perpetrated by ONE individual. It was inexcuseable. The perpetrator was first confronted by the person in charge of the pressbox and told to calm down ... at the time, the pressbox coordinator didn't realize it was anything more than a verbal exchange.

Mr. Monger decided to report the incident ... the right decision. Trust me, had he not done it, the pressbox coordinator was going to as soon as half-time arrived. As soon as it became clear what had happened, William Blount administrators (lead by head principal) and Blount County Police officers dealt swiftly and properly with Mr. Meadows.

It will be interesting to see what (if any) actions will be taken concerning Mr. Meadows for the rest of the season. He was involved in a prior incident at the Maryville game.

We have had our share on "incidents" at William Blount. But there are a lot of good, classy things that go on each week at ballgames as well ... unfortunately, those never get reported. If I was so inclined, I could list "incidents" that I have witnessed (or heard about) at every school we've played so far this year. IT IS NOT JUST WILLIAM BLOUNT. Unfortunately, you get "the monkey on your back" and it's hard to get it off

This happened in the press box. To the best of my knowledge, out in the bleachers, where the fans were, I didn't hear of anything bad happening. It was a good, exciting football game ... a milestone victory for WB ... and a very classy display by the OR players and fans in defeat.

ML ... didn't think I'd forget you, did you? I fully agree with you that WB administration needs to be on top of things ... I believe in this situation, they were. I can share, if you'd like, about ME (along with some other folks) personally being being confronted, cursed, and threatened by some Maryville fans at the conclusion

of the '99 game. Should I lump you all together and condemn the whole Maryville community for that? I happen to believe it was just a small group of classless people, disappointed that they lost, feeling like the referees "robbed" them, who saw someone in blue and orange and decided to take it out on them. If you can name more incidents involving WB folks, a big part of has to do with "losing a lot more games." Doesn't excuse it, or justify it ... but does explain why "our whole community" is getting a bad blanket tossed over it based on the actions of a few, random individuals.

Opposing fans, I assure you ... you can still come to WB--and to the beautiful Mike White field without "fearing for your life." Just stay out of the pressbox ! :D
