Maryville didn't warn OR to wear helmets in press box

This incident was perpetrated by ONE individual. It was inexcuseable. The perpetrator was first confronted by the person in charge of the pressbox and told to calm down ... at the time, the pressbox coordinator didn't realize it was anything more than a verbal exchange.

Mr. Monger decided to report the incident ... the right decision. Trust me, had he not done it, the pressbox coordinator was going to as soon as half-time arrived. As soon as it became clear what had happened, William Blount administrators (lead by head principal) and Blount County Police officers dealt swiftly and properly with Mr. Meadows.

It will be interesting to see what (if any) actions will be taken concerning Mr. Meadows for the rest of the season. He was involved in a prior incident at the Maryville game.

We have had our share on "incidents" at William Blount. But there are a lot of good, classy things that go on each week at ballgames as well ... unfortunately, those never get reported. If I was so inclined, I could list "incidents" that I have witnessed (or heard about) at every school we've played so far this year. IT IS NOT JUST WILLIAM BLOUNT. Unfortunately, you get "the monkey on your back" and it's hard to get it off

This happened in the press box. To the best of my knowledge, out in the bleachers, where the fans were, I didn't hear of anything bad happening. It was a good, exciting football game ... a milestone victory for WB ... and a very classy display by the OR players and fans in defeat.

ML ... didn't think I'd forget you, did you? I fully agree with you that WB administration needs to be on top of things ... I believe in this situation, they were. I can share, if you'd like, about ME (along with some other folks) personally being being confronted, cursed, and threatened by some Maryville fans at the conclusion

of the '99 game. Should I lump you all together and condemn the whole Maryville community for that? I happen to believe it was just a small group of classless people, disappointed that they lost, feeling like the referees "robbed" them, who saw someone in blue and orange and decided to take it out on them. If you can name more incidents involving WB folks, a big part of has to do with "losing a lot more games." Doesn't excuse it, or justify it ... but does explain why "our whole community" is getting a bad blanket tossed over it based on the actions of a few, random individuals.

Opposing fans, I assure you ... you can still come to WB--and to the beautiful Mike White field without "fearing for your life." Just stay out of the pressbox ! :D

I wouldn't even bring up the 99 game Govman if I was a WB fan . Ya , I'm sure you might of heard a few things from a few Maryville kids ... do you think WB starting a near riot , and a fire , and getting in our player's faces and cussing them , trying to block them from getting off the field , stealing a helmet ... and geez , that's not even mentioning the officiating is it ? I just know it was the only time George Quarles has ever tried to question a referee after the game ..... after WB was given how many chances to score inside the 5 ... 8 times ? You didn't see Coach Quarles in the paper the next day blaming anybody for the loss though , he showed class all the way .

Govman , I agree with you about WB having their share of classy fans , you being the perfect example of such , but I don't agree with you using the 99 game as an example of Maryville having no class , when that was the most bizarre set of circumstances I've ever seen at a game in my life . If our players ever beat a team at home and act like WB players and some fans did in 99 , I would be totally embarrassed .

You must of had some real thick WB glasses on in 99 , if you didn't see the Maryville fans and players being provoked .

The bottom line is a football team reflects It's head coach , when the head coach doesn't have enough class to walk away from a confrontation ( see Ooltewah ) , but instead whines to the newspapers , then he's teaching his players and his fans to be spoiled sports .

This sounds like a sad incident during a great football game. My question though is kind of in support of Mr Meadows, though I certainly do not condone his actions. Why did the radio personalities not apologize for making a comment and if they felt threatened leave the pressbox or ask someone to intervene? As far as a suspension I think that is a bit strong but maybe this gentlemen should not be allowed in the pressbox in that capacity. However, how many parents feel so defensive of their children that they are ready to fight anyone for them? Coach Meadows is a fine coach and good man, please do not continue to degrade his father on this website

I agree very much with Pepvol and a few others

That 99 game ended in a very suspect fashion and no thinking objective person could explain that fiasco. No Maryville fan or coach cried and wrote the paper. Every week it seems some WB fan has a major issue that is made public. One can only wonder what is not made public. The GOV’s pull off a great win, and they have an issue. How much is it going to cost the county to send the riot police back over there just for a football game like two years ago because the admistration failed to deal with a situation?

To the issue at hand, this individual who criminally assaulted another person should not have been "Escorted" to his car but should have in fact been cuffed arrested and charged right after the incident on the spot. The Press box coordinator or the person in charge should have stopped the game long enough for officers to get this criminal under control before he injured or killed another person. No excuses, no tolerance. During a time that we have now arrived in society when we have adults and kids assaulting, killing, molesting in and around our schools these days administrators, law enforcement and voters need to insist that people like this criminal be locked away, banned permanently from any school property and limp wristed judges incarnate people like him them to the fullest extent of the law without parole. Period.

I don't like to call anyone a criminal but in fact that is what he has made himself by assaulting another person over a call on the field. The gent who took the assault may be classy and a quality citizen but he is failing civil society by not filing charges and a suit to send the right message to this criminal and to the young people who have learned of this event.

Criminals must be dealt with and we must all show class and demand that our kids do. For the adults there is no excuse period!

I pity you if you really believe that.

Don't pity me for being afraid for the kids and opposing fans that compete against WB. The WB adminstrations needs to do something about these happenings before something very serious happens.

Let me use Maryville as an example......many WB fans have a strong hatred for anything Maryville. Did you see the threats that were raining from the WB stands when Tyler Burstrum was hurt? It wasn't pretty...let me assure you that. All it takes is one person to act on the threats that were being made.

MLReb..you need to relax. I understand you are bored because you guys win every game by 30 points and have nothing else to do.. No one in the stands is going to kill any of their opponents fans or players. As usual, GovMan is all over it. Mr. Meadows was escorted out of the game by WB officials and administration. What did you want the school to do? He has had some problems this year and I would be surprised to see him back in the press box. Regardless, all of you who have no rowdy fans please speak up. Once again, Maryville, is not allowed to comment. You guys do not know how some of you would act in a close game when something may not go your way. When you always win by 30, there is never a problem.

I'm sorry, I was not going to respond to this but I am the other half of the broadcast team. The post from Get right just struck a cord with me. So, what you're saying, is that the person who was hit should apologies for doing his job? I wonder if somebody came into your place of business and hit you because they didn't like how you were selling cars, building bridges doing brain surgery. Would you say I'm sorry for doing your job? He didn't make a comment about Mr. Meadows, the players on the field or anything at all worth being attacked for. It was an observation of a football play. You should feel safe in your place of work even if it's at a football game. Should he say this? Okay Mr. Meadows, it probably wasn't pass interference. I will just sit here and say nothing. Ridiculous.

Getright.....getreal......

You post is absurd. Now the radio announcers are at fault for not apologizing for their comments? And your suggestion is they should have stopped broadcasting the game and left the pressbox? You don't think that a suspension is in order for this guy for assaulting another man? Do you have any access to news where you live? This country has had its fill of lunatics going postal in schools and I for one think school events count as well. Heck, if a child uses physical violence in school they get suspended or expelled but you think parents or grandparents can duke it out when their feelings get hurt. It is up to the schools to provide a safe environment to play these games and that includes a safe place for fans, administration, as well as the media. This guy obviously has done stuff like this before and has an anger problem. At the least he should be required to get treatment. I don't think anyone has disparaged Coach Meadows on here but whatever his father gets he deserves.

Now that Wm Blount has the problems staring them in the face, because its out for all to hear and see, something will surely be done. The Meadows family should keep close reins on Dad @ Bradley Central or they may be visiting him in Bradley County's jail. And banning him for the rest of the home games is a given. There is no way this man could be mad enough to hit someone and not have shot him if he just so happen to be carrying a gun.

Whats Wm Blount doing about this? Anything?

How can you have the nerve to suggest that the ones being threatened should leave the press box? Did it ever occur to you that the one doing the threatening should be told to leave?

A radio announcer has the RIGHT to make the comment he did.

A suspension is too strong??????!!!!!????? When SHOULD he be suspended? Let's see this is his 2nd controntation with each one getting worse. Shoudl we wait till number 3 when he might decide to bring a weapon? And, don't EVEN say he wouldn't do that. I bet you the wife of the guy who killed those kids at the Amish school wouldn't have thought he would do what he did either! When there are warning signs given people had BETTER take heed! Or else they wind up saying later "I wish I had paid more attention to how he/she had been acting lately"

Maybe he should go to some anger management classes...or go to a doctor...or SOMETHNG. But, he does need to be suspended! A football player gets suspended for his actions at times. Why shouldn't this guy? Because he is the Coach's dad?

Talk about overgeneralizing!

I happened to be in the stands directly in front of Tyler when the late hit occurred. The only threats I heard is that the Maryville player should have been tossed for leading with his helmet. (In retrospect, probably not, but at the time many of us thought so).

To my knowledge there we no "threats raining down" (your phrase) against Maryville or the player involved or anything of the like. There were several people yelling that Maryville should "take a knee". If that is a threat, you need to go back to school (if you're out already)

It amazes me that some of you guys are still downplaying the wild , belligerent behavior of some of the William Blount fans . There were screams in a threatening , intimidating manner directed towards kids ... coming from supposedly grown men .... you could hear these guys clear over from the other side of the stadium ... I wonder how you would of felt if some Maryville fans were screaming like this at one of your kids ? If any Maryville fans around me ever start screaming at the kids from the other team like a raving lunatic , I will ask them nicely to stop .... because that would totally embarrass me as a Maryville fan .

Missing a few players who were playing baseball but still absolutely dominated. A lot of young ones got in halfway through the 3rd when the score reached 33-0. QB Tilton Pickett looked very sharp.  Sam Pickett is on another level this season. Seems to have put on 15 to 20 lbs in the off season and added a step as well. Transfer from last year Williamson caught numerous balls and is very elusive. Lots of athletes on this team. Defense was smothering and will only get better. The head coach from Sewanee was in attendance and offered 2 kids after the game. Could be a special year.
