Prayers Needed

I know this isn't about a football game, but the members of this board have been so good to come to for prayer requests when a community is hurting and in grief.

This past weekend, two of our own have lost their lives by their own hands. A young man of 30, Corey Tate, and one of our own sophomores, a very proud Greenbrier Bobcat, Evan Hughes, at only age 15. Evan was by all accounts a well liked young man with many friends and he loved all sports.

I hope Coacht won't mind if I ask you all to remember these families, and the hurting friends of these young people in prayer. This school is still reeling from the losses this year of Sherry Freeland, a well-loved Math teacher, as well as a 2007 Senior, Jordan Starks, as a result of a car accident. I, for one, believe in the power of prayer, and hope that you do too.

Thanks to all.

Thanks, GBCat2!

This is something that needs to be talked about and grieved, not swept under the rug (so to speak). The loss of Evan is especially sad for me because he was a well-liked classmate of my daughter. His close-knit 'circle of friends' are devastated. They are very smart (semi-nerdy?), but funny, witty and HUGE supporters of the athletics programs. You know...the kind that will be running corporations and helping to cure diseases in the not-so-distant future.

The unconditional support that high school students give each other is something that I think God Himself ordains in the lives of Christian young people. Their relationships are different from any other and, up to this point, should be the best times of their lives. Sometimes there is jealousy, but most of the time, when they are allowed to be themselves, young people that have been 'raised right' want their friends and classmates to succeed. According to my daughter, Evan and his buddies are that type of friend. When I got the phone call Sunday, after I told her, she just collapsed. And cried...and cried...and cried. My heart broke for her. It was a bad day. I doubt Evan would've done what he did had he stopped just for a moment to think about how it would affect so many who loved him. Indeed, he has affected more people than he could possibly have known. I cannot imagine being one of his close friends OR being one of his parents right now. What a senseless loss.

Please continue to pray for our children, but especially pray for his family. God said He sends the Great Comforter to us when we need Him. As our school and community mourns and grieves for Evan's family, I'm asking publicly, Lord, for You to do so at this sad and tragic time, in Jesus' precious name.

Parents, give your children a hug today and tell them that you love them. Children, do the same to your friends.

God bless!
