Not to split hairs but no team was a National Champion. They ended up the year ranked #1 in the nation. Being a champion means the team won a championship.

 

No one is implying that these teams won a national championship through a national playoff system. Their number one ranking is what justifies them as a national champion. The three teams mentioned did win a national championship although they didn't compete in a national playoff system for it. The National Sports News Service and USA Today consider a variety of factors to determine a national champion. Regardless, it's a presitigious award that only 3 Tennessee teams have ever received. Its meaning is mostly belittled by schools that weren't selected.

 

 

I spent part of the weekend doing some research on past national rankings. While I understand that national rankings and championships are subjective, I do find them interesting. While we probably all agree that national rankings are difficult to put much stock in, they do represent some nice publicity for the schools that receive them, and it's safe to say that the Tennessee schools that have received them are usually the best, or one of the top three or four schools, in the state in that particular year.

 

Anyway, here are some interesting tidbits I was able to find this weekend:

 

National Rankings. Finding national rankings before 1982 on the internet is a tough chore, but I was able to uncover some of the older National Sports News Service (NSNS) polls pre-1982. It is nice to see some of the Tennessee schools ranked in that period, including some high rankings:

 

Dobyns-Bennett: #9, 1960

Chattanooga Central: #5, 1962

Morristown East: #4, 1969

Tennessee: #4, 1971

Tennessee: #1, 1972

Baylor: #1, 1973

Bradley Central: #19, 1976

 

I'm sure some other Tennessee teams were ranked in other NSNS polls, but I was only able to find a few of the old polls. If anyone is interested in looking at them, I have put them on my website here: NSNS Rankings

 

National Champions. As noted above, and as discussed on this and other threads, Tennessee ('72) and Baylor ('73) have won mythical national titles. The 1958 Oak Ridge team is also credited with a mythical national title. Do any ORHS fans know the media source of that title? The only poll I am aware of that season is the NSNS poll, and a team out of Oregon is listed as its national champion (Note: I am certainly not questioning the quality of that team - Oak Ridge outscored its 10 opponents 438-26 and seemingly was far and away the best team in Tennessee that year - but I have yet to find the media source for that mythical title).

 

On the mythical national championship front, I also found that Knoxville High claimed a mythical national title in 1930. Does anyone know if KHS is the precursor school to Knoxville Central? Anyway, that team went 13-0 and outscored its opponents 568-12 that year. The research I uncovered indicates a team out of Arizona was the NSNS champion that year, but Knoxville High did have a "self-proclaimed" (not my word; just quoting) mythical national title that year.

I found a similar list a few years ago that goes back to 1902. It has Odessa Permian listed in 1972 as well. I'm not sure if that's due to rankings or if it's self-proclaimed. Oak Ridge wasn't in the originial list; I added it later.

Thanks. It's a chore to keep up (and I have so many things I am behind on), but I like doing it.

 

I have seen that list as well. It's an older looking site as you know, but they appear to keep it up.

 

Some of the stuff I have found is flat out interesting. A lot of teams "claimed" titles outside of any established poll. One team, the 1923 East Cleveland Shaw team, claims a national title with a 9-1 record. The loss is footnoted in their records as "quit the game due to dubious referreing decisions." We may not have any games today if that were the case. /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

 

Anyway, check back to that national champions page over the next couple of weeks if you find that stuff interesting. I eventually will have season scores/schedules for all national champions (just click on the record).

Intresting and great work. Can't agree more, to be the number one you have to defeat all commers. In HS it is not possible to have a true national championship team. We can just be subjective and use polls. Not agood system, jut the only one available.

Very true; I couldn't tell you when Madison opened. If you try to picture the area from overhead, you'd have Madison and Dupont on Old Hickory Blvd, on opposite sides of Gallatin Rd, and East and Litton down Gallatin Rd, not too far away. You could probably throw in Maplewood and Goodlettsville on Dickerson Rd. That makes for 6 pretty good teams in a very small area. Small wonder there were some great rivalries in those days.

 

William Bryant (Bill) Brimm developed Nashville-area powerhouse football teams right after he took over as head coach of the new Madison High in 1953. His teams in the 1960s were Nashville’s best, with his Rams once compiling a 28-game winning streak.

 

More known for his football success, Brimm also coached basketball and baseball (and briefly golf, tennis and track) at the school from 1953-1970 and won NIL championships in all sports

 

We went to the Clinic Bowl (a Nashville bowl played at Vanderbilt between two top area teams prior to playoffs). When those guys got to be seniors in 1955, we went 10-0.

 

BB: Our teams won NIL championships in 1955 and 1958, then three straight in ’60, ’61 and ’62 (when the Rams went on their 28-game winning streak). I got my 100th victory at that time.

In 1961, we were undefeated, and we played in the Butter Bowl against Fayetteville High which was ranked No. 1, and we were No. 2 (Action Ratings). If we had won, we would have been named state champions, but we tied 0-0 and they finished No. 1.

It has become quiet on the boards lately, especially with it being the dead period. So I thought I would attempt to make a list of the top 25 historical teams in the state of Tennessee to help generate some talking. The list is intended to encompass all great teams of the past. I attempted to exclude teams that have been subpar throughout the years, although 2008 will be "their year." /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> The list is in no particular order. Do you agree? Disagree? Any comments?

 

 

1. MBA Big Red

Year football was established: circa 1899???

State Championships: 9

2nd Winningest team in the state of Tennessee

 

MBA in my opinion is a team that should belong in everyone's top 25 poll, maybe top 5 poll. They're consistently a tough team and they play other top teams from around the nation.

 

2. Alcoa Tornadoes

State Championships: 9

 

Alcoa has been a force in 2A for several years and a top team in the state.

 

3. Chattanooga Central Pounders

State Championships: 6

 

They have struggled lately, but six state titles is impressive.

 

4. Maryville Rebels

State Championships: 11

60 Game Winning Streak

3rd Winningest Program in Tennessee

 

They have won the past 4 state titles in 4A and a top notch coaching staff.

 

5. Milan Bulldogs

State Championships: 4

 

6. Brentwood Academy Eagles

State Championships: 10

 

Brentwood Academy is another top 5 team. They are one of four teams to win back to back state titles in the highest classification.

8. Tennessee High Vikings

National Championships: 1

Year football was established: 1900, recorded 1911

Old Nicknames: Maroon and White Machine, Warriors, Adamites

 

The Vikings have been playing football for quite some time. One of four teams to win back to back state championships at the highest classification. Declared National Champions in 1972.

 

9. Cleveland Blue Raiders

State Championships: 3

 

The Blue Raiders won back to back to back state titles in 4A from 1993 to 1995.

 

10. Riverdale Warriors

State Championships: 4

 

Riverdale has been a 5A powerhouse throughout the years.

 

11. South Pittsburgh Pirates

State Championships: 4

 

12. Marion County Warriors

State Championships: 4

 

13. Melrose Golden Wildcats

State Championships: 2

When I started at Madison in 76 the program had been in the decline for a few years. I think they had only won 1 game in 5 years. /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

We had Bob Leach for a new Coach who brought Madison back to it's winning ways. /cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="B)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" /> We only had a School of about 700+ playing at the AAA the highest level in the state at that time. During my 3 years there we had the NIL bacK of year twice. (Berry Monda & Dewayne Rickets).

In 1978 we were 7-0 and one of he few undefeated 3A teams left in the State before we lost to H'ville and Mt. Juliet. We had some big wins against Seveirville. Hillsboro, Statford, White House, Dupont and others. If I remember correstly we had 3 backs that went over a 1,000 yeards each and our QB was over 800. It's the same offense Coach Leach took to Startford and made them a contender in the 80's.

Those were great Community schools in the old NIL. It's sad to see what has happened to the Nashville Metro Programs.

If I remember correct Goodpasture placed 2nd in the 1A that year so there were some good ball players on that side of Nashville back then.
