say it ain't so!!! However, I did play when the single wing was still going strong for us!!

Dang, you as old as some of the rest of us aren't you???? Regular QB usually stays in but out on the wing. It's worked really well for the Rebs this season just because we have a RB taking the snap that can make things happen with the ball in that situation. I'm having a ball watching teams do it and acting like it's something new!!!!!! Ya' gotta love this game!!!!

Old Pirate says it's simply power football that has a great opportunity to gain numbers on a team at the point of attack. PT......OP is not sure when you played but most likely yous remember how opposing teams would stake the line to stop "The Play" and still had a difficult time. "ANY" defensive end that ever played against it got ear holed the whole game. Dad burnit that big Cody youngon leading Terrell up the whole sure made some DBs eyes jest about pop out. Figure theys felt like a run away train was headed their way. Figure ole coach Vic may sees what he's got with Terrell and drop one of them passes to the WR across the middle or TE behind the DBs before the year is over. Dad burnit.......OP can sees it now......The Pirates score with the Old Single Wing bread and butter option run or pass.

OP is not saying there's nothing wrong with the SP offense, jest a wrinkle would/could be exciting to sees.

Unfortunately, with the modern blocking rules, the real single wing offense is a dead offense. This "Wildcat" (or whatever you want to call it) is absolutely nothing like a real single wing offense.

A real single wing offense features lots of deception and power running. It featured multiple backs that had to be able to throw the football. Linemen had to be mobile as most plays called for multiple linemen pulling on every play. And as a lineman, you had to be able to take your shoulder and drive it into a defensive players hip and drive block them out of the way. Techneque (sp?) was much more important than shear strength.

When run properly, the single wing was an absolute thing of beauty. And make no mistake, the "Wildcat" is absolutely nothing like the real single wing offense.

Old Pirate partially agrees with you RF, 1 point OP was attempting to make is the importance of the TB-Single Wing/QB-Spread to be a duel threat. As for blocking...the rules have changed that make it slightly more difficult. SP folkes can remember when the Pirates got away from that 1 single important detail. This OP can remember the QB/BlockingBack, the wingback and tailback all throwing the football.

I remember when SP use to run that side saddle sing wing. It wasnt a joke either. They had that QB that they called a Blocking Back and he led the tailback and helped knocked big holes in that line with the extra blocker. That was blood and guts football back then. SP use to just say can you stop us because we are running right there on this play and the next play was the opposite side but the same play. It was boom, boom, boom. It was tough football for sure.

Sportman I must agree. 46 meant that someone or several were about to get knocked silly. That was a powerful play. SP ran that single wing not too long ago. That single wing always gave the runners huge holes to run through. You had the line, the other runners and the QB all leading up in the same hole. It was hard nosed I will tell you that.
