Referee/Fan-in-stand relations?

One of the worst I've seen, and I've seen this official in games I don't care who wins too, also does college games somehow. That's not always telling in the quality.

Despite the griping, most of the games I've seen this sure there was nothing memorable which means the refs did their job. The memorable things were biggies, though.

I think this type of thread is started every year on one of the two basketball forums. Every year there will be bad officiating, we all (Fans and Most Officials) just hope that it doesn't affect the true outcome of the games. But when it is all said and done, just remember that it is a game, and there a many things in life more important than basketball.

I agree with you. I wish that the off color comments, cursing, and vulgar language would be totally banned from every section of the gym, from the floor to the stands. One last question, did calling a ref names or using crude comments about their calls ever really change how they call a game? No one is perfect including ref.'s and they get critized from every angle. It's a hard job and you need to try it just one time. Some posters have challenged using colorful language as their right, but what about the rights of those of us who don't appreciate colorful language. It is a high school game and no more.

Why can't we have an evaluation system like other states? Coaches or Athletic Directors rate each official after each game. If an official consistantly gets bad marks perhaps a change of venue or some additional training is needed. I have seen and watched officials walk onto a floor and let one coach scream and yell and when the other coach says anything he's warned and "T"ed up at the first word. As it is now they answer to no one. The regional assigning official gives out games and assigns teams. How would you like it if you get a certain set of officials and you never win a game, EVER, when they are calling? You are "T"ed up for your foot being across the side line and the other coach has done it the entire game.

I guess I just believe that we all have bad games, coaching, playing and officiating. Right now the only thing a coach or school can do is "blacklist" an official and that usually causes reprisals from his peers.

:thumb: OK, let me have it.......

i like that idea flat creek jim evaluations would be cool I am not sure you would or could do every game but have sort of generic form for each administrator to fill out something that should only take 5 minutes and if you get repeated poor performances then its time to go look at them I know assigners do not have time to watch all of their officials work but if you are gonna put guys on district games i think they should have some sort of review

The reason you always hear the phrase, if you don't like the officiating, go take the test and become one, is because the lack of "quality" officials in any high school district is astounding. The "bad" refs that everyone hates to see come into the gym, are there because there isn't anyone better behind them trying to get their games. The good refs move on to college basketball and eventually leave the high school arena. Thus why it is high school basketball.

Pay your $5, yell for your team, yell at the refs, but keep it clean. Think about what the implications of "You Suck" and "We got screwed" really mean. Pretty vulgar if you ask me. Just my $.02

Probably the best post of this thread.

Big Daddy, I cant for the life of me understand why a fan would put himself in a a position to be thrown out of a game.

I go to all the Lake Co games and yes ,things get rowdy from a lot of fans.We have a certain official that officiates a lot of our games..Has a cousin that is from Lake Co..Everyone hates him calling any of our games..His cousin will yell ..All right ..John Doe..You need to call it both ways ..You're terrible..You're letting them walk and everything else..He is loud..The official hears him and sometimes will smile..We've got a couple more officials from the Dyersburg and Obion Co area and know it's going to be a long night.I have a good friend that goes to all the games with me.We have this official that lives about 7 miles from Lake Co but is in Obion Co..We all know him..Most of us has played ball against him..Just about every game ,my friend will say..You can do better than that..You need to go back to Samburg..You're pitiful Jonh Doe...So far ..hasn't been thrown out..He is loud but not cursing too much..lol..I have an uncle that goes to all the games..usually he stands up at the end against the wall..the officials won't let anyone stand right under the basket,I guess if someone is going for a layup and is hammered..don't want to get the player or the fans hurt..Usually he's off about 15 feet from under the basket with 5 or 6 more people and a school officer..Pretty close to the officials and like when a team takes the ball out of bounds ,the officials are only a few feet away and he said something about their calls..the official stopped the game..went over to the school officer and said he wanted him removed. The officer told the official that he's at the same spot every game and wasnt saying anything out of the way and wasnt going to make him leave..but did tell my uncle to not say anything..So..sometimes maybe the official doenst always make the call as far as leaving..May depend on the school..Another incident was about 2 or 3 weeks ago at Greenfield..We had several fans hollering at the officials just about all night long..seemd every time T.T. Flowers drove to the basket..the official was putting his hand behind his head before contact was made..We knew he was going to call a charge every time..He called 3 in a row on her..The same official..I'd never seen him before and I've been going to games for over 40 years..The Lake Co coach hadn't never had him do any of our games..Heard he was from Bruceton..Anyway..it was a lot of calls that Lake Co fans thought were questionable, leading to the best player .T.T. not playing much at all..But in about the 3rd quarter ,there was a call on the far side ..an official right beside the play..That official never made a call..But the official on the far side of the court blew his whistle when this fan hollered out and his voice carried..He said exactly..Surely you're not going to Call that from way over there..The official stopped the game and said ,Don't let me hear another word ..About 2 minutes later..this same fan said ..Come on Lake Co..Just gotta keep playing ..The official just heard his voice..The official stopped the game..went and got the police officer from Greenfield and had him escorted from the gym..A couple of us sitting close by told the officer that he never said anything to get thrown out ..after the official told him to not say anything else..Even the scorekeeper from Greenfield said he didnt say anything..So..sometimes an official does have too much clout..This fan is the son-in law of the principal at Lake Co..Had this same incident been at Lake Co..dont believe he would have been thrown out ..So I guess the bottom line is..If you're not cursing or threating the officials or players..What is acceptable..

I thought I had seen it all when it came to officiating, after a tournament game in Dalton Georgia earlier this season, then came tonight. Actually I didn't even see it-but after a "no way", an "are you kidding" and an "are you sure it wasn't just their colors (a coincidence)", and a reply of "I'm positive, I saw it" each time, plus this ref's performance in both the girls and boys games, I believe it. I was told the ref had the audacity to come into the gym with a warm-up suit with the opposing team's name on it (Howard). The calls and no-calls in both games (a close win, and a close game that turned into a blowout loss) by this one official in particular really seemed fishy, plus the timing on them were convenient for Howard, the visiting team. In the girls game, the hosts' leading scorer fouled out and the both the fourth and fifth foul seemed to be "phantom calls", then the visitors were allowed to knock over a player to make a steal just after the foul out and nearly tied the game. In the boys game, the entire third quarter and some of the fourth-until the lead and win were assured-was a free for all, favoring Howard.

If that's accurate about the attire, can anyone justify this official reffing that team's games, ever? I really did see bias on the court-often there's what I'd call poor officiating due to a lack of experience most likely, but this one seemed to be clearly favoring one team.

Team A is leading by 10 with about 20 seconds left, stalling and running out the clock. Team B is applying basically token pressure as Team isn't looking to score. One of Team B's players sees an opening and grabs for the ball, near halfcourt and in full view of the referees. Each player tugs for it and both end up on the floor but nothing happens other than that, no rolling or shoving at all-until Team A's player decides to punch the opposing player in the jaw, hard. After a short discussion, the "punchee" gets two free throws and her team maintains possession.

My question, how in the world is that not an ejection?

Good question. If it truly was a punch, then an ejection is warranted. I would be willing to guess that a referee blew his/her whistle, all three looked at the table to see which way the arrow was pointing, and none of the officials saw the punch, just the aftermath. Just a guess though

Before I start, let me say that, in my opinion, the best officiating crew I've seen all year...heck, for many years...called the game between Goodpasture and Greenbrier last night. GREAT job, guys!, whoever you are. Also, I'm a GB parent and we lost...after having a big lead late in the game.

I heard Roy Williams quoted as saying today's game has gone from basketball as it was originally meant to be played to hand-to-hand combat. I agree wholeheartedly. The only ones that can control that, though, are the hired guns: Coaches and refs. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that either one cares enough about their chosen profession - and I use that term VERY lightly regarding referees even though they are paid VERY well - to properly exercise their authority. I hold the T$$AA 100% responsible for the digression of this wonderful game. It's a shame today's superior athletes work so hard on getting better only to be physically assaulted almost while trying to play the game the way it's supposed to be played. Hand-checking and pushing off are done to gain an advantage and ARE fouls. So, call it. I don't care if you foul out the whole team. Enforce the rules! It's your job!

One last thought on this and I'll get off my soapbox: I believe that most refs know...I mean are aware of...the game and the rules...and absolutely, nobody's perfect. My biggest problem with them is that the majority are so ARROGANT and let the fans' emotions and comments affect their judgment during the heat of the battle. I say if you can't take it, quit. The game will be better for it. And stop making that stupid statement before each game reminding us that derogatory and inflammatory comments shouldn't be used (vulgar, I agree, but I don't know if it even says that  ). If you're gonna do that, you should also give us a customer service (fans are paying customers, big-time) phone number to call when we need to report incompetent and arrogant referees.

My 2¢.
