TSSAA Playoff Process Is The Biggest Joke Ever

Here is an interesting article on economics and the TSSAA in the Chatt TFP.

High School Football Economics

If you're going to continue the six-class playoff group, you're going to have the same problems with wildcards, getting in on non-district soft schedules and such. Notre Dame didn't win a district game but they made it, that's not to single out ND but they took advantage of the way it's done now. The state can't support six regular season, Division I classes. You'd have 50 teams in each class. Five was a stretch though it was used from 93-10. There's no great way to do it since some districts have more larger, or smaller teams in a particular class.

I still don't think it's a big deal some teams "have more 4A teams in their district than others", etc, as they're actually A, AA and AAA teams before any playoff split-the same since 1969. Having larger teams in the district doesn't always mean a disadvantage, again using ND as an example they lost to 3A playoff level teams Seq, Bledsoe, CCS, Grundy and also Signal which had been classified 3A before moving up. Tyner, an example in the article, won their district last year and was second this year despite facing mostly larger schools in their district, not sure why they're complaining about that. Red Bank is down to 785 students, according to the school system figures in Hamilton County, I believe that would put them in the current 3A playoff group if it started again this year. The one school finishing above them, East Hamilton, already has AAA/5A level enrollment but that's another issue.

Cutting out first or even second round games between district opponents leads to the bracket being changed too much, if a district had 1, 7, and 8 that 1 would host a 6, a likely much tougher game. Or if a district had a 1, 4 and 5 it could affect another team in the bracket hosting or traveling.

Indian, we started this hybrid-Z mess in 2009 which is an attempt at supporting a 6 playoff format under the guise of there only being 3 classes like A, AA, and AAA. If that is the case, have 1 more set of games playing the 1a to 2a champs etc, for a grand A champ. :roflol:

In all seriousness, even the 5 classes system started being a little watered down following the DII split. They really should have gone to a A, AA, AAA, and AAAA system following the split along the lines of the 92 and earlier format and things would be workable. At some point, the TSSAA is going to get its hand broken off sticking it in the "Cookie Jar" too many times. As a non-profit, they need to be scrutinized for any possibility of excessive profits. I realize Childress wants to make sure the salaried staff payroll is met, but that is also a slippery slope that gets into a conflict of interest area.

Four classes would work-75 teams currently in each class-but there would still be some problems with determining the number of teams in a district, other issues. In the one potential class I looked at, AA, I had trouble getting it to eight regions due to some areas having a lot more teams in that class. Areas would be Upper-East Tennessee, immediate Knoxville area, Cleveland to Kingston area, Chattanooga area (two because of 13 schools), Nashville area, southern-middle Tennessee, Jackson-Milan area (two because of 11 schools), and Memphis (10 teams). If you want to have teams play 9 or 10 region games, you could manage it but that would be tough and almost eliminate non-district rivalries. Marion, potentially and an example, might have to choose between playing South Pittsburg and Whitwell, Sequatchie, between Bledsoe and Whitwell.

You could make it 16 districts, averaging a little less than 5 teams each, but if you just take 2 teams from each class it leaves out deserving #3s. Loudon would be an example in recent seasons.

If you make it a number not easily divided, say 12 districts to even out for geography and number of teams in each, you run into having byes or possibly the dreaded wild cards.

If you go back to taking four set teams, 1-4, there will always be some teams in tougher districts probably capable of beating another district's 1, but left out.

You'll have difficulties from year to year in any system, the challenge is to find the one with the least number of issues.

People also complain about the BCS for college, they complained before the BCS. Basically anyone who does not benefit from the system is going to complain. The TSSAA system is far from perfect, however, it was established by the members of the TSSAA. All the leadership of TSSAA is doing is enforcing what was voted on by the members. If you don't like it complain to your school representatives so they know your feelings. Also provide an alternative that will please everyone (hint, you can't).

It WAS NOT voted on by the members. The board of control and Mr. Childress did this unilaterally. The coaches voted against the Z plan and the Board of Goobers came back with this cash-cow monstrosity. Its time the member schools call the board members from their respective regions on the carpet and replace them. Grider needs to be chewing Layne's ear for example, but good.

They need to get that Carter man to come back and use his playoff system. I like that Childress man, but his playoff system is not as good as that Carter mans system. I have talked to this Childress man several times on the phone. I told him that he should use that Carter mans playoff.
