Cheatham County (6-4) travels to Nashville on Friday night to take on CPA (9-1) in the opening round of the state playoffs. Both teams are coming off of emotional wins as the Cubs took down Harpeth 27-7 and CPA knocked off Pearl-Cohn 14-10. This is the 7th time in 10 years that Coach Finley has taken the Cubs to the playoffs while Coach Martin is 1 for 1 at qualifying for the postseason at CPA.

CC has had a very impressive year, especially later in the season. The problem for them will be scoring, as CPA's 1st team defense has only given up 6 TD's in 10 games, and those were to Maplewood, Goodpasture,Pearl and East Lit. - all fast teams.

Don't know about CC's speed but they better have some to move the ball on CPA.

CPA's biggest opponent lately has been penalties and turnovers at critical times keeping them from scoring much. CC has to hold CPA below 17 to win, IMO.

I believe that is a fair assessment; you are right on about the speed thing and CC does not have an abundance of it although I wouldnt call them slow. They certainly do not have the speed of the 4 teams you mentioned. They like to pound the ball and grind away and I agree w/ you, they will not beat CPA like that.....

CPA wins 42-7. Cheatham doesn't have the size or speed to keep up with the Lions. I pick CPA to win the 3A state championship.

Don't under estimate CC. They can be tough and are hard to run on. About CPA winning 3A state championship, I'd be careful if I were you. You only beat Pearl Cohn by 4 points. Throw Smith Co into the works and CPA might have a hard time geeting past the 3rd round if they get that far. If you should get to the finals you still have to meet CAK most likely and you will never get by them. I look for CAK to win it all this year. We'll see though. As they say on any given field, any given night, any given team can win. The Winless Rams beat NO today.

The Lions are a big favorite in this one following an impressive regular season that includes victories over the likes of Goodpasture & Pearl-Cohn. Albert Mitchell is a good looking player at quarterback and he has some weapons to distribute the football to in Sam Cranford, Vic Wharton, Jackson Cothern, and Hunter Thurley. The Lions have a big strong offensive line and they are physical. Winston Williams is an outstanding running back. The defense is anchored by a line that includes Thurley and James Elliott. Robert Brown and Glenn Fleenor are 2 solid linebackers and the secondary has some guys who'll go and get it (Cranford & Cothern). J.R. Osborne has a tremendously strong leg for a high school placekicker. The 51 yard kick he hit at Maplewood right before halftime had plenty of room to spare. Wharton is in all likelihood one of the state's top five kick return specialists. He has returned 4 kicks/punts for scores this year. Coach Martin, Coach Haywood, and Coach Smith have to feel pretty good about their team's chances of making a deep run in this year's playoffs. They've already beaten Goodpasture and Pearl-Cohn this season and would host a semifinal game against one of the west's powers (Milan, Fairview, Camden, or Westview). I can see why TheBrooklynBrawler has CPA as one of his "teams to beat".

CPA has been outstanding defensively all year. The last 3-4 games; however, they have been very sloppy on offense with penalties at critical times and mistakes. One problem has been a parade of late season nagging injuries that have caused lineup changes and players not being able to go full speed. Hopefully, they can come out fast against CC, and let the starters get a little rest during the game, or after half.

Little mistakes and the inability to go 100% will bite you as you go into the playoffs where games are often decided by one or two big plays.

It looks like Cheatham County is primarily a running team(2934 yards rushing for the year vs. 534 passing). Maplewood was successful running against CPA as Ladarius Vanlier gained 215 against CPA. Of course, with Vanlier if you blink, he is in the secondary. He is the quickest runner I have seen this year.

CPA has 2005 yards running and 1315 yards passing, which is a much more balanced attack than what you have seen from CPA in years past.

The key to the game probably is CPA's defense against Cheatham County's running game.

If that's the key, then CPA wins. No one except Maplewood has run on them this year, and they would have beat Maplewood without the kickoff fumble lost at the end. They bend sometimes but sustaining a drive against them is very tough, and their red zone defense is fantastic.

Also if you get behind, and are not a passing team, you are in big trouble.
