Current Playoff Format. Which Do We Prefer?

Honestly, I like the old format better even though it makes no difference which one the TSSAA uses. Football is football in the playoffs.

 

Old Format:

 

1 vs 4

2 vs 3

1 vs 4

2 vs 3

 

New Format

1 vs 8

4 vs 5

2 vs 7

3 vs 6

I like the new format, just wish the tssaa would tweak the criteria. To me H2H against a team has to factor in if said teams have the same record..

I liked the old format. It was crystal clear what a team needed to do in order to make the playoffs. Now, with the selection criteria for wild card teams being the way it is, you can't get a clear look at the playoff picture until the Saturday after Week 10.

I see a lot of positives and negatives. It does make scheduling for the top teams a little more challenging tho. I like the excitement factor of the new playoff format too

I like the current system because it gives every team in the playoffs the same amount time to focus on the team there playing there 1st round game. The old system some teams knew week 8 or 9 and others did not

I agree with you with the TSSAA tweak the criteria. There is not enough emphasis with the head to head factor with the same record. Edited July 7, 2013 by tennesseestud2013

I like the fact that with the current format, teams have the opportunity to play against schools they otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity to play. For example, schools in this area may have the opportunity to play a Knoxville school right off the bat as opposed to not seeing them until the 3rd or 4th round with the old format. A drawback to that would obviously be travel time though. One thing I dislike about the current criteria is that it seems to dissuade many schools from playing good teams since a loss goes against your playoff ranking. With the old format, you could schedule 3 challenging non-conference opponents to help you prepare for the playoffs if you had a soft conference schedule. Winning or lose those non-con games didn't have a significant bearing on where you were seeded in the playoffs.

I understand "top 4" is as cut and dry as it gets, which made the old system much easier to understand, but should a 4th place 3-7 team from Memphis get in the playoffs over a 5th place 5-5 or 6-4 team from the midstate? That was my only fault with the old format.

 

The new system, though still a cluster with its own flaws, does do a much better job of weeding that kind of thing out.

In 2011 a 3-7 Coffee Co. team made the playoffs. Mean while (in another class in a previous season) a 7-3 Dresden team did not make the playoffs. This is all in the new classification.

I was talking about it happening in the same class in the same season.

 

While a disparity as big as the one you mention wasn't probable, it was still very possible in the old system. In the new system, there are wilcards. Those wildcards exist for a reason. And that is to even things out once the top 2 teams in each region are decided, so that we can avoid a 4-6 team getting in over a 6-4, or a 3-7 over a 7-3.

Bottom line is win and your in but no way someone from your district can say anything about the playoffs and wildcards getting in. Rossview would not win a game in our district and they are able to get into the 6A playoffs as a wildcard because they beat all the 5A competition in Clarksville. No way that is better. Your Henry County team can schedule hard nondistrict games because you can walk through your district. Try making a schedule when you play in a district where all the teams would beat everyone in your district.
