Wrestling: No. 23 Virginia drops dual meet at No. 5 Ohio State

November 14, 2015 • By AFP

Garrett Peppelman (Harrisburg, Pa.) at 165 pounds and Zach Nye (Enola, Pa.) at 197 pounds grabbed victories in their respective bouts as No. 23 Virginia (3-2) dropped its dual meet at No. 5 Ohio State (1-0) by a score of 34-6 on Friday (Nov. 13).

A redshirt freshman, Peppelman picked up the first win of the night for the Cavaliers with a 5-3 decision over senior Justin Kresevic to put Virginia in the scoring column for the match. Nye, a senior, picked up the second win for the Cavaliers, grabbing a 10-6 decision over Matthew O’Hara.

“Tonight was a rough night,†said Virginia head coach Steve Garland. “We left a lot of wins out there on the mat. There were at least three bouts I really think we should have had, but Ohio State found a way to finish matches and finish them well. This is where we will attack as a team and get better. They are tough lessons to learn, but this is the process.

“You get in these battles now and learn and develop, and it benefits you in March. Those guys will learn from those mistakes and be better at the end of the day. We have another really tough one Sunday against another nationally-ranked team, so we are blessed. We have an awesome opportunity to get back out there and compete. We’re thankful for that and excited to see how our guys respond.â€

Ohio State picked up major decisions over the Cavaliers at 125 and 141 pounds, while George DiCamillo (Highland Heights, Ohio) dropped a tight 8-7 decision to fifth-ranked Johnni DiJulius at 133 pounds. All three Cavaliers wrestled against foes ranked nationally in their weight class.

The Buckeyes would extend the lead on the Cavaliers with a fall at 149 pounds and a narrow 3-2 decision by Jake Ryan over Andrew Atkinson (Lynchburg, Va.) at 157 pounds. Peppelman would then get the Cavaliers on the board with his win at 165 pounds.

Wins at 174 and 181 pounds extended the overall lead for the Buckeyes before Nye would pick up his win at 197 pounds. Ohio State closed out the match with a fall at heavyweight.

Virginia will return to action on Sunday, hosting a 1 p.m. contest against No. 15 Old Dominion at Memorial Gymnasium.

Diaz trying to make a name for himself among Archer mat stars

Story by David Friedlander

Saturday, November 14, 2015

Throughout its relatively brief history, Archer High School has turned out some great wrestlers who have cast a high profile among the amateur wrestling scene not only in Georgia, but nationally.

On this season’s team alone, no fewer than six Tigers carry national rankings from some of the county’s top publications.

With so many individuals emanating a particularly large amount of attention, it’s easy for other just as skilled wrestlers to almost get lost.

Chris Diaz is a perfect example.

As a reigning state champion in his weight class and a two-time state runner-up, the senior might normally be among the most recognizable members of his team.

But with such teammates as twin brothers Thomas and Daniel Bullard and junior Quinn Miller, Diaz is seldom the first name people think about when they talk Archer wrestling.

“On any other team in the state, he’d be the absolute superstar,†Tigers coach Tom Beuglas said of Diaz. “He and Vinny (Artigues) kind of get lost in the shuffle. He’s fantastic, and the great thing about him is he never complains about that. He’s a great team guy.â€

True, being a little bit in the background doesn’t seem to bother Diaz. In fact, he looks at it as somewhat of an advantage.

“I think it’s a good thing to know that you’re not always the best,†Diaz said. “You’re never going to get a big head in this (wrestling) room. Somebody’s always there to push you. Even our lesser guys who aren’t nationally-ranked or recognized, they’re still going to go out and push you.

“So, it’s just good to not be one of the guys who, in other programs, they might be the best guy by far, and they’re kind of lazy going through practice. Here, you’re going to get pushed by somebody.â€

It’s not as if Diaz is a total unknown among wrestling circles He’s done plenty of the course of his high school career to make a name for himself.

In addition to his state runner-up finishes in his freshman and sophomore seasons, he has also begun to assert himself on the national level, including a runner-up finish at 132 pounds in last season’s NHSCA national tournament, as well as participating in the prestigious Super 32 tournament last month.

But to Diaz, the crowning achievement of his career so far was the one he finally reached last February after it had eluded him for two years.

His 6-1 decision over Mountain View’s Adam Flatt in the 132-pound finals of the GHSA State Tradtional Championships made him a state champion after the two near misses.

“I think really, (the state title) kind took that pressure off,†Diaz said. “I feel like it was looming over my head. ‘You still haven’t won state.’ … Then this year, I was finally able to get it. That was the first thing I thought right when the whistle blew. I looked up and said, ‘Finally.’â€

One of the main reasons it took Diaz so long is directly tied with the wealth of top-flight talent at Archer, and his willingness to sacrifice for the team.

After finishing as state runner-up at 132 pounds as a freshman, Diaz could have been among the favorites to take the title a season later.

But with the Tigers embroiled in a battle to repeat as state team champions, Beuglas asked Diaz to take one for the team.

“As a freshman, he wrestled at 132,†Beuglas said. “But his sophomore year, I made him cut to 126 to be in (former Collins Hill star) Ryan Milhof’s weight class. Most kids would’ve avoided him, but (he) and his family both said, ‘Coach, we’ll do what it takes to win.’ Not many kids will do that these days.â€

But while that move may have cost him a shot at another state title, Diaz believes the experience he gained in a narrow 4-3 defeat to a wrestler the caliber of Milhof has only made him better in the long run.

“I knew what I was getting into going into it,†Diaz recalled. “I was up for the challenge, and I was just trying to help my team out. … You learn a lot about character (facing wrestlers like Milhof). There are days where you’re just not having a good day. You’re going to get taken down six or seven times. You’ve just got to come back … and keep picking yourself up and push through it.â€

With a senior season still in the shadow of some high-profile teammates, one might think Diaz would look forward to going off to college next year in order to strike out on his own.

However, he will be joining his current teammates the Bullard twins after signing to wrestle in college with N.C. State last week, choosing the Wolfpack over other college offers from Duke, Tennesee-Chattanooga, Brown and others.

“The thing I liked about (N.C. State) was the whole team mentality,†Diaz said. “You went in there (to the wrestling room) and you know everybody is prepared to win. Their whole goal was, ‘We’re going to become national champions. We’re not there right now, but we’re going to put the work in and everything.’â€

When the WAY you compete (being aggressive, never quitting, giving a full effort, enjoying the battle, etc.) becomes more important to you than winning, that is when you will start winning more and maximizing your potential.

PrepXtra: Wrestlers to watch

9:57 PM, Nov 19, 2015

Sammy Evans

HIDE CAPTION

Other parts of the state have traditionally dominated the state rankings, but the PrepXtra area has made its mark on the mat the past few seasons and this year could see an even bigger improvement for area individuals. Here are some wrestlers to watch:

106 pounds: Calvin Martin, William Blount, sophomore. Possibly the area's next big up-and-comer, Martin placed sixth in the state as a freshman after claiming the Region 3-AAA title.

113: Ethan Maxwell, Gibbs, senior. Named to the All-KIL team last season, Maxwell will look for redemption as he won the Region 2-AAA championship and was a hard-fought loss in the state finals away from a crown.

120: Juan Hernandez, Heritage, Jr. The Region 3-AAA champion finished fourth in the state tournament and has benefited from traveling the country for tournaments and facing some of the nation's top wrestlers.

126: Jacob Ruiter, Pigeon Forge, senior. After finishing second in the state at 120 pounds, Ruiter has aspirations of going out on top and will be a favorite to make the finals.

132: Matthew Kieta, Pigeon Forge, senior. Kieta, who has been a force on the state scene since his freshman season, will look to repeat as state champion. A candidate to wrestle in college, Kieta is one of the area's most dominant on the mat.

138: Gary Reagan, Pigeon Forge, senior. Reagan, who spends his offseason travelling to national tournaments, fell just short of a state title in a tough loss in the finals against Harpeth's Tyler Christian. The overtime battle between the two was named the Class A-AA tournament's best match.

145: Michael Diemer, Heritage, senior. The Region 3-AAA champion finished third in state tournament, has been wrestling for several years and benefited from Heritage's respected feeder program.

152: Josh Croley, Pigeon Forge, senior. One of the staples and leaders of Pigeon Forge's state championship team, Croley finished third in the state tournament and has the goal of finishing his high school career as a state champion.

160: Karim Shereef, Alcoa, senior. Shereef may not step on the mat until mid-December as he is busy leading Alcoa in rushing in the Tornadoes' drive for another football state title. But when he does, Shereef will look to dominate another playing surface as he aims for his third straight state championship. Shareef concluded his junior campaign by pinning his championship-match opponent 56 seconds in and was named the Class A-AA best wrestler.

170: Tate Holmes, Anderson County, senior. A third-place finish at the state tournament last season gained Holmes some well-deserved respect and the senior has a chance to vie for a state crown this season.

285: Samson "Sammy" Evans, Alcoa, junior. One of the state's most imposing forces, Evans repeated as state champion in the big man division after overcoming a knee injury last season. Evans is one of the area's most experienced wrestlers and is renowned for his offseason training regimen.

Debien was forced to bow out of his finals match at 133 due to injury. His first four wins included three decisions and a pin. Junior Scottie Boykin also placed in the event, finishing fourth at 197. Junior McCoy Newberg was the other placer, finishing sixth at 184.

...Garrison was one of four county wrestlers that won state championships. Prior to this year, the county had never had more than one state wrestling champion in a single year.

Eagleville senior Hayden Hammonds beat East Ridge’s Hunter Owens 4-0 for the 113-pound title in Class A/AA. Riverdale sophomore Nick Boykin defeated Cleveland’s Koran Kennedy by pin in 3:30 in the 285-pound championship in Class AAA. And Riverdale’s Sean Kennedy won his second straight title at 170 pounds with a pin of Soddy-Daisy’s John Williamson in 3:51.

Boykin, Garrison and Sean Kennedy each finished the season undefeated. Hammonds had one loss.

“They all came from the Sheriff’s Sharpshooters (wrestling program) and my dad (Bill Kennedy) was the coach,†said Sean Kennedy, who is the county’s first back-to-back state champion. “That means a lot to me personally. I think that’s a huge deal for Rutherford County, and great for Region 5.â€

Garrison was named the Class AAA state tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler after the tournament.

So you think the smaller schools may not offer as much opportunity?

From the smallest school division in Alabama, Womack shows you can complete with All wrestlers over several years and land a huge scholarship at a highly ranked ivy league school,,, must note, however, that Blackman's Tyler Sells handed him one of those 8 losses when he came up to Tennessee to compete at the Bradley Invitational...
