Maryville Football was a lot like UT Football is now. No playoff wins in nearly 10 years. I remember taking my nephew to the Championship games in 1996 and telling him Maryville will never win another championship. He still rides me about it 18 years later. I was never so glad to be wrong. Amazing what a great coaching staff can do. I also think those Maryville fans that don't want to come to games are crazy. Winning beats the heck out of losing.

 

John Olive took over in 1989. He is a great guy and not a bad coach. He had some assistant coaches that the players hated with a passion. Numbers went from 60-70 kids to around 30-40 kids. Players were quitting in droves. When Hammontree took over he fired those coaches. He hired David Ellis that 1st season. He hired Quarles 2 years later. When Quarles showed up is when Maryville really started winning. Quarles taking over and hiring Gaylor was icing on the cake. We Rebel fans are blessed to have these great coaches.

Rebelron did in fact say MHS would never win another state championship. Maybe he should go to the national championship game this year and say the same thing about the Vols on the way home!

I'm going to throw my two cents in about Kingsport D.B.  I understand that they have all these records with all these wins to their credit. That is all well and fine but since the TSSAA went to a playoff system back in 1969 D.B has not won anything period. Even a blind hog stumbles upon an acorn ever now and then especially a school that size .Bottom line is the the quality of football in that district is very weak and in my opinion couldn't compete in 4-A much less 6-A.  You have a great band and we enjoyed watching them and you have great fan support which is even better. I myself don't know the reason that district is so weak but it is. Most of those records D.B. has under it's belt are from the old days when there were a couple of big schools and them being one were the big bullies because most schools were small back in those days but since consolidation of many of those small schools over the years have taken place those big bullies are a thing of the past. Eventually Maryville will pass the record they have in total football wins but to be honest we could care less. Those Gold Footballs in the trophy case are the only thing we care about not a tally sheet that goes back to the early 1900's recording wins of teams that wore leather helmets and jerseys that looked like potato sacks.

Records are records and darn they look so good on paper . we will have two more gold balls when our sophs and fresh this coming up year get to be juniors and senoirs mr. barney pants..

So which two years are you going to win it? This season is 2014. So will they win it once when the Sophomores are Seniors and the Freshmen are Juniors in 2016? Or are they going to win it in 2016 and 2017 when the Freshmen are Seniors?

Gotta be dobyns Bennet. One of the best stadiums, lots of talent, and their would still rather be the coach at sevier co. I don't blame him, I wouldn't want to deal with the Kingsport fans either
