Donovan mentioned 24 teams in 5A this year were moved down from 6A.  I was a little surprised more former 6A teams like Hendersonville and Sevier County were left off the list.  Everything I've heard about those two teams coupled with the fact they both move down after having great success in 6A is a little surprising.  Still a good list though, and the ones that made it were all deserving.

Wow, no one from Sumner County ranked! As Coach Hat likes to say "we are going to try to be at least competitive". I guess having players like Napper, Vanzant, Carter, Towe, and Mason in the county doesn't matter. Just have to prove it on the field.

I agree,

Hendersonville is a top 5 team hands down.

They will be very strong, also adding joejuan williams too..

Oak Ridge is loaded. Tee Higgins is the best player in the state of Tennessee. Darel Middleton has made the adjustment to Oak Ridge and has bought in. People are sleeping on the Alcorn kid #66 probably the best defensive player.  Defensively they want miss a beat. From what I hear they will be bigger and faster than last last year. Offensively the talk is they will e much better running the ball, with Middleton and Higgins on the outside it will be tough. Oh yeah they may have the best kicker/punter in the state.

Hillsboro lost A LOT!

I get that, but ypu can't teach speed and they got more than any other 5a team. The other pieces of the pie can lack a little more than other programs, and they make it up with talent and speed. Most schools are not like Hillsboro, there you can walk the halls a grab 5-6 pick up 150 a night at tailback. Sorta how it will Take Butch 4-5 years to turn around UT to the glory years, and someone can turn around UF in 1-2....you can't coach speed. Edited by UpperCumberlandMan

    • Never said I thought it was a smart decision. I'm scratching my head at it too.
    • If he wanted to play QB he should have either went to Heritage or William Blount and had a real good chance there. In stead he'll be exactly what he was going to be at Maryville. They already know who their QB is going to be in 2025 and it ain't going to be him.
    • Easier said than done. The man who ran for 250+ yards and 3TDs is gonna be back….and a lot bigger.
    • plus it removes the pressure around winning.
    • You are correct.   The teacher's pay scale is virtually the same in Knox County, now, as it is at Oak Ridge.   The coaching supplements are still higher at Oak Ridge, from what I was told, but not a huge difference.   Plus, Rusty is going from a position coach to an OC position, which is what he was at South Doyle and where his comfort zone is.  And from a special education teaching slot to a PE teaching slot.  There is a lot of positivity in that move without even considering the coaching aspect.   Anybody who sees something negative here is just looking for negativity to begin with.  But some live in that world.   Really good hire for Brent.  He now has two experienced and quality coordinators and can concentrate on being a head football coach.
