I agree with you about having the best coaching staff not just in ET but in the entire state and one of the top ones in the whole South. I don't agree that they have the best players year in and year out. (Not trying to take anything away from the players either). They are an Ultimate TEAM! They know every single play exactly were to go and have trust in their teammates to be were they are suppose to be. They are the smartest football team on the field every time they play.

I'm not saying Maryville has elite talent, just much better than other ET teams as a general rule. Quarles is unquestionably an elite coach, but there is not a coach alive who could win more than 95% of their games without a major talent advantage.

I have known quite a few of maryville's players over the years and I wouldn't say they have a major talent advantage by any stretch of the imagination.

Maryville is disciplined better than any team by far. Take the State championship game for example. When they got that far behind 99% of the other teams would have thrown in the towel but Maryville played it cool and came right back to snatch victory out of the jaws of defeat. Discipline is the secret of Maryville's success. Discipline is when you get the ball with less than thirty seconds to go in the half and score a touchdown while the other team is thinking halftime is just about here .Discipline  is when your playing a team with a half dozen D-1 players and you totally take them out of their game plan to where frustration sets in and they fall apart like Oakland did last year and Blackman did the year before.

Fulton and Alcoa will really good. I think Hardin Valley,Science Hill and Dobyns Bennett will be tough also. You cant overlook Heritage,Jefferson County,William Blount and Bradley Central could surprise.

Dont forget bearden. Those Bulldogs should be improved and should surprise a couple of teams.

Like Governors91 already said the players at Maryville dont have a major talent advantage but they do have a different CULTURE than most schools in ET. Everyone time they walk on the field they play like they know they are going to win. They are a COMPLETE TEAM! They dont make mistakes because they have been properly coached since they were 5 years old and already know the expectations to be a Rebel. Ive coached against them and have seen them play mutiple times.

Do you guys think Maryville could've rung off the state titles like they have the past 15 years in the old 3 class format? I think they probably would've still been right there. Not sure if they would've won as many though. Thoughts?

Well, they had four trips to the state game and won three back in the seventies when we had the three classes

    • I have no affiliation with Maryville anymore outside of being a 2nd generation graduate from a large family of Rebel alumni. That relationship ended courtesy of the lame duck AD (a Bearden grad I might add) and the HBIC. That said, I could care less if a private school comes through and offers every promising athlete out of that school or any other school better opportunities.
    • A perfect example is for athletes at Clinton High School. I will completely understand, and hopefully everyone should understand why they want to, and as of right now, it looks like that’s going to happen in numbers over the summer.
    • I mean, that’s easy to say when it hasn’t happened to your school that often, if at all, but yeah, I think everybody should be for the student athlete or player. Whatever they think will help them or their athletic career, I feel like they should be able to do that, even if that means transferring schools. Now I don’t really get that when you have almost every offer you could want and then jump ship, but what can I say? I guess money talks.
    • I for one am all for it.
    • Covid killed the city because they chose not to play football in the 2020 season. Therefore, kids weren't able to practice and develop, and continuing to lift weights. Memphis basically had 7/8 graders, skipping a year, then playing 9/10 high school football. Now, there's only one team that has made a "dent" which will be Southwind (made it to the 5A semifinals last year).  If you want to go more suburbs, then it'll be Houston, which won the 6A state title, defeating Oakland Other than that, I agree.
