When Will Schools Realize Its A Program That Breeds Sucess, Not Talent

Definitely agree with the OP on this one.  All you have to do is look at Riverdale to see the difference between a program and just yearly football teams.

Programs breed expectations. Expectations bring great effort, participation, commitment and support.  It's a synergy that just feeds itself and gets stronger.  Throw in some talent and you have a state championship favorite.  Even in the down years you're in the hunt because of the program.

You know you and I see eye to eye nearly all the time. I think the real question is what makes for great program building. i certainly believe, coaching, talent, facilities, and support from the admin down have to be there. One thing that i think is essential great parent/booster involvement. Parents need to be a part of the solution, not the problem. I think that when parents show support and really talk positive around their player it also breeds momentum. The parent that talks the program down, talks the coaching, the " you should be a star and it is everyone else's fault that you are not are the poison that keeps programs from truly achieving there full potential. Parents need to revert to the mentality we all grew up with or around.and back to the point you made. The expectation breeds success. If you are not the top dog, I expect you to put in the work to get there. Every player holding their own  personal accountability to be there best.regardless of what anyone or everyone else is doing.

Agree wholeheartedly and I think it works well in a tight community with s straight middle school feeder and no tuition assisted private schools nearby.

I'll take a leftover Corey Rathbone Anyday...Keep sending your third string west... The Alcoa kid at Cak isn't bad either this year! Why do you think Alcoa and Maryville are so good and Willy B and Heritage are not? Same county

Do you think Corey left Maryville because he was third string?

The only problem with your statement is in todays world the parents only care while their kid is in school. After they graduated the program is not on their minds anymore. That's where is has to become a school, community program that builds from the middle school program on up. A lot of the parents you see talking down programs where a part of that same program when it was successful and they have a hard time standing by and walking it crumble. IE, the Riverdale's of the world and other programs around the state. It takes years to build a program and a single win doesn't  make one. We'll see that next year when surely Maryville will be right back on top. All you have to do is look at the top Alabama schools to see what a program can do and despite the doubters they are mainly public schools. A great program breeds success year after year and creates the desire for community, parental and student development to reach the same goal year after year....

As we look back of the past year broadcasting games all over this state and in Alabama there once again is a common theme. The schools that have built a program from middle school on up with a consistent theme and step by step program always seem to come out on top. Yes, there are teams that occasionally have a few talented players that take them to the next level for a year or two only to fall back into the pack in the next few years. These are the team that usually face the program teams in the finals each year only to loose. We see these teams with that special talented player riding their backs into a good season every year. So, what does it take to be on top year after year? Its the development of the program from middle school on up. Weight training, conditioning, utilizing the same football scheme through out the entire program. We see these team reload every year and if you take a hard look these teams all do one thing and that's playing consistent fundamentally sound football and don't make a lot of mistakes. You only have to look at the number of players these schools put into division 1. It's always on a lower percentage than many of the other schools in the state. Why is that? It's because these teams were taught to play correctly and develop correctly. They all have the same common theme and a coach that lives and breaths the program. So, does throwing money at the program work? No, we see this all the time with that one financially secure parent willing the throw their money into the school in order to have their kid get a leg up on everyone else but after them move on so does their money. a school, its principal, the school board and every coach has to be on board to make the program work. Paul Brown, the late coach and owner of the Browns and the Bengals when he was a high school coach in Lima Ohio made it a practice to deliver a football to every new born baby boy born in the town. Why did he do this? To set the tone for the program. Every young man in that town grew up wanting to play at Lima and for Coach Brown. You see , its all about the program that makes the success. What is your school doing..

this is the approach Cleveland is taking with Coach Cummings leading the pack. The youth league teams all the way up to the high school team are all running the same offense. Of course the younger the kids the more simplified the offense is. Another thing is all the teams use the mascot Raiders and all have a power C on the helments. So hopefully that breeds die hard Blue Raiders, who want to attend Cleveland High. The youth league teams had a great 1st season with 4 championships. But programs aren't built in one year so we'll see what the future holds.
