What's considered too young for contact football?

Are 4 and 5 year olds too young for contact football? Our county allows them at this age but curious about other counties, especially those with long traditions. I don't have a problem with it myself. I know Knox Co makes you play flag football first at age 6 then contact starting at 7. Thoughts?

Our league which consist of WC, Cwood, Lawrence Co, Mount Pleasant and Giles Co starts at four years old. I think they more likely to get hurt when they get older than when they're young.

Good point pujo.LC lost a young man in high school a few years back playing flag and was hit in the head and passed away.

I hated it when my oldest played flag,he was one of the go getters and was on a collision coarse every play. I'm glad we done away with flag. You teach kids to reach and then you have to reteach it. Break down ,get you're head across and make a tackle.

I personally don't think there is a right or wrong age to start tackle football. You risk injury in both. Its the parents of the children that need to make that decision. The big thing in both flag and tackle is teaching proper fundamentals. Coaches in the youth ages need to remember it's not a win at all cost thing. Its about teaching the game of football correctly.

This is our mentality.Take advantage of their youth and ability to learn and teach! The winning will come after learning HOW!

    • I have no issues with the Karns Middle School program.   Good coaches and he's with the kids he goes to school with.  He's a rising 6th grader who had to play with 6th grade kids last year because Karns didn't have enough kids for a 5th grade age team.  He's in a good place at this point.   My daughter is a single mom with 4 kids under 11 years old.  We help her out with logistics, so staying in our own area right now is important.  Once he gets to high school age, who knows what happens?  That bridge will be crossed when we get there.
    • I know he was a backup but I thought he filled in well when the starter went down. Never a bad thing to have a change of pace back
    • That would be a good get for them. Lowe always finds a way. Pretty sure they have their Rb from last year returning but not that line of beef
    • One school has said it, it was York…who Oneida and many school that played them before we did claimed that they were the dirtiest bunch they’ve played. Riverside didn’t call us dirty nor did smith after they beat us. Ur only dirty if your the one giving out the whoopins.
    • If it was anyone but #8 I would agree with you. Theirs a couple people on that team that probably would. Not him. And I who was standing on the 1st base line fence saw clearly that the boys foot was covering more than half the bag.
