South Pittsburg vs Cornersville (Grider against this Randolph man)

Some excerpts from that Hargis mans paper - in case you missed it.

South Pittsburg coach Vic Grider, a playoff veteran, has been trying to get his team healthy since midseason but feels he has a team that can play with anybody if the Pirates are healthy. He said the problem was getting them there.

"You can't show up with a half-loaded gun," he added. "I'm curious to see what we look like if we get all of our best people out there."

The Region 3-1A champs will be heavy favorites to secure their 10th win of 2016 when they host Cornersville, the fourth-place team from Region 4-1A.

We got beat by a 10-0 football team. It isn't like we got beat by some chumps," Grider said. "Did we leave some chances out there? Yes, but I'm sure they feel the same way. They showed us, though, how hard and physical you have to play if you want to be successful. If that game hadn't turned out like it did, I'm not sure we would've beat Marion (County) two weeks later. It may have been a great learning experience for us."

South Pittsburg is the most successful area team this decade with 20 playoff games and 15 playoff victories. There is no pressure, though, for these Pirates to try to live up to the accomplishments of those who've gone before.

"It may sound crazy, but they've been through the roughest two- or three-year stretch we've had," Grider added. "We've beat some teams but we couldn't beat the good teams at times, and these guys are trying to get (the program) back where it was — re-establish what was."

Playoff football in South Pittsburg...you got to love it. You can sense the excitement in the air. You will notice the golden championship trees lining the road coming into town. You will see the fans come out to support, the music blaring, a cannon going off that will shake the ground, and the fireworks lighting up the sky. What's not to like? Go Pirates!

What are golden Championship trees? I've never noticed those in my hometown.

Thanks Big. Im looking forward to the next few years but wanna take it slow. At my age you gotta slow down and enjoy them all.

Boys I know y'all are heading up and walking into one of the premier teams in the state backyard but play with honor and represent your team with character and determination. Fight to the end and leave no doubts. You are not expected to win but are expected to give your all. You do that and you'll be winners to me. Go dogs!!! Safe travels and I'll have your back as always.

    • Never said I thought it was a smart decision. I'm scratching my head at it too.
    • If he wanted to play QB he should have either went to Heritage or William Blount and had a real good chance there. In stead he'll be exactly what he was going to be at Maryville. They already know who their QB is going to be in 2025 and it ain't going to be him.
    • Easier said than done. The man who ran for 250+ yards and 3TDs is gonna be back….and a lot bigger.
    • plus it removes the pressure around winning.
    • You are correct.   The teacher's pay scale is virtually the same in Knox County, now, as it is at Oak Ridge.   The coaching supplements are still higher at Oak Ridge, from what I was told, but not a huge difference.   Plus, Rusty is going from a position coach to an OC position, which is what he was at South Doyle and where his comfort zone is.  And from a special education teaching slot to a PE teaching slot.  There is a lot of positivity in that move without even considering the coaching aspect.   Anybody who sees something negative here is just looking for negativity to begin with.  But some live in that world.   Really good hire for Brent.  He now has two experienced and quality coordinators and can concentrate on being a head football coach.
